Frequently Asked QuestionsPlease read the Parent Handbook prior to sending your child to camp. This short survival guide will be available online at our secure J-Camp 2012 parent website once registration is completed.

Which camp do I sign up for?• Look over the descriptions of each type of camp within your child’s grade level.• Talk with your child to see what fits his or her interests.• All camps are designed to meet the needs of all campers, regardless of swimming level, skills or endurance level.• For the widest range of activities, we recommend signing up for one of our two-week traditional camp sessions.• To have a specialized camp experience, try our specialty and sports camps.• Refer to our Summer Camp Schedule on pages 12–13 for a better overview of all the options.• Register your child in a variety of camps for a richer experience.

Where do I drop off my child? All camps meet at the Oshman Family JCC. We offer both express drop-off and walk-up. If campers need to register on the first day of camp, please visit the Camp Office in room D123. To view a detailed map of your drop-off route, visit www.paloaltojcc.org/camps

What hours does camp typically run?Camp runs from 9:00 AM–3:30 PM daily. On some field trip days, camp will end at 4:00 PM. Details will be available on the parent website. We offer PM Care options for an additional fee (see page 20).

Do I need to sign my child in and out each day?The OFJCC requires that all children be properly signed in by an authorized adult and turned over to a J-Camp staff person. All campers must be signed out by an authorized adult, even if they are participating in another OFJCC program immediately following J-Camp excluding PM Care or After Camp Clubs. Please note that it is our responsibility to ensure your child leaves with the appropriate person each day. Therefore, we will ask for photo identification daily for your child’s safety. If you are going to be late, please call the Camp Office immediately at (650) 223-8622.

how many staff members will be watching my camper? We operate on the following ratios which are required by the American Camp Association.

• 1:6 for campers entering kindergarten• 1:8 for campers entering grades 1–3• 1:10 for campers entering grades 4–6• 1:10 for campers entering grades 7–12• 1:8 for campers in Post-Camp, which has a wider age range

Does my child receive a J-Camp t-shirt?All school age campers receive a free t-shirt each session!

What should my children bring/wear to J-Camp?All campers must bring their own lunch, a small snack and a drink each day. J-Camp will provide an additional afternoon snack. Please send only non-perishable foods. Note: no nut products, pork or shellfish are permitted. Campers should also bring a labeled water bottle, sunscreen, swimsuit, towel, sweatshirt and a change of clothes for really messy days. Campers should wear close-toed shoes and clothes in which they can play hard and get dirty.

What should my children not bring to J-Camp?Campers may not bring video games, personal CD players/stereos/iPods, expensive jewelry/watches, money, toys and card games, alcohol or drugs, vehicles, animals, weapons or cell phones. The OFJCC is not responsible for lost or stolen items and will not provide reimbursement for them.

What if my camper needs to take medication during camp?In order for a camper’s unit leader to administer medication, their prescription and over-the-counter medication must be checked in at our camp information center located at camper drop-off. Please complete the Medication Disbursement Section of your camper’s Health History Form.

how will my camper be transported to and from field trips?J-Camp transports campers on chartered school buses that are routinely inspected by the California Highway Patrol. The bus drivers have completed a background check and drug/alcohol test. Departure and arrival times as well as field trips themselves are subject to change without notice.

Can I sign my child up for a camp if he/she is not entering the grade specified? No. Campers must be entering the indicated grade for the fall 2012–2013 school year.Camps are designed with curriculum and programming for campers of a certain grade. Campers entering a pre-kindergarten program should enroll in T’enna Camp (page 2).

Will you prorate a one or two-week session? We believe that your child will have his or her best camp experience by attending a full camp session. Additionally, we pay our vendors, staff and transportation by the session. For these reasons, we do not prorate camps.

What if my child needs special assistance?J-Camp tries to accommodate all campers. If your child needs special assistance, please call the Youth Department at (650) 223-8622. Our capacity to accommodate your child will depend on which camps are best suited for your child and what assistance we can provide. All requests regarding special needs must be made before registration. J-Camp cannot supply one-on-one aides.
