Welcome to the Chapel for our worship this morning. Our service is streamed (broadcast) live on the Old Royal Naval College Facebook page and YouTube Channel. Whilst we try our best to ensure that members of the congregation are not shown on camera this may occur momentarily. The setting of the mass is the ‘Mass in E flat’ by J. Rheinberger (1839-1901). Please note that due to Covid-19 restrictions there are a number of changes to our usual practices. The wearing of a face mask/face covering whilst attending a service is mandatory. We have masks available should you need one. Please speak to the Chaplain should you find wearing a face mask difficult. All are welcome to come forward to receive Holy Communion (bread only) or a blessing. These will be given and received in silence and standing. Please wait until directed to come forwards to the sanctuary steps.A collection will not be taken during the service but devices to receive your donations using contactless will be available as you leave the Chapel. A basket to receive cash will be on the table at the back. Please ask if these are not obvious to you. Closure has meant a substantial drop in income and we are very grateful for any donations to support the Chapel Fund. Details on gift aid for contactless donations are at the back of the service sheet. We are sorry that at this time we are unable to offer the use of the Queen Mary Undercroft as a self service crèche facility. Families are welcome to go outside and then re-enter to give children a break during the service. Toilets and handwashing facilities are available on request, please ask a member of staff.Refreshments after the service are currently suspended.

Order of ServiceINTROIT sung by the choir

Hide not thou thy face from us, O Lord, and cast not off thy servant in thy displeasure;for we confess our sins unto theeand hide not our unrighteousness. For thy mercy's sake, deliver us from all our sins.

THE GATHERINGTHE LORD’S PRAYERAll Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy

name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. Amen.

PRAYER OF PREPARATIONAll Almighty God, unto whom all hearts be open, all

desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid; Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen

THE COMMANDMENTSOur Lord Jesus Christ said: Hear O Israel, The Lord our God is one Lord; and thou shalt love the Lord thy God

with all thy heart, with all thy soul, with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. This is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.

All Lord, have mercy upon us, and write all these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee.

THE COLLECT The Lord be with you.

All And with thy spirit.Let us pray.

The Collect for the Sunday after Ascension Day

O GOD the King of glory, who hast exalted thine only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph unto thy kingdom in heaven: We beseech thee, leave us not comfortless; but send to us thine Holy Ghost to comfort us, and exalt us unto the same place whither our Saviour Christ is gone before, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end.

All Amen.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORDFirst Reading Acts 1: 15-17, 21-end

Read by Susan Blackall

In those days Peter stood up among the brethren (the company of persons was in all about a hundred and twenty), and said, “Brethren, the scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David, concerning Judas who was guide to those who arrested Jesus. For he was numbered among us, and was allotted his share in this ministry.

So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us—one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection.” And they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. And they prayed and said, “Lord, who knowest the hearts of all men, show which one of these two thou hast chosen to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside, to go to his own place.” And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias; and he was enrolled with the eleven apostles. This is the word of the Lord.

All Thanks be to GodSecond Reading 1 John 5: 9-13 Read by James Hitchcock

If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater; for this is the testimony of God that he has borne witness to his Son. He who believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. He who does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne to his Son. And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has life; he who has not the Son of God has not life.

I write this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life. This is the word of the Lord.

BLESSED is the man that hath not walked in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stood in the way of sinners :

and hath not sat in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord :

and in his law will he exercise himself day and night.

And he shall be like a tree planted by the water-side : that will bring forth his fruit in due season.

His leaf also shall not wither : and look, whatsoever he doeth, it shall prosper.

As for the ungodly, it is not so with them : but they are like the chaff, which the wind scattereth away from the face of the earth.

Therefore the ungodly shall not be able to stand in the judgement :

neither the sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

But the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous : and the way of the ungodly shall perish.

GOSPEL Read by Nicolas Bevan

The Holy Gospel is written in the 17th chapter of the Gospel according to Saint John, beginning at the 6th verse.

All Glory be to Thee, O Lord.“I have manifested thy name to the men whom thou gavest me out of the world; thine they were, and thou gavest them to me, and they have kept thy word. Now they know that everything that thou hast given me is from thee; for I have given them the words which thou gavest me, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from thee; and they have believed that thou didst send me. I am praying for them; I am

not praying for the world but for those whom thou hast given me, for they are thine; all mine are thine, and thine are mine, and I am glorified in them. And now I am no more in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to thee. Holy Father, keep them in thy name, which thou hast given me, that they may be one, even as we are one. While I was with them, I kept them in thy name, which thou hast given me; I have guarded them, and none of them is lost but the son of perdition, that the scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. I have given them thy word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I do not pray that thou shouldst take them out of the world, but that thou shouldst keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; thy word is truth. As thou didst send me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be consecrated in truth. This is the Gospel of the Lord.

All Praise be to Thee, O Christ.

