Harcourt Assessment publishes a wide variety of tests for all kinds ofusers—tests that may be administered by paraprofessionals, tests thatmay be administered by educational specialists with differing back-grounds in assessments, and tests that require an advanced level oftraining to administer and interpret the test results.

Some tests, such as intelligence tests, are restricted to individuals withspecific training. Others, such as some checklists of adaptive behav-iors, provide examiners with useful information and do not require agreat deal of interpretation.

We differentiate assessment products in our catalog by classifying themas A-, B-, or C-level instruments.Generally, A-level instruments are those that do not require an individ-ual to have advanced training in assessment and interpretation. Thesetypes of tests include products such as School Function Assessment(SFA), Infanib, and Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile. There are no spe-cial qualifications to order these products.

B-level instruments require more expertise on the part of the examinerthan A-level tests. The administration procedures and interpretation oftest results are generally more complex than A-level products. Examplesof B-level instruments include products such as Bayley InfantNeurodevelopmental Screener, Miller Assessment for Preschoolers, andBrown Attention–Deficit Disorder Scales for Children.

B-level tests may be purchased by individuals who are certified by aprofessional organization recognized by Harcourt Assessment torequire training and experience in a relevant area of assessment.

These professional organizations include as part of their code of ethics the requirement that practitioners engage in aspects of theirprofessions that are within the scope of their competence. Therefore,practitioners who do not have a master’s degree but who have com-pleted specialized training or have developed expertise in a specificarea (e.g. neurodevelopmental treatment or infant development) mayorder B-level products to assess skills in the practitioner’s area ofexpertise.

If you are a member of a professional organization such as theAmerican Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) or theAmerican Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), you are eligible topurchase B-level products.

B-level tests may also be purchased by individuals with a master’sdegree in psychology, education, or a related field with relevant train-ing in assessment.
