Roads Highway 401 links Oshawa with Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Detroit and points beyond. The extension of Highway 407 is underway and will provide Oshawa with another point of access across the GTA in 2015.

RailOshawa offers convenient access to the CN Rail system, the only transcontinental rail network in North America. In addition, CP Rail connects Canada’s year-round ports from the east to the west, a key part of the strategic Montreal to Chicago rail corridor.cpr.ca cn.ca

SeawayAccessible from April to December, the Port of Oshawa accommodates any size or type of vessel that transits the St. Lawrence Seaway System. Assets making the Port of Oshawa a logical choice for moving cargo into world trade zones include customs point of entry, equipment to handle all cargos, 485 metres of total berth length, water depth of 8.2 metres and a large turning basin.portofoshawa.ca

AirThe Oshawa Airport is an executive-level airport that can accommodate a range of aircraft – from small recreational planes and 20-passenger business jets to 70-passenger turbo prop commuters. Passenger Services Regularly scheduled bus services are available through both GO Transit and Durham Region Transit (DRT). In 2013, DRT launched a new fleet of buses to operate the new DRT Pulse service – an expedited service running seven days a week. Rail passenger services are available

through GO Transit and VIA Rail from the Oshawa Train Station.

Development Charges & IncentivesThe City of Oshawa offers competitive development charges in the GTA. Incentives for new developments also include reduced charges for certain office buildings, as well as exemptions on the City’s portion of development charges for eligible industrial and downtown projects.

DEVELOPMENTOshawa is continuing to grow and attract investment. In 2013,

more than $369 million in building permit values were issued, with the highest year for residential permits on record.

IncentivesThe ongoing development of Oshawa’s downtown core is supported by a number of incentive programs, intended to attract new business and residents to downtown. oshawa.ca/incentives

Pedestrian CountsEvery year, pedestrian counts are conducted at Downtown intersections – key information that is used by new business start-ups and investors.

EntertainmentThe General Motors Centre is the region’s hub for live sports, concerts and entertainment. In 2013, the GM Centre was chosen to be a host location for both Boxing and Weightlifting events for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games. The Centre was also ranked #14 in the world by Venues Magazine in its ‘2012 Year-End Stops’ report for venues of 5,001 – 8,000 capacity.

February 2014 was a record-breaking month for the GM Centre, welcoming more than 55,000 fans to see acts like Elton John, Hedley, Barenaked Ladies, Jason Aldean and more.

Entrepreneurship Small businesses are significant drivers of the local economy and there are a variety of support services available within Oshawa and throughout the region to help entrepreneurs and small businesses bring their ideas to life. Personal Income Tax Annual tax that is calculated based on income earned. Ontario’s income tax rates are comparable to rates in the U.S., Japan and France and considerably lower than rates in Ireland, Italy and Germany (based on earnings of $60,000/year).

IncentivesMunicipalThe City of Oshawa offers a variety of incentive programs to support private investment and development in key areas.

• The City’s portion of Development Charges has been eliminated for industrial and downtown development projects.

• Brownfield Community Improvement Plan: offers property tax cancellation and a redevelopment grant.

• Central Business District Community Improvement Plan: assists property owners with building façade and accessibility improvements, building code upgrades or assistance with building permit fees for key redevelopment projects.

• Simcoe Street South Community Improvement Plan: assists property owners with building façade improvements.

• University and College Area Community Improvement Plan: designed for the redevelopment of higher density residential properties in the University and College Area, is a grant instrument that reduces the portion of City taxes attributable to the increased assessment over a 10-year period.

• Property Tax Cancellation: a component of a select number of Community Incentive Programs offered by the City.

Federal and ProvincialThe federal and provincial governments also provide programming and incentives in the following categories:

Creative Financing In 2012, Oshawa received a Brownie Award from the Canadian Urban Institute in the Financing, Risk Management and Partnerships Category for the development of the Village Suites student housing project with Durham College and UOIT.

Interval Meter

Customers that expect to have an annual average peak of 200 kW or more will require an interval meter. An interval meter records the customer’s hourly energy use via a dedicated phone line. Customers are billed the Hourly Ontario Energy Price (HOEP) except in circumstances where they are signed with a retailer or eligible for the regulated rate plan.