SERMON Revd. Pat Mann, ChaplainTHE NICENE CREEDAll I believe in one God the Father almighty,

maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible:And in one Lord Jesus Christ the only-begotten Son of God,begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father,

by whom all things were made;who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made man, and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried, and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father. And he shall come again with glory to judge both the quick and the dead: whose kingdom shall have no end.And I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and giver of life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified, who spake by the prophets. And I believe one catholic and apostolic Church.I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. And I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Unto our King sing praise seraphic-wise!Lift up your heads, ye lasting doors, they sing,And let the King of Glory enter in.Methinks I see Heaven’s sparkling courtiers flyIn flakes of glory down, him to attend,And hear heart-cramping notes of melodySurround his chariot as it did ascend:Mixing their music, making ev'ry stringMore to enravish, as they this tune sing.

Music: Gerald Finzi (1901-1956) Words: Edward Taylor (1646-1729)

INTERCESSIONS Let us pray for the whole state of Christ’s Church militant here in earth.

Brief biddings are given

Almighty and ever-living God, who by thy holy apostle hast taught us to make prayers and supplications, and to give thanks, for all men: we humbly beseech thee most mercifully to accept our alms and oblations, and to receive these our prayers, which we offer unto thy divine majesty; beseeching thee to inspire continually the universal Church with the spirit of truth, unity, and concord: and grant, that all they that do confess thy holy name may agree in the truth of thy holy word, and live in unity and godly love.We beseech thee also to save and defend all Christian kings, princes and governors; and specially thy servant Elizabeth our Queen, that under her we may be godly and quietly governed: and grant unto her whole Council, and to all that are put in authority under her, that they may truly and impartially minister justice, to the punishment of wickedness and vice, and to the maintenance of thy true religion and virtue.

Page 11: ornc.org · Web view2021/05/16  · Nicolas Bevan The Holy Gospel is written in the 17th chapter of the Gospel according to Saint John, beginning at the 6th verse. All Glory be to

Give grace, O heavenly Father, to all bishops, priests and deacons, that they may both by their life and doctrine set forth thy true and lively word, and rightly and duly administer thy holy sacraments: and to all thy people give thy heavenly grace; and specially to this congregation here present; that, with meek heart and due reverence, they may hear and receive thy holy word; truly serving thee in holiness and righteousness all the days of their life. And we most humbly beseech thee of thy goodness, O Lord, to comfort and succour all them, who in this transitory life are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity. And we also bless thy holy name for all thy servants departed this life in thy faith and fear; beseeching thee to give us grace so to follow their good examples, that with them we may be partakers of thy heavenly kingdom.Grant this, O Father, for Jesus Christ's sake, our only mediator and advocate.

All Amen. All then join in saying the Chapel Prayer

O eternal Lord God, our Creator and our Judge, hear our prayer as we offer to Thee our worship and thanksgiving.Keep us mindful of those who have conducted their business on the seas in the defence of this realm; those who have worshipped in this Chapel through the centuries and those who seek now both to follow their faithful example and to spread the glorious news of Thy gospel. Preserve us in all our doings and grant us Thy continuous help. We ask this in the name of Him whose Light we follow, shining as a beacon across the ocean of our life, even Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O Trinity of love and power,Our brethren shield in danger’s hour; From rock and tempest, fire and foe,Protect them whereso’er they go:And ever let there rise to TheeGlad hymns of praise from land and sea.

Words: William Whiting (1825-1878)

INVITATION TO CONFESSIONYe that do truly and earnestly repent you of your sins, and are in love and charity with your neighbours, and intend to lead a new life, following the commandments of God, and walking from henceforth in his holy ways: draw near with faith, and take this holy sacrament to your comfort; and make your humble confession to almighty God, meekly kneeling upon your knees.

CONFESSIONAll Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

maker of all things, judge of all men: we acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we, from time to time, most grievously have committed, by thought, word and deed, against thy divine majesty, provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them is grievous unto us; the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ's sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honour and glory of thy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

ABSOLUTIONAlmighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all them that with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him: have mercy upon you; pardon and deliver you from all your sins; confirm and strengthen you in all goodness; and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All Amen.

THE COMFORTABLE WORDSHear what comfortable words our Saviour Christ saith unto all that truly turn to him: Come unto me, all that travail and are heavy laden, and I will refresh you.

Matthew 11.28So God loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, to the end that all that believe in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

He is the one gone

before us, who calls us to be united in prayer as were his disciples in the upper room whilst they awaited his promised gift, the life-giving Spirit of Pentecost. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious name, evermore praising thee, and singing:

Choir Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth.Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua.Hosanna in excelsis.

Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

PRAYER OF HUMBLE ACCESSAll We do not presume to come to this thy table, O merciful

Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy table. But thou art the same Lord, whose property is always to have mercy: grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed through his most

precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

PRAYER OF CONSECRATIONAlmighty God, our heavenly Father, who of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there (by his one oblation of himself once offered) a full, perfect and sufficient sacrifice, oblation and satisfaction for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death, until his coming again: Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee; and grant that we receiving these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ's holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood: who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks, he brake it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you: do this in remembrance of me. Likewise after supper he took the cup; and, when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of this; for this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins: do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.

All Amen.AGNUS DEI
