Celebrating 45 Years In 1962, an early morning audience in Taipei, Taiwan heard for the first time “ Studio Classroom is on the air! This is your teacher Doris Brougham, Peng Meng-hui.” Little did she know how God would bless and increase the scope of this ministry. What began as a 6:30 a.m. live broadcast with a studio full of students has become a fixture on the educational landscape of Taiwan and continues to gain an audience around the world. Spiritual Emphasis Retreat

Members old and new from ORTV’s branch offices and headquarters gathered May 9-11 at a seaside resort for 2007’s Spiritual Emphasis Week. The group of nearly 250 staff received a renewal of vision as the speakers, Pastors Dale Wine and Andrew Kou, addressed the theme, “Making a Difference.” They challenged us to allow God to make a difference in us, so we can make a difference in the lives of others.

International OutreachIstanbul

Eunice, a missionary supported by ORTV, visited Taipei April 14-19 and shared the opportunity God has opened to her: a ministry at the western terminus of the Silk Road—Istanbul. The Back to Jerusalem movement is gaining momentum from the sacrificial service of Christians in China and central Asian nations like Kazakhstan, where Eunice recently ministered, as Christians take the gospel across Asia and back to Jerusalem.

UgandaFrom May 20 to 26, ORTV teacher Rev. Troy Peterson traveled with World

Vision-Taiwan for a visit to camps of internally displaced persons in Uganda, Africa due to rebels fighting against the government. Upon their return, the team held press conferences in Taiwan’s major cities where they reported the desperate situation of the refugees. Heavenly Melody sang at the gatherings in support of garnering aid for the suffering people of central Africa.

BangladeshJudy Lin, a beloved staff member of many years, joined her husband, Winston, in

Bangladesh at the end of June. The couple received Christ through the English Bible Study ministry, and Judy served in ORTV’s Outreach Department. She continues working with ORTV in outreach: at a local church in Dhaka through teaching English, and by helping Winston conduct Bible studies among the 10,000 overseas Chinese in Bangladesh, most who are there from mainland China to do business. Although 65 percent of Bangladeshis are Muslim, the democratic government permits the activity of other religious groups.

MalaysiaThe southeastern nation of Malaysia is nearly 24 percent ethnic Chinese. Just over 60 percent of all

Malaysians are adherents of the state religion, Sunni Islam. Among the 24.8 million Malaysians, less than 10 percent are Christian. For two weeks in April and again for 10 days in July, Heavenly Melody ministry teams held concerts in cities throughout East and West Malaysia. With thanksgiving they reported seeing God deliver people held in the grip of the devil.

IndonesiaThe cities of Medan and Jakarta in the world’s most populous Muslim nation,

Indonesia, were the mission field of an ORTV ministry team the first week of June. The team, comprised of Simon Hung, Lillian Wang, Mei-lian Huang and Jeanette Wang, shared the good news of Jesus Christ through music, art and personal testimony to audiences in this island nation of nearly 235 million people of which over 86 percent are Muslim. While evangelism is prohibited by law, over 70 percent of the estimated 5 million ethnic Chinese are now Protestant Christians, which provides a solid core of witnesses in a dark land.

Taiwan

During the Spring 2007 school semester, the Sunshine Singers and teachers lead by Liz Archer held dozens of school rallies based on the theme, “Life Is a Gift.” Reckoning total attendees at teacher-training seminars, English activities and headquarters’ visits, ORTV’s contact ministry through English teaching reached over 35,000 of Taiwan’s students. In an intensive two weeks, May 28 – June 8, the Singers and teachers held the last down-island tour of the school year.

Give Me 10!

On April 21, Studio Classroom launched the Give Me 10! campaign to encourage students to speak in English for 10 minutes a day. Through online forums, games and other creative and interactive ways offered on the Give Me 10! website, English learners can practice speaking in English at least 10 minutes every day.

A Small Seed

ORTV is partnering with the Christian Relief Organization in the “A Small Seed” project to raise money for after-school reading programs for poor and disadvantaged children. Recently, Heavenly Melody produced A Small Seed CD, a special-edition album offered out of concern for Taiwan’s social and public welfare. All profit from the sale of this CD before August 31, 2007, will be donated to this project.

A Personal Word

Dear Doris,It is my honor to be

granted the “2007 Anti-Drug Accomplishment Award” by the government of Taiwan. Special thanks go to you and Simon. I could never become who I am today without your unconditional love and acceptance.

Drugs had once ruined my life, marriage and family. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to work for ORTV and allowing me to rebuild my life. God has been guiding and protecting me through ORTV. Only God himself could help me out of the darkest pit. No matter how hard I worked, only God’s touch could set me free from drugs. He also strengthened me, so I can go back to help people in the same pit. After these years of serving with Agape House helping drug addicted people, the Taiwan government will recognize me and I will meet President Chen on June 3 to receive the award.

Before receiving the honor, I want first to give my most humble appreciation to you. I thank God for your love, so I can be a testimony for Jesus today!

Love,Phillip Chang

(Phillip works in ORTV’s Taipei’s Audio Department.)

I Remember

Dear Doris,Thank the Lord!

Two and a half years ago, I was invited to a Chinese church in Temple City, CA where I heard about the Let’s Talk in English conversation class. I was very excited about that because I needed to learn how to communicate with people in English, The class was conducted once a week at the First Baptist Church in Covina. In the beginning, there were about six students. Now we have more than twenty. We are very blessed because we have excellent teachers. All the teachers are very kind and helpful. Thank you!

(Mr. Hwang takes three buses to attend our English class in Covina, CA.)

Passing Down the Love Nominated for Award

Heavenly Melody’s Passing Down the Love CD received nomination for Taiwan’s Best Religious Album at the 2007 Golden Melody Awards, Taiwan’s version of the Emmys, held in Taipei on June 2.
