1. News From the Library

Over the last couple of weeks, all the primary grades have been involved in the Forest of Reading program. The Forest of Reading is Canada's largest recreational reading program. This initiative of the Ontario Library Association (OLA) offers eight reading programs to encourage a love of reading in people of all ages. The Forest helps celebrate Canadian books, publishers, authors and illustrators. More than 250,000 readers participate annually from their School and/or Public Library.

With support from our parent council, our school was able to purchase 20 Blue Spruce picture books for the program. As well as 10, award winning Silver birch novels for the junior/intermediate grades.

On January 27th families around the province celebrated Family Literacy Day. At Oscar Peterson we hosted a great Canadian author, Andrew Larsen. He has written some well known books such as, Bella and the Bunny, The Imaginary Garden, In the Tree House, Bye, Bye, Butterflies and The Luck of Jude Charlie’s Dirt Day. The students in grades K-6 enjoyed a period with Mr. Larsen learning about the process of writing and how your dreams of a writer can become a reality. Thank you to our Parent council who are supporting us with this author visit!

Students in grades 3-8 will also have an author visit on February 11th when Michael Wade, author of the “And then it happened series” comes to our school!

Thank you very much! L. Giancoulos Teacher-Librarian

2. Board Games/Winter Play

Over the winter months there are times when, due to unsafe conditions or temperatures, students are required to have an indoor recess. If you have any board games you would like to donate to classes that are in good condition with all of the pieces please send them into the office.

We are also looking for gently used donations for our JK/SK classes to use during outdoor play. Specifically the team is looking for: small shovels, brick makers, pull sleds and sidewalk chalk. Thank you from the JK/SK staff.

3. Parking and Kiss and Ride

Please remember when dropping off/picking up students to use the Kiss & Ride on the west side of the school. Staff supervise this area from 8:35-8:50. To help keep drop-offs running smoothly, parents are asked not to park in this area. Our staff will help your children to get in or out of the car. If you feel the need to personally walk your child to the yard, please park on the road as parking spaces are designated for staff. A reminder that the bus loop is not to be used for this purpose and vehicles must not be parked in this area at any time as it is a designated Fire Zone. The York Region Police and Town By-Laws department are monitoring the use of both of these areas. Please take care when driving as there are many children entering and exiting the building before and after school. Thank you for your help in order to keep our students safe.

4. Oscar Peterson Breakfast Program

What: A healthy breakfast for students

When: Tuesday mornings 8:30-8:50

Where: Downstairs hallway, outside Mrs. Itwarie’s classroom

How: Enter the school using the East Doors (parking lot by the daycare).Tables will be set up where you will be given your breakfast. You can eat in the hallway and then exit through the Southeast doors (by the music room).

5. News in Sports On January26th students from grades 4-8 participated in a free throw competition at Wendat Village P.S. As a team, OPPS did very well coming away with two second place finishes and two first place finishes. Good luck to Alvin and Deema as they compete at Brother Andre on February 4th. Our Junior Co-ed Volleyball team also did a great job at their area tournament, congratulations to them. In February, our basketball teams will compete in an area tournament at Mulock High School. We wish them luck at the tournament. Great job Jazz!

6. Lunch Time School Assistants Needed

We are currently looking for lunch time school assistants who would be available to work between 12:50 p.m. and 1:50 p.m. This position involves being part of a team to supervise and monitor the students while they eat lunch in their classrooms and while they play outside on the yard. If you are interested please inquire at the main office.

7. 2015 Spring World Classroom Program (for students and their families)

International Education Services (IES) of the York Region District School Board helps students from other countries in the world (we call them “international students”) attend our schools and live with local families in York Region. The reason international students choose to come here is to improve their English and learn about our culture and our country.

February, 2015

This Spring (tentatively April 10 to May 23), a group of 25 students from the Shanghai Xiawai International School are coming to several schools in York Region. The visiting students need to live with a local family who have children that attend a YRDSB elementary school. What we do is match a visiting Chinese student to a York Region family/student. The Chinese visitor will live with the local family and they will go to school together for about six weeks, go on two excursions with the whole group, and attend a World Classroom party. Families who host a visiting student receive $225 per week to cover the cost of hosting the student.

By sharing your home, family and school with your visitor from China, you will also get to learn about their culture and country… and maybe even learn a little bit of Mandarin or Shanhainese!

If your family is interested in the above experience please pick up an application package at the main office. The application must be completed by parents and returned to Jane Macpherson or Erin Cranney for approval no later than February 27th. We will then forward your completed application to International Education Services for consideration.

Please take the time to read the attachments to this e-Bulletin. They provide information regarding school and community initiatives.
