Program FormatThe LLM in International Business Law is available only as a full-
time program. The program starts either in early August or January
depending on whether you are required to take one of our preparatory
courses. While some students complete their program requirements
by late spring, many take a full year and complete the program in
August.
LLM courses will be offered in a combination of weekly and intensive
formats. Attendance in-person in Toronto is required.
Sample of Required CoursesIntroduction to Canadian Law [3 credits]
This course is designed to ensure that international students have
the background they need to study and communicate effectively
in the Canadian academic environment. It will cover: the history of
Canadian law, public law, Aboriginal rights, criminal law, family law,
torts, property law, and resource law.
International Business Transactions [6 credits]
International Business Transactions will use case studies to analyze
international business transactions including: forming the contract,
financing and payment techniques, and identifying and addressing
barriers to contract fulfillment. Examples will include the study of
import/export of goods and services, technology transfers, joint
ventures and foreign direct investment. The course will address the
challenges of trans-border electronic transactions and doing business
on the internet.
International Commercial Banking [6 credits]
This course provides an introduction to the law that governs
international commercial banking. Topics will include foreign currency
and international deposits, the law of international negotiable
instruments, letters of credit, various forms of international payment
systems, and international lending.
Elective CoursesElectives may be chosen from remaining International Business
Law Core courses and/or selected courses offered through other
complementary LLM specializations or the JD program at Osgoode
Hall Law School. Elective courses can also be chosen from our other
Professional LLM specializations including Business, Intellectual
Property, and Securities Law, as well as core Canadian law courses
designed to meet the requirements of the National Committee
of Accreditation (NCA) offered through the Canadian Common
Law specialization. Certain elective courses have prerequisite
requirements. Students wishing to take NCA-approved courses must
meet the minimum language requirement for the LLM in Canadian
Common Law.
LLM students in JD courses will complete one or more assignments
or modified exams to reflect graduate-level participation. Upper
Year JD courses each count for 3 credits towards the LLM program
requirements. First-year JD courses, moots and other experiential
education programs, and courses in other Faculties are not available
for International LLM students.
Optional InternshipOne of the popular features of our LLM in International Business
Law is the opportunity for you to apply for internship placements.
The internship is an elective two-month course in the summer term
following completion of the IBL coursework. Because internship
hosts select candidates as part of a formal interview process, we
help you prepare your application materials and become familiar
with Canadian interview protocols. We also provide information and
supporting documents for necessary work visas.
The following are examples of the types of work that you are
expected to perform while on internship: legal research and
writing, reviewing and summarizing documents and files, taking
notes of meetings, legal drafting, and helping with translation and
interpretation of documents. Note: Not all courses are offered every year, and that Faculty, curriculum, course descriptions and degree requirements are subject to change without notice
