Math In the K-2 math group, we have been working on place value. Place value is a very important concept in math and working with manipulatives first helps students understand the concept of 'tenness'. After students have a good understanding of these concepts, symbolic work (worksheets) is introduced. Some students have been working with numbers up to 20 and 30 and others are working with numbers up to and over 100. At home, help your child by having them count and group a collection of things. Ask them how they grouped the collection. If they have put them in tens and ones, ensure him/her to tell you how many groups of tens and leftover ones.
The Grade 3s are working with Cathy on inverse multiplication and division equations.
Earthquake Drill On Tuesday we practised a whole school earthquake drill. We discussed what to do in different scenarios and in different places of the school. We stressed the importance of practising correctly and often, so one knows what to do in an emergency. Overall, the children did a good job. Your children may have questions about earthquakes. Always gauge and censor your conversations and exposure to the media, to ensure that is not too stressful or scary a topic. Next week we will practise a lock down drill.
