1 Iraqi Syrian Refugee Summer Appeal Report Orthodox Initiative and Middle East Council of Churches Amman, Jordan August 2015 We are coming to the end of another summer. For a second time this year, the weather in Jordan has been unusual. This past week, a heat wave struck Jordan sending the temperatures into the 40sCelsius (100sFahrenheit) in Amman, and even higher in other parts of the county. Along with the heat came large sand storms, unusual in northern Jordan. Through the summer, Jordan has still been the home for millions of displaced people in the Middle East. Day by day, the number of Syrian and Iraqi refugees fleeing their homes for safer places continues to grow, all while international coverage and attention is not enough. Here at the Orthodox Initiative of the Middle East Council of Churches, we have been continuing our work through the summer to bring essential items to those in our community who need them most. This summer, with the unusual weather and continuing conflicts, these needs are amplified. As the conflicts in the region continue, displaced people and refugees are starting to move into longterm housing options. As the camps in the north of Jordan have become over populated, refugees have been moving throughout the country. Many of them have found themselves in Amman living in small apartments in the lower income sections of the city, where the prices of rent are less expensive. International donors often fund these apartments for short periods, such as an embassy renting a certain number of apartments for sixmonth periods and finding families to live in them. The Christian communities who have been fleeing Iraq since the summer of 2014 have faced the same challenges. When many of them came to Jordan, local churches and church communities were the first to host them. As the year went on, the majority of them have moved into apartments in surrounding neighborhoods. Although many have had the opportunity to move into private spaces, these apartments are sparse often unfurnished, worn down, and in need of essential items to live with dignity. In addition, some of these apartments have lots of mold, increasing the future risks of health and respiratory issues yet another challenge for these families that have faced so much.
