Commutative PropertyCommutative property says that order does not make

any difference when only adding/multiplying.a + b = b + a a • b = b • a

Examples4 + 5 = 5 + 42 • 3 = 3 • 2

Commutative property does not work for subtraction or division!

Page 5: OTCQ 1-6 Evaluate the expression: 5+ 3(2 3 + 5(-1)) =

Associative PropertyAssociative property says that grouping does not make any difference when only adding/multiplying .

(a + b) + c = a + (b + c) (ab) c = a (bc)

Examples(1 + 2) + 3 = 1 + (2 + 3)(2 • 3) • 4 = 2 • (3 • 4)

The associative property does not work for subtraction or division.
