SPECIAL EXHIBITS PLANNED UP UNTIL 2012 ORNAMENTING THE ORDINARY: CRAFTS OF SOUTH ASIA September 10, 2011 to January 1, 2012 Learn about the artistic styles, craftsmanship and craft traditions of South Asia’s many culturally diverse regions. This travelling exhibit, on loan from the Royal Ontario Museum explores the interaction between South Asia and the rest of the world, and how this interaction affected the craft industries. CABIN FEVER: WINTER IN ST. CATHARINES November 19, 2011 to March 25, 2012 How did people in St. Catharines survive the climatic conditions such as deep cold, wind or snow during the winter months? Produced by the St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre, this exhibit showcases the daily routines of the early settler era to the remarkable Blizzard of ‘77. MITTEN TREE From November 19th to January 1st, 2012 donate warm woolens, including mittens, hats and scarves, to the Mitten Tree. The wintertime essentials will then be distributed to Community Care of St. Catharines and Thorold to families and children in need. CHILD’S PLAY: A CENTURY OF TOYS 1850’S – 1950’S January 21, 2012 to April 1, 2012 Toys have been a part of a child’s experience since prehistoric times, helping to pass the time and impart knowledge and skills for survival. From homemade playthings to vast retail empires Child’s Play, on loan from the Haldimand Museum examines a century of toys, games and childhood pastimes. FAKES AND FORGERIES: YESTERDAY AND TODAY April 14, 2012 to August 26, 2012 Learn how to tell the authentic pieces from sly forgeries and discover the fascinating lengths forgers will go to hoodwink the unwary in this interactive exhibition on loan from the Royal Ontario Museum. PLANNING YOUR VISIT Tour and programs must be booked a minimum of 2 weeks in advance. Cancellations must be received at least 2 weeks in advance. Simplify payment! We will invoice you after your visit (after confirming student numbers). Drivers, supervisors and teachers are free. Teachers are welcome to preview the exhibitions by presenting a valid Ontario Teachers card at the Admission Desk. *Rates include HST and are subject to change without notice. SCHOOL PROGRAMS

BOOK A TOURFees: Elementary and Secondary students $4.00.*The following are our two standard 1 hour themed tours that can be booked year round. A Field Guide with pre and post visit lessons is available for most educational tours.

WELLAND CANALS TOUR (GRADES 3-10)This tour outlines the development and growth of the Welland Canals, covering the geography of the Niagara Region, the growth of the City around the canal, and the people involved. Students will examine the voyage of the early explorers, the evolution of marine transportation, as well as the Canal’s impact on urban development. A viewing of the video “Welland Canals: Past and Present” is included.

FOLLOW THE NORTH STAR TOUR(GRADES 3-10)Trace the journey to freedom through a history of slavery and emancipation, racism and prejudice in this tour tied to our award-winning exhibit, “Follow the North Star”. Students will follow the journey of the Freedom Seekers, who sought refuge in Canada from slavery, as well as those in the area who helped the escaped slaves arriving in Niagara and the modern African-Canadian community in Niagara. Along with the guided tour of the Museum, groups have the option of viewing an excerpt of the video “Safe Harbor”. Teachers will receive our “Follow the North Star” Field Guide.

ORNAMENTING THE ORDINARY: CRAFTS OF SOUTH ASIA(GRADES 1-6)Available September 12, 2011 to December 30, 2011.Fee is $4.00/student.*Examine the rich array of visual imagery in everyday South Asian culture and the way in which South Asian artists transform functional objects into artistic forms, transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary. Through a variety of hands-on activities, artifacts and replicas, students can discover the artistic styles, craftsmanship and craft traditions of South Asia’s many culturally diverse regions, as well as create their own South-Asian inspired work of art.

CABIN FEVER: WINTER IN ST. CATHARINES(GRADES 1-6)Available November 21, 2011 to March 23, 2012.Fee is $4.00/student.*Explore the traditional homestead and pastimes to the recreational activities and winter sports along the Welland Canal. The activities provide students with the opportunity to apply their critical thinking and problem solving skills while learning the daily routines of the early settler era to the remarkable Blizzard of ’77.

CHILD’S PLAY: A CENTURY OF TOYS 1850’s – 1950’s(GRADES 1-6)Available January 23, 2012 to March 30, 2012.Fee is $4.00/student.*Between the 1850 and 1950, the toy industry was revolutionized by industrial modes of production and began to take some of the forms that we see in today’s toys. Through a variety of hands-on activities, artifacts and replicas, students can investigate a century of toys, games and childhood pastimes.

FAKES AND FORGERIES: YESTERDAY AND TODAY(GRADES 1-6)Available April 16, 2012 to August 24, 2012.Fee is $4.00/student.*Learn to spot the differences between fakes and real artifacts that run the gamut from historical specimens and cultural artifacts, to household items and designer name brands. Students can guess which objects are real and which are clever fakes and educate themselves about pirated computer software and counterfeit currency.

