CAF is a major Spanish tram manufacturer, with a very strong reputation for achieving their projects successfully. CAF started to build tramways in 2000, Faiveley is their preferred supplier for hydraulic brake systems.

While designing its first 70% low floor tram, CAF wanted a partner to guide their design: to have good integration of the braking units (discs and calipers) within their bogies. Several technical issues had to be solved. The situation repeated few years later when CAF wanted to introduce its first 100% low floor tram.

Faiveley’s Madrid office dedicated a strong and skilled design team to support CAF. Although the first project in 2000 was relatively small (7 trams for the city of Bilbao), Faiveley was fully committed to its customer.

CAF is now recognized to be a very professional company, successfully delivering its URBOS tram family to many cities (Zaragossa, Malaga, Belgrad, Sevilla, etc.) and all its trams are fitted with Faiveley brake systems.

TRAMWAY for the city of LINZ, developed in 2000 and delivered from 2001 till 2004.While all tramways until the end of the 90’s were equipped with rigid bogies, a new generation of bogies with a primary suspension was called for. No capable braking system existed on the market. Faiveley’s team invented a new generation of brake actuator, articulated to the upper side of the bogie, thus capable of following the movements of the discs and the bogie while braking, Thanks to Faiveley’s pro-active design work, the Faiveley braking caliper could be installed without making any specific modification to the bogie, bringing greater comfort and reducing wheel wear and bogie stress.

Following this success, this bogie was selected to become the standard bogie for the very successful Flexity tram family - now operating in several cities (Linz, Marseille, Palermo, Valencia, Alicante…). Today suspended bogies are the industry standard.