Non-Interval Meter

Customers that expect to have an annual average peak of 50 kW and less than 200 kW have a non-interval meter which records the customers total kWh’s - there is no record of the amount of load on an interval basis. Customers are billed the Weighted Average Price (WAP) except in circumstances where they are signed with a retailer or eligible for the regulated rate plan.

Electric PowerElectric power is distributed by Oshawa Power and Utilities Corporation (OPUC), which offers a number of energy saving programs for residents and businesses. OPUC can also evaluate the possibility of installing energy cogeneration infrastructure for customers with high capacity electrical and thermal loads. opuc.on.ca.

Durham CollegeDurham College has been part of the Oshawa community for more than 40 years and enrols more than 7,900 full-time students, thousands of part-time students and more than 1,400 apprentices each year.

Durham College’s Office of Research Services and Innovation is dedicated to building knowledge and advancing solutions and is part of the Colleges of Ontario Network for Industry Innovation (CONII).

Customized corporate training services are also available through Durham College’s Corporate Training Services. The College provides customized, relevant and effective technical training designed to meet industry needs. Businesses in the GTA have been relying on Durham College for more than three decades to develop innovative business solutions.

In 2013, Durham College opened the new Centre for Food in the neighbouring Town of Whitby. This unique Centre focuses on a ‘field-to-fork’ concept with emphasis on the harvesting, storage, processing, packaging, sale and consumption of food.durhamcollege.ca

EDUCATIONFrom pre-school to University, Oshawa has excellent options

for education at all levels. Several secondary schools in Oshawa provide specialty options for students in areas such as skilled trades,

environmental studies and the performing arts. The city is also home to more than 18,000 full time post-secondary students.

Oshawa is the proud home of General Motors (GM) Canada’s Headquaters, Autoplex and Canadian Regional Engineering Centre. Ongoing investments in R&D include electrical systems, chassis technology innovation, Compressed Natural Gas engineering, and software and controls.

HIGHLIGHTSOshawa’s location within Durham Region (Ontario’s Energy Capital) coupled with the local presence of innovative companies and relevant post-secondary programs have established Energy Generation as a prominent economic sector.

UOIT’s Energy Research Centre (ERC) is unique to Canada and houses a number of programs related to wind, solar, hydrogen, hydraulic, nuclear and geothermal energies. Oshawa is the area’s hub for health technologies, education and service.

Health Facilities Include:Lakeridge Health Oshawa and the Lakeridge Health Education and Research Network (LHEARN) Centre – Lakeridge Health is Durham Region’s primary health care facility caring for more than 1,600 patients every single day. Lakeridge Health is also a training location for Queen’s University’s Family Medicine Residency Program and has recently welcomed its second cohort into the program. The LHEARN Centre, developed by Lakeridge Health in partnership with Queen’s University and UOIT, is a $6.6 million facility that houses state-of-the-art simulation labs and medical training environments.

Grandview Children’s Centre – is the only outpatient rehabilitation facility for children with special needs in Durham Region and offers a variety of programs and services including: Medical Services, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Language Pathology, Audiology, Family Support Services, Therapeutic Recreation Services and more.

Oshawa Clinic, Taunton Health Centre and Taunton Surgical Centre – delivers a broad range of health services and together with the Courtice Health Centre is the largest, multi-specialty medical group practice in Canada. The recently opened Taunton Surgical Centre houses a number of surgical specialists and operating rooms in addition to the Rothbart Centre for Pain Care that offers services similar to those offered at its flagship location on Dufferin Street in Toronto.

The health care industry continues to advance in Oshawa with ongoing research and educational programming through UOIT and Durham College – these practical programs ensure graduates are well equipped to provide the industry with the skilled workforce it needs. In addition, research continues to evolve in Oshawa through innovative projects like the Artemis Project, a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Informatics administered by Dr. Carolyn McGregor that collects critical information from premature babies to reduce infant mortality rates.

HIGHLIGHTSOshawa offers a well-established and connected network that is supportive for companies who work in the IT field. Dark fibre is available through Oshawa PUC Networks to service the business community and service providers.

Both UOIT and Durham College offer a variety of traditional and unique IT-related programming – the first of its kind in Canada, UOIT offers a Master of Information Technology Security (MITS), which is also one of few specialized programs in the world for IT security. UOIT also offers a Bachelor of Information Technology in Game Development and Entrepreneurship. Durham College offers several different programs from Animation and Media Production to Computer Programming and Mobile Computing.