To extend your visit, here are free add-on options. Please allow an extra half hour.WELLAND CANALS CENTRE(UPPER AND LOWER LEVELS) (ALL GRADES)Students can investigate bridge and lock operations, samples of bulk cargo, ship models, as well as test their navigational skills through interactive computer terminals. A video entitled “Conquering Niagara” is also available. Ships’ schedules are unpredictable but we welcome classes to our viewing platform whenever the opportunity arises!

ONTARIO LACROSSE HALL OF FAME AND MUSEUM(ALL GRADES)Learn about the history of this native game by joining us in a guided tour of our National Summer Sport. For a great hands-on experience, don’t miss the Lacrosse practice cage! This is an excellent opportunity for students to extend their study of First Nations culture.

RENT AN EDUCATION KIT: MUSEUM IN A BOX!Bring the museum to your classroom. All kits encourage ‘hands-on’ learning and include primary and secondary sources, resource materials and suggested activities. Kit rental period is 12 days. For longer rentals, please enquire.

TRADITIONS AND CELEBRATIONS(GRADE 2: HERITAGE AND CITIZENSHIP)Kit rental fee is $25.00.*This kit focuses on cultural traditions and celebrations from around the world. It is packed with hands-on support materials such as books, games, and authentic musical instruments and costuming. Through exploration students will develop an appreciation of the cultures that enrich Canadian society.

EARLY SETTLERS IN UPPER CANADA(GRADE 3: HERITAGE AND CITIZENSHIP)Kit rental fee is $40.00.*This kit reflects all aspects of early settler life, including agriculture, spinning and weaving, toys and games, clothing, and the early settler home. Students can spin their own wool, explore toys, dress up and even cook just like the early settlers did! The hands-on artifacts and props allow students to compare their lives with that of early settlers.

MEDIEVAL TIMES(GRADE 4: HERITAGE AND CITIZENSHIP)Kit rental fee is $40.00.*This kit is packed with reproduction artifacts, including three medieval helmets and chain mail for students to try on! Students will deepen their understanding of the major features of daily life by examining clay marbles, medieval playing cards, coins, quill pens, brass stamps, clothing and much more!

EARLY CIVILIZATIONS(GRADE 5: HERITAGE AND CITIZENSHIP)Kit rental fee is $40.00.*This kit focuses on areas of life in Ancient Egypt and includes posters, games, hieroglyphic activities and research materials. Hands-on materials include papyrus, statues and a mancala board. Draw comparisons between Egypt, early Greece and Rome with the resource books and reproduction coins.

CITIZENSHIP AND GOVERNMENT(GRADE 5: CANADA AND WORLD CONNECTIONS)Kit rental fee is $25.00.*This kit brings Canadian citizenship and government to life! Students can participate in a mock election, draw caricatures of politicians, examine stamps and coins, and sing songs about Canadian politicians. A teacher’s guide is included with over 30 curriculum integrated lessons.

VIKINGS: AN INTRODUCTION TO EUROPEAN EXPLORERS(GRADE 6: HERITAGE AND CITIZENSHIP)Kit rental fee is $18.00.*This kit is an engaging way to introduce your students to early explorers and debunk popular myths about the Vikings. Students will discover the culture, exploration, and significance of Vikings to Canada, including their interactions with the First Nation peoples. Reproduction artifacts include a model Viking ship, rune stones, horn, clothing and more.

FIRST NATION PEOPLES OF NIAGARA(GRADE 6: HERITAGE AND CITIZENSHIP)Kit rental fee is $25.00.*This kit covers the history of the Attawandaron (Neutral), the Mississauga Nations and the modern Haudenasaunee (Iroquois) Six Nations Confederacy. Using hands-on props and artifacts including a cradle board, dream catchers, soap stone and carving tools, various furs, sweet grass and more, students will learn the main characteristics of First Nation cultures.

FOLLOW THE NORTH STAR(GRADES 4-8)Kit rental fee is $25.00.*This kit explores the journey of slaves from the United States to freedom in Canada. Resources include research materials, books, maps, audio-visual supports, primary historical documents and hands-on props such as a Harriet Tubman doll, drinking gourd and more. Students will discover the importance of Black History to St. Catharines!

WELLAND CANALS(GRADES 4-8)Kit rental fee is $18.00.*This kit introduces the development and growth of the Welland Canal, as well as the growth of the City around the canal and the people involved. It covers themes such as early settlers, marine transportation and urban development in St. Catharines as they relate to the four Welland Canals. Students can explore hands-on materials which include samples of cargo, marine knots, maps and ship models.

WAR, PEACE AND REMEMBRANCE RESOURCES (ALL GRADES)Kit rental fee is $40.00.*This kit is especially helpful for planning Remembrance Day activities or learning about war, peace and remembrance in Canada. Included are hands-on artifacts and military uniforms, posters, research and audio-visual materials, as well as a Veteran’s Affairs Canada curriculum support unit. Resources can be personalized according to your topic of study including WWI, WWII and the Holocaust, and children and war.
