shoulder dislocation: when the head of thehumerus comes out from its socket(glenoidcavity),then it is called shoulder dislocation.

There are different types of shoulder dislocation:

1-anterior dislocation: happens when thedirection of the dislocation is anterior (most

    common)2-inferior dislocation: happens when the

direction of the dislocation is inferior

3 - posterior dislocation: happens when thedirection of the dislocation is posterior

C auses:- Trauma- Shoulder ligaments laxity (glenohumeral

ligaments)- Irritation of rotator cuff muscles (over

    use and/or weakness)

Shoulder subluxation: it is partialdislocation of the shoulder joint.

C auses:- fall onto your outstretched arm- Laxity of sh. Ligaments- Trauma to shoulder

    Symptoms for both:

    - feel that the sh. Is out of its place- Pain, weakness, numbness (stretch to

axillary nerve). Numbness in theshoulder and/or arm.A rm held at the side, usually slightlyaway from the body with the forearm

turned outwardLoss of the normal rounded contour of the deltoid muscle

Ov er v iew of Sh. orthosis

Shoulder orthosis can be applied on the shoulder that encountered dislocation or subluxation inaddition to medication and physical therapy.

Shoulder orthosis can also be used to preventshoulder dislocation/subluxation, specially for athletesShoulder orthosis can play a small role inprevention and treatment of sh.dislocation/subluxation specially for athletesbecause wearing the orthosis while competingreduces their performance, so athletes cant returnto their sports when they are having

    sh.dislocation/subluxation.

A nterior dislocation/subluxation: it canbe treated non operatively by using asling ( it means to hang something).

When applying a sling the shoulder mustbe held in external rotation 10-20 or90 degrees (according to differentstudies) because recent study from

Japan stated that external rotation of sh.Joint puts the ligaments in the mostcorrect position for healing.

It is important that the external rotationsling must be configured properly-thearm should be held tightly against theside, and the forearm should be pointingaway from the bodyinternal rotation of the sh.joint is not

recommended because the sh.jointligaments are not properly aligned.

abduction immobilizer: are shoulder immobilizers but with a pillow under theaxilla (arm pit), to reduce the stress onthe neck and give more freedom, usedfor sh.dislocation/subluxation. It notsimilar to external rotation sling and the

outcomes of these two are different.
