company says these pricing actions are needed not only to counter the continuing unprecedented rises in raw material, energy and transportation costs but also to support on-going investments required to meet rapidly expanding demand for these bromine-based flame-retardant additives in the building and construction industry. Strong demand in these segments is driven by both expanding end use and fire safety regulatory requirements, Great Lakes says. The company has also increased the off-list prices for Firemaster 2100 (decabromodiphenylethane) by $0.20/kg worldwide. Elsewhere, Supresta – the former Akzo Nobel phosphorus chemicals business renamed after its acquisition by Ripplewood holdings [see ADPO, June 2004] – has raised list and off-list prices worldwide on a series of its phosphorus-based product lines in response to the growing costs of production and distribution. Products affected include flame retardants for polyurethane foam and engineering resin applications, and plasticiz- ers. Prices for Fyrol PCF, Fyrol FR2, Fyrol 38 and Fyrol FRW have increased by US$0.05/lb ($0.10/kg), as have those for phosphorus trichlo- ride and phosphorus oxytrichloride. Prices for Phosflex plasticizers and Fyrolflex have been raised by $0.15/lb ($0.35/kg) and for Phosflex 4 (tributyl phosphate) by $0.08/lb ($0.15/kg). The company says that the escalating costs associated with phosphorus- and petroleum-based raw materials, packaging, energy and product distri- bution have forced it to raise prices. Supresta has headquarters in Ardsley, New York, and regional offices in Amersfoort, The Netherlands, and Shanghai. All the above-listed price changes are effective from 1 July 2005, or as existing contracts and sales agreements allow. Effective 1 July 2005, DuPont increased the price of all TiO 2 grades by US$150 per tonne in Asia Pacific, excluding Japan. This increase is sup- ported by the continued tight supply-demand sit- uation for TiO 2 around the globe. The company says that other regional increases will be announced directly within the local regions. From the same date, the price of phenolic antiox- idant Wingstay L from French firm Eliokem was increased by 12%. The company says this increase has become necessary to offset the con- tinuous and unprecedented increase on raw mate- rials and energy costs, and will also help restore the margin levels required to maintain the quality and consistency of the products for the long term and cover the ever-increasing regulatory and compliance costs faced by the chemical industry. Eliokem also reports that its new Wingstay L plant in Ningbo (China), which is the largest sin- gle production facility of its type, has now been up and running for six months [ADPO, February 2005] with a quality level matching the most stringent industry requirements. In Europe, Cabot has increased the price of all its masterbatch grades (Plasblak, Plaswite, Plasgrey, Plasadd and Rainbow) by 70 per tonne from 1 June 2005. The price of Cabelec conductive com- pounds has also been raised by 40/tonne. This is to offset the further surge in crude oil prices since the beginning of the year and the consequent raw material and energy cost increases.
