After years of fobbing them off as old wives' tales, scientists have discovered that some of thetraditional old fashioned cold remedies actually dowork. Hot fruit drinks and chicken soup are just twoof Granny's old-fashioned remedies that have beenproven effective in the fight against colds and flu.

Hot Fruit DrinksExperts at Cardiff University's Common ColdCentre have proved that a steaming mug of hotfruit cordial helps to reduce symptoms of a cold.Sipping the hot fruity drink increases air flowthrough the nose, making it easier to breathe, andraises body temperature, making you feelimmediately better. Lemon or citrus flavours arebest and the drink should be drunk piping hot orat room temperature.

Chicken SoupChicken soup contains a number of ingredientsthat help to ease infections of the upper respiratorytract; in other words a blocked up nose and a sorethroat. A good hot chicken soup made withchicken, onions, sweet potato, parsnips, turnipsand salt and pepper, calms inflamed throats, breaks up mucus and creates airway secretions, making it easier to breathe.

GarlicAlthough her advice to crush it in a glass of milkmay have been a little extreme, Grandma was right

again with her tip that garlic was good for fightingcolds. Research has shown that garlic is anantioxidant and can shorten the life of a cold. Also,Allicin, an ingredient found in garlic, is adecongestant that will help clear your blockednose and sinuses.

A Hot ToddyThis one might have come from Grandpa ratherthan Grandma, but whoever advised you to slip acouple of drops of whiskey into your hot honeyand lemon drink was talking sense. Smallamounts of alcohol (we're talking whiskey orbrandy here not Smirnoff Ice or cider) can have ananti-inflammatory effect on mucous membranesand can help reduce a fever. A dash of alcohol in ahot drink before bed can also aid restful sleep.

Community Governance Review in Horbury Outcome of Statutory Consultation Exercise

As you may be aware Wakefield Council received a petition from 10% of Horbury residents proposing the creation of a parish council.

This then placed Wakefield Council under a duty to determine if this view was shared by the wider community. To provide residents and interested parties with the opportunity to have their say, a consultation exercise was undertaken during April and May 2009. The consultation included a range of awareness raising initiatives and public meetings, these included:

• Information leaflet included in the ‘Ossett and Horbury Review’

• Advertisements in local media

• Posters and leaflets available at local community venues

• Posters and leaflets sent to 409 businesses in the area asking them to display posters and raise awareness

• Three public meetings held at Horbury Community Centre, including weekend and evening meetings

• A front page link on the Council’s website with the option of completing an e-form or leaflet

Following this consultation period all the responses were considered and a report detailing the findings was presented at a full Council meeting of Wakefield Council on 29th July 2009.The Council decided that in light of the responses received not to establish a parish council in Horbury for the following reasons:

• The majority of responses received did not favour the creation of a parish and parish council

• Overall the information regarding the nature of the area and the views of those responding to the consultation did not support a view that the creation of a parish and parish council would benefit the area

• It was considered that the creation of a parish and parish council that is not supported by the majority of people responding would not improve the sense of community spirit and community cohesion in the area. It would not reflect the interests of the community in the area, and improve local democracy

• the area already has a non-statutory Community Council and other appropriate bodies

A copy of the report considered by Wakefield Council on 29th July together with all the responses received during the consultation period can be viewed at Horbury library and at our website www.wakefield.gov.uk/horburyreview

Garden Magic have kindly offered advice on thejobs to be done in the garden starting September.

1. Plan your borders/window boxes for Spring – dig

over or re-fill your window boxes in readiness for

planting your bulbs from mid-Sept onwards into

mid-Oct frost free, fill with Narcissus 'Baby Moon',

Narcissus 'Chanterelle' Daffodils.

2. Divide your Perennials now - Any large clumps

of summer-flowering perennials, such as lilies, can

be divided to make new plants.

3. Patio Herbs – get rid of old bedding plants in

your patio tubs/pots and add a lovely array of herbs

to brighten up

your outside

space and use

in cooking like

Thyme, Mint or

Basil.

4. Lawn Care

– now’s the time to inspect your lawn for damage

from damaging Summer elements and prepare your

lawn for pre Autumn/Winter protection. All dead

grass/thatch should be raked away and a feed

should be applied early September and then a

specific herbicide in October. If in any doubt seek

the help and advice of a professional lawn care

business for an assessment.

Starting a new school can be both exciting and very dauntingfor children of all ages but, as a parent, there are many thingsyou can do to make the transition a little easer.• Talking to your child about the changes they are facing, will

help them share any concerns or worries they may have. • Ask if there is anything they are unsure or worried about• Do a trial run of the journey to school• Help your child prepare by getting everything (uniform,

stationery, money, etc) ready the night before• Keep a copy of the timetable where it can be easily seen; as a

reminder for days when certain books, or PE kit, are needed • Take an interest in what they are learning and help them • Take an interest in new friends they are making • Encourage them to take part in after-school clubs and

activities – they can help your child learn new things in a funway and increase the overall motivation to learn. They willalso be meeting lots of new friends through their newactivities, which will help them settle in easier.

• Make a note of key school events on a wall planner orcalendar, for example school productions, parents' evenings, sport days.

To find out more about the school you can:• Attend school events. • Attend Parents’ EveningsIntroductory events and induction evenings are designed to letyou meet teachers and see the environment your child will belearning in. If you cannot attend these sessions or your child isstarting a new school mid term, contact the school and ask ifyou can go along at another time.
