Activities at Rosliston Forestry Centre:

Sat 4th May

Dawn Chorus Walk Meet 5.00am at Rosliston Forestry Centre Foyer. Join us for a leisurely walk with bird expert Dave Scattergood to discover the wonders of the dawn chorus. Booking essential £10.00 per person includes hot snack and drink. Suitable for children over 12 and adults.

Tues 16th April

Egg Box Scavenger Hunt Egg box scavenger hunt. (Bring your own egg box if possible) Is it an Easter egg box? No, it’s a treasure chest! Decorate your “treasure chest” in the classroom and then walk around the site to fill your chest with natural treasure.

£2.50 per child

Sat 4th May

Science Discovery Fun Day 10.30am to 4.00pm Join us for fun with science - have a go at simple experiments with the Environmental Education team, Rolls-Royce plc and the Astronomy Group. Event free (may be small charge for some activities).

Suitable for all ages

Tues 23rd April

Slugs and snails Do you know your nursery rhymes? Find slugs and snails, but not puppy dog’s tails! Find out where slugs and snails may be found, what conditions they need to survive and what they eat. Can you find things that make you think of sugar and spice and all things nice? Explore the site and record finds and then return to the classroom (by 3.30pm for help with identification)

£2.50 per group/ set of resources borrowed

Tues 28th May

Nature Detectives Walk. Part of the National Forest Walking Festival Gather in the classroom from 2pm to start

promptly at 2.15pm.

Join us for a guided walk and be a Rosliston nature detective! We will be looking for clues to tell us what lives on the site and what it needs to survive and discovering many other interesting facts. Session will finish between 3.30pm and 4pm.

£2.50 per child (must be accompanied by adult)

Children must be supervised by an adult – please be ready to help them with the activities. See programme for the different types of session, prices and location. Activities suitable for ages 4 – 12 years unless stated.

Some, like pond dipping and minibeast hunting are with the

Environmental Education Project

team and some are self led.

Take part in our ‘family explorer’ activities

to investigate the site. Tues 19th February

Signs of Spring Drop in to the classroom anytime between 2pm and 3.00pm Make an origami pot and sow wild flower seeds to grow on at home to encourage bees in to your garden. Then explore the site to find some signs of spring! Return to the classroom by 3.30 for help with identification

Thursday 21st February

Bushcraft & Survival

Come and enjoy this family session, we will be building shelters, making fires, and frames, as well as learning about and

enjoying the natural environment.

Pond Dipping Start any time between 2pm & 3.30pm. Join us by the pond/lake (follow signs). Find out what creatures live there! We provide all the equipment, but please be prepared to share within family groups. Session ends 4pm. £2.50 per child.

Tues 27th August Grabbit for your Rabbit Signs of Summer Have fun and explore outdoors. Learn about the types of plants in the meadow and begin to understand about meadow management and biodiversity. Rake and collect hay for your furry friends. Identify meadow plants with books and ID sheets. Explore the site to find some signs of Summer! Return to the classroom by 3.30 for help with identification

Autumn Family Activities

Bring your own jam jar to turn into an autumnal lantern. Help birds by making feeders from cones £2.50 per child

Tues 6th August

Tree Safari Make your own tree dial then follow the Tree Trail to discover fascinating facts and stories about TREEEEEEEEEEES! Identify who and what lives around trees

Tues 30th July

Pond Dipping Start any time between 2pm & 3.30pm. Join us by the pond/lake (follow signs). Find out what creatures live there! We provide all the equipment, but please be prepared to share within family groups. Session ends 4pm.

Willow activities and site maintenance Led activity learning about one of the maintenance tasks we need to do on site. (Follow the signs to the willow fence) Use the willow collected to weave and make stars/ Dream catchers/ butterflies….. £2.50 per child

Tues 17th September

Bat Walk Meet 6.30pm at Rosliston Forestry Centre classroom. An opportunity to find out about bats – where they live, what they eat and how they find their way in the dark. Led by Derbyshire Bat Group. (Walk ends about 8.15pm). No need to book. £2.50 per person

Suitable for children over 10 and adults. Tues 13th August

Minibeast Safari Gather in the classroom from 2pm to start promptly at 2.15pm. Join us for a guided walk to discover some of the smallest creatures at Rosliston! We will be looking for minibeasts in different places around the site. Session will finish between 3.30pm and 4pm.
