What is SAVE Dade?SAVE Dade is recognized as Miami-Dade County’s leading organization dedicated to protecting people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) against discrimination.

Since 1993, SAVE Dade has been advocating for equal rights for persons of all sexual orientations and gender identities.  We accomplish this through grassroots action focused on: O Political Advocacy – working to promote local, state, and

federal policy change by building community consensus;O Community Outreach – changing hearts and minds by

educating    the people of Miami-Dade County about LGBT issues; and

O Candidate Endorsements – supporting political leaders     committed to ending LGBT discrimination.

My TasksO I was hired to create a new website

and maintain data for the SAVE Dade organization. This included redesigning the website, adding user connectivity, and allowing for a more efficient method of organizing data.

O I focused primarily on user setup, and the “look” of the site.

PurposeO SAVE Dade has suffered from

unnecessary spending when creating reports and when processing payments. They also had unorganized data for their old website. They needed a change.

TechnologiesO SAVE Dade does not run its own server.

This led to many initial problems which took a couple of weeks to resolve.

O Drupal – CMS engineO CiviCRM – A client for customer relationsO MySQL (with innoDB) – Database EngineO Apache 2.0+ – Web ServerO … lots of PHP and more

DrupalO Drupal is an open

source content management platform powering millions of websites and applications. It allows us to easily handle user registration and edit it to fit SAVE Dade’s needs.

CiviCRM

O CiviCrm is a Consituent Relationship Management system. It is web-based, internationalized, and designed specifically to meet the needs of advocacy, non-profit and non-governmental groups.

CiviContribute O This is CiviCRM’s handler for

processing donations and other forms of money handling.

CiviEventsO I’ve combined CiviCRM’s

event lists with a calendar module to make it easy to find events and register for things that one would like to sign up for, such as volunteering to phone bank, poll, or attend a fundraiser.

CiviMailO Setting up cron jobs

CiviReportO CiviCRM’s method of

report managing, with many options available to keep track of pledges, volunteers, costituents, etc.

The FutureO I will have submitted an easily-

configurable template and the site will definitely change in the years and will be accessible to more modules.
