A ccording to Taoist and Buddhist belief, the seventh month of the lunar calendar each year brings the release of malevolent spirits of the dead. The 15th day of Ghost Month, which fell on August 19th this year, marked the opening of the Gate of Hell. On this day, hungry and angry ghosts, according to believers, were freed to wreck havoc in the lives of people who presented no offerings of food or paper money. Among the large majority of Taiwanese, fear is a strong motivation for placating these ghastly spirits. Stories of ghosts have become a part of the culture: attacking people to fulfill their needs, drowning swimmers to free wandering ghosts from hell, impersonating a bride or groom in a wedding, or causing a fatal car accident. According to Taoist and Buddhist belief, the seventh month of the lunar calendar each year brings the release of malevolent spirits of the dead. The 15th day of Ghost Month, which fell on August 19th this year, marked the opening of the Gate of Hell. On this day, hungry

and angry ghosts, according to believers, were freed to wreck havoc in the lives of people who presented no offerings of food or paper money.

Surprisingly many Western-educated professionals still hold these beliefs.

The powers of darkness are strongly at work in Taiwan. The hearts of 96 percent of Taiwan’s population remain in captivity to the occult practices of Eastern religions. Join us in fervent prayer for the deliverance from darkness that only God can give.

Taiwan Prayer Breakfast

Celebrating 140 years of Protestant missionary activity in Taiwan, the Christian church joined for prayer in June under the theme, “Thanksgiving, Unity and Mission.” Among those honored as missionaries was ORTV founder, Doris Brougham, who has served 57 years in Asia.

Taiwan Missionary Fellowship Retreat

The 2005 gathering of evangelical missionaries in Taiwan for the annual Taiwan Missionary Fellowship (TMF) Retreat in July included Doris Brougham. During an evening service, she gave a testimony challenging and encouraging her fellow

missionaries to keep pressing on in the work of our Lord. Accompanying Doris and leading the worship were ORTV’s Heavenly Melody and the Sunshine Singers.

Bible Study

In mid-September, the weekly English Bible study outreach conducted by ORTV staff returned to the Home of Christ Church in central Taipei. Three years ago, the outreach event Friday Night

Live was moved to Shihlin Bread of Life Church while the other church was renovated. English Bible study outreach is also held weekly by ORTV staff in Kaohsiung.

Summer Interns

ORTV’s summer 2005 interns included children of staff as well as children of overseas Chinese Christian friends wanting to serve in Taiwan. The eight interns were David

Wang, Gina Wang, Jack Kao, Jennifer Chen, Kristine Peterson, Roy Chi, Stanley Tsai and Timothy Tao. Working with staff in the Audio, English, IT, Music and TV departments, the interns had opportunities to begin learning a broad range of practical skills.

Taipei Visitors

More than 40 officers from the National Police Administration (NPA) in Taiwan visited ORTV in June. They toured the facilities, including our recording studios where they observed

a filming of Advanced Topic Talks. ORTV founder, Doris Brougham, serves as English Consultant to the NPA, which oversees the entire police force in Taiwan. ORTV staff regularly teaches English classes at the NPA headquarters in Taipei.

Summer MissionsIndiaORTV staff members Hazel Johansen and Julie Hartlé focused on village ministry and leadership training in northern India during a July mission trip. Representing ORTV and accompanying a Christian organization based in Taiwan, they presented a gift to the village’s Christian school earmarked to assist it in building a library.

IndonesiaA Heavenly Melody team of four singers, accompanied by Sun Yueh, Dr. Simon Hung and Lillian Wang, brought back exciting reports of their joint evangelistic meetings, seminars and school meetings in Indonesia (pop. 238 million) at the end of July. They partnered with local churches in Medan to raise support for the reconstruction of tsunami and earthquake-stricken Aceh and Sumatra provinces. Churches in Medan worked together for the first time in 20 years.

MacauIn August, Doris and the Heavenly Melody Singers participated in the “More Abundant Life” evangelistic campaign sponsored by local churches in Macau for outreach to the 99 percent of the small Chinese territory (pop. 451,000) who are not Christian. Among the unprecedented numbers attending were mainlanders from the interior of China who traveled great distances to get there. An estimated 4000 people responded to affirm faith in Christ.Below is an excerpt from a letter written to Doris from an 89-year-old Shanghai woman. She met Doris in July during evangelistic meetings held in Macau, and attended by the Heavenly Melody Singers.

I’m so happy to meet you, dear Doris! I’m Julia Tong, 89 years old. I had no chance to learn English in school. Can you help me to learn English? Am I too old for learning it? I wish that I can learn the first grade, Let’s Talk in English, then with your permission I will learn the second part, Studio Classroom. I think I don’t need the third part; I’m sure it is too difficult for an old woman to learn. So Doris, just let me be your first-class student.

Influence of Children’s Character-Building Stories

ORTV North American Director, Susan Cheng, taught a children’s class in the Los Angeles area using activities from the six Children’s Character-Building

Stories. These bilingual stories contain activities, songs and dramatized audio as learning tools. During the past year, the Department of Education in Taiwan recognized four books from the series with an award given for educational materials having a good influence on children.

Your Help Needed: Filipino Christmas Cheer Project

Over 300,000 migrant workers labor in Taiwan. Filipinos account for nearly 30 percent of this group. They work in factories, on construction projects, and in homes as domestic helpers and caregivers. Every cent they can spare from their meager salaries is sent home to family in the

Philippines for their financial support. Many have young children there being cared for by relatives. ORTV is helping the Filipino congregation at the Taipei International Church produce 5000 Gospel

Christmas CDs. Production costs will be about US $2 for each CD. Will you extend your helping hand this Christmas season to help give Filipino migrant workers in Taiwan opportunities to come to know the true meaning of Christmas? Just think, US $20 will give 10 of these workers the message of Christmas, as well as comfort the hearts of those who desperately miss their families.
