Today’s COVID Brief Maryland is reporting a record 64,286 new vaccinations and a total of 2,422,963 vaccinations to date. According to CDC data, 34.7% of Marylanders 18 and older have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine—19th in the nation. Prince George’s County Metrics Currently vaccinating Phase 2A. Description of groups eligible for vaccination now.

Prince George’s County has entered Phase 2A for vaccine distribution. Pre-registered individuals who live or work in the County and are eligible in Phase 2A will begin to receive appointments at County Health Department’s vaccination clinics. Vaccination Progress The state continues to make great strides in vaccinations, with a record 66,000 people receiving shots on March 25. Maryland is reporting that 34.7% of the population has now received one shot, but as you can see from the chart below, vaccination numbers greatly vary greatly around the state.

More than 166,000 Prince George’s County residents have received a first dose and approximately 75,000 are now fully vaccinated. With a population of over 900, 000 people, the county still has a long way to go to get residents vaccinated and protected. The focus on vaccine equity, the expanding numbers of vaccination sites, and the increasing supply of vaccines, should help to improve access to vaccinations. Now it is up to all of us to make sure that all Prince Georgians get vaccinated. If you are eligible now and have not been vaccinated yet, we encourage you to make your appointment. If you have friends, neighbors or family members who need help with scheduling appointments or with getting to appointments, we hope you will lend a hand if you can. The City has created a Vaccine Navigator program to help as well. We’ve recruited volunteers to reach out to seniors to see how they’re doing with getting vaccinated. We started by contacting senior center patrons age 85+ and now have moved to the 75+ population. So far, in these age groups, we’re finding that about half have already been vaccinated or have appointments. We will continue to expand efforts to other groups as vaccine appointments and resources allow.

Governor’s Vaccination Update on March 23 Governor Hogan provided an update on vaccine distribution at a press conference on March 23.

Eligibility

• Phase 2A is underway. Those who are age 60+ are now eligible to be vaccinated. • On March 30, Phase 2B begins. Those age 16+ and up with underlying health conditions that make

them more susceptible to COVID-19 will become eligible for vaccination. • Disabled Marylanders (age 16 and up) will also be eligible in Phase 2B.

Vaccine Equity

• Progress is being made on bringing vaccines to hard-to-reach populations with popup and community clinics established in vulnerable areas. Vaccine numbers in the hardest hit zip codes are improving.

More Vaccination Locations

• Six new mass vaccination sites will be added in April: o Timonium and Montgomery County – week of April 5 o Anne Arundel and Frederick counties – week of April 12 o Harford and Howard counties - by the end of April.

• More pharmacies and community partners are being added to the growing list of sites administering vaccines.

View March 24 press release from the Governor’s office. Maryland Expands Vaccine Eligibility In anticipation of a substantial increase in vaccine shipments beginning next week, Maryland has laid out a timetable for expanded vaccine eligibility. Effective immediately, any Marylander in Phase 1 or 2A or 2B can pre-register at one of the state’s mass vax sites by visiting the pre-registration website or calling 1-855-MD-GOVAX. The graphic below outlines the remainder of the vaccine phases.

Vaccine Appointment Scheduling Not only are the numbers of vaccine shipments increasing, but so too are the number of locations in Maryland offering vaccine appointments. There are now more than 300 vaccine locations in the state. There are four major options for scheduling vaccine appointments:

1. Mass vaccination sites include Six Flags, M & T Bank, & Regency Stadium in Waldorf. More sites are coming in April Preregister at https://onestop.md.gov/preregistration or by calling the state’s COVID-19 vaccination support center at 1-855-MD-GOVAX (1-855-634-6829). Six Flags is administering approximately 4,000 shots per day. Up to 2,100 appointments per week are set aside for Prince George’s County residents who have pre-registered through the County pre-registration list.

2. Prince George’s Health Department clinics (see list below) Preregister or call 3-1-1 for assistance with pre-registration.

3. Pharmacies – Giant, Safeway, CVS, Rite Aid, Walgreens and Walmart and now independently owned pharmacies under the EPIC pharmacies umbrella.

4. Healthcare systems – Luminis (Anne Arundel Hospital/Doctor’s Hospital), University of Maryland, (includes Prince George’s Hospital ), MedStar, Holy Cross Hospital, Johns Hopkins and Adventist. Appointments may be at hospitals or community clinics that the healthcare system are supporting, such as the Luminis-run clinic at Reid Temple in Glenn Dale.

Links to schedule appointments at pharmacies and health care systems can be found at covidvax.maryland.gov or you can visit each organization’s website to see what is currently available. Some of the healthcare systems also have their own pre-registration processes. You may also wish to join the Vaccine Hunters Group on Facebook. Group members share information in real time about when appointments open up at various pharmacies, hospitals or other vaccination sites. They also provide tips such which days or what time of day a particular pharmacy chain updates their information.

CDC Updates Guidance for K-12 Schools The CDC released updated guidance for social distancing in K-12 schools. According to the revised guidance:

• In elementary schools, students should be at least 3 feet apart. • In middle schools and high schools, students should be at least 3 feet apart in areas of low, moderate,

or substantial community transmission. • In areas of high community transmission, middle and high school students should be 6 feet apart.

Six feet of distance should be maintained: • Between adults, and between adults and students. • When masks cannot be worn, such as when eating. • During activities when increased exhalation occurs, including singing, shouting, playing instruments,

sports and exercise. These activities should be conducted outdoors or in large, well-ventilated space, to minimize risk of transmission.

• In common areas such as school lobbies, gyms and auditoriums. The State of Maryland is adopting these CDC guidelines recommending that, with universal masking in place, students should maintain a distance of at least three feet in classroom settings. State Superintendent of Schools Dr. Karen Salmon and Deputy Public Health Secretary Dr. Jinlene Chan issued a letter notifying school systems of the update to the state’s guidance. Stakeholders Meeting Zoom link: http://bowie.fyi/stakeholdersmtg4-6 Warning: Phishing Campaign Pretends to Send Stimulus Payments The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is warning people of an e-mail scam about COVID-19 stimulus payments. The current version of the phishing email scam uses emails appearing to be from acting FTC Chairwoman Rebecca Slaughter. Alvaro Puig, a Consumer Education Specialist with the FTC, says that there are 3 things that people need to know about this scam:

• The FTC does not send people coronavirus relief money. The Treasury Department and the IRS handle this issue. You can learn more at irs.gov/coronavirus.

• The FTC will not email, call, text, or message you on social media to ask for your personal information. They will not ask for your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number; date of birth; address; or phone number.

• Do not reply to any unexpected email that asks for your personal information. Scammers can use that information to exploit users.
