Hilda Tottle Memorial Education Award

Community Partner Award

This award recognizes those special local corporations or organizations which have fostered and promoted the work of Osteoporosis Canada through one of its Chapters or the National Office.

The recipient of the Community Partner Award was Cornelia Bean Ltd., a supplier of fine teas and coffee located at 417 Academy Road. Bob has been actively supporting the Manitoba Chapter of Osteoporosis Canada for over 11 years. Cheryl Baldwin, chair of the Manitoba Chapter presented the award to Bob Krul, co - owner of Cornelia Bean.

The Kruls have provided tea and coffee for the Manitoba Chapter’s Annual Cheese and Wine event, gift baskets for the silent auction and gift bags of specialty blended teas for event attendees. For our “Tea With a Twist” fundraising event, Bob selected the wide variety of teas and unique cocktail mixes and worked alongside celebrity bartenders to blend and serve the “tea tinis” to our guests.

He said he has noticed that more men are attending the Chapter’s events and is pleased to see osteoporosis awareness increasing among men.

Spring Public Forum: “Give Your Bones a Workout”

Physiotherapist Emily Hunter will help guests at the Manitoba Chapter’s Spring Forum learn how exercise keeps their bones strong and healthy. The forum’s title, Give Your Bones a Workout, indicates the type of information that will be shared on Tues., April 25 at the Henderson Highway Legion Branch No. 215, 3600 De Vries Ave., East St. Paul. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the presentation starts at 7 p.m.

Emily will be presenting with fellow physiotherapists Lori De Pauw and Rebecca Atkinson. The evening will begin with an overview of what osteoporosis is and the important role that exercise plays in managing bone health and preventing fractures.

The case histories of three people will be presented: one in the early stages of osteoporosis; another who is at a moderate risk, and a third person experiencing more severe effects of osteoporosis. Guests will circulate between three stations at which they will have their height measured, and try various balance and posture exercises. While the link between exercise and bone health isn’t a new discovery, Emily, who owns Hunter Physiotherapy, said the type of recommended exercise has changed. Admission to the forum is free, but people are asked to register in advance by calling 204-772-3498 or email to [email protected].

This year’s deserving recipient of the prestigious Hilda Tottle Memorial Award was Donna Cronmiller. Donna was recognized for her many years of volunteer service with the Manitoba Chapter of Osteoporosis Canada. She joined the volunteer team in 2009 and has served in a variety of roles over the years. Donna was one of the founding members of “Osteo Connections”, a support group for those living with osteoporosis. She serves as a facilitator for the group’s monthly meetings. As well as providing information on how to live well with osteoporosis, Donna willingly shares her personal journey of living with this disease. Donna also facilitates the Newly Diagnosed group that meets monthly at the Chapter office. In addition, Donna is always ready to help out at displays, public forums and whenever an extra pair of hands is needed at the office. Her volunteer work with the Chapter included helping to plan the 2011 Osteoporosis Canada’s Annual General Meeting which was held in Winnipeg. She was also a member of the Tea with a Twist Committee from Sept 2008 until fall 2012.

Volunteers Are Backbone of Manitoba Chapter

Osteoporosis Canada, Manitoba Chapter receives outstanding support from its volunteers. They continually empower, educate and support Canadians affected by osteoporosis through various education events, public forums, health fairs and other roles that support the organization. As part of the ongoing effort to keep Manitobans informed about the latest development in osteoporosis, the Chapter’s Volunteer Development Committee chair Vivienne Nickerson indicates three ways how volunteers can contribute in this process: participating in committee activities to educate Manitobans how to manage osteoporosis, share personal stories about the importance of building and maintaining healthy bones and serving your community so others can emulate. Recent retirees may have more spare time during the day. They may be interested in assisting in a service delivery role in which they work directly with people diagnosed with osteoporosis. “Volunteering is a three-way win,” Vivienne said. It allows the organization to enlarge its capacity, achieve its mission, and help make a meaningful contribution. “Volunteers use their skills, and can also develop new skills,” she said, adding that the Volunteer Committee will work to match volunteers with jobs that will bring them personal satisfaction and encourage a sense of belonging.
