BIN LADEN

• Bin Laden was the leader of a Middle Eastern terrorists group called, “Al Qaeda”

• An exiled member of the Saudi Arabian Royal Family.

• Owner of a multibillion dollar construction empire. (his inheritance funded al-Qaeda)

• Leader of the 9/11 attacks on the United States.

WHAT IS AL QAEDA?

• Formed by Osama bin Laden

• Originally created to assist Sunni Islamic extremists fighting with the Afghan resistance against the Soviet Union.

• Today al-Qaeda aims to establish a pan Islamic caliphate throughout the world. It uses terrorism in an effort to overthrow Arab regimes it deems “non-Islamic” and force Westerners and non Muslims from Muslim countries.

AL QAEDA CON’T.

• The principal stated aims of al-Qaeda are to drive Americans and American influence out of all Muslim nations, especially Saudi Arabia; destroy Israel; and topple pro-Western dictatorships around the Middle East. Bin Laden also said that he wishes to unite all Muslims and establish, by force if necessary, an Islamic nation adhering to the rule of the first Caliphs.

• According to bin Laden's 1998 fatwa (religious decree), it is the duty of Muslims around the world to wage holy war on the U.S., American citizens, and Jews. Muslims who do not heed this call are declared apostates (people who have forsaken their faith).

AL QAEDA CON’T.

• Al-Qaeda's ideology, often referred to as "jihadism," is marked by a willingness to kill "apostate" —and Shiite—Muslims and an emphasis on jihad. Although "jihadism" is at odds with nearly all Islamic religious thought, it has its roots in the work of two modern Sunni Islamic thinkers: Mohammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab and Sayyid Qutb.

• Al-Wahhab was an 18th-century reformer who claimed that Islam had been corrupted a generation or so after the death of Mohammed. He denounced any theology or customs developed after that as non-Islamic, including more than 1,000 years of religious scholarship. He and his supporters took over what is now Saudi Arabia, where Wahhabism remains the dominant school of religious thought.

• Sayyid Qutb, a radical Egyptian scholar of the mid-20th century, declared Western civilization the enemy of Islam, denounced leaders of Muslim nations for not following Islam closely enough, and taught that jihad should be undertaken not just to defend Islam, but to purify it.

BIN LADEN’S HOME INABBOTTABAD, PAKISTAN

• Bin Laden had spent one million dollars to build it. Living well below his means.

• The high walls topped with barbed wire and the guards gave away bin Laden’s hiding place.

• CIA operatives knew someone important and wanting to hide lived there

• The 3rd floor balcony had a 7ft tall wall so no one could see him and his family.

• The CIA saw on satellite footage a tall man walking around the compound and balcony and they began calling him the”Pacer.”

• CIA operatives and local informants believed the man was Bin Laden. They had enough information to confirm he would be there and there because he seldom left his hideout.

• Several intelligence organizations, CIA, FBI, and Special Forces aka the SEALs began to plan the invasion and attack of his house to capture him.

WHY BURY BIN LADEN AT SEA?

• The US used face recognition technology and DNA testing to verify the body was truly bin Laden.

• His body was washed and shrouded.

• Then the body was buried at sea within 12 hours. US officials stated this type of burial would stop the creation of a shrine for people to gather and honor bin Laden. Lessening the martyr effect in the process.

• According to Islamic ritual, the body must be washed, wrapped in a white shroud and buried within 24 hours of death.

• The grave must be arranged so the head of the deceased is facing Mecca.

• In some villages women are not permitted to attend the funerals because of the distraction caused by their wailing.
