ORMTC PRESIDENT’S REPORT AUGUST 2014

What a wintry month July was. Great for the farmers, and our water supplies, not so great for motorcycle touring. This is the first winter I can remember since I was a kid where every swamp and low lying area around Perth look like beautiful blue lakes. We had two great rides and a “Christmas in July” luncheon during the month. All were well attended, so things are looking on the up. I’ve been a member of this club nine years now and have noticed how our attendances ebb and flow and so not surprising we’re experiencing the same again. Shorter, non -overnighter rides seem to be more popular than the longer rides, as are Social rides, so there’s a message in that I’m sure. I will be away for the August meeting so wish Vice President Russell all the best with chairing his first meeting for the Club. See you all out there soon Safe and happy riding.

Editors Report

There’s something in the magazine from every Club event held in July. This starts with the minutes that you will all be eager to accept or take second dibs. The Club Run was a soggy state of affairs, followed up by the ORATS heading north, the Social Ride to Serpentine/Pinjarra and finally the Xmas in July meat feast hosted at the Narry. Keep those photos coming in and if you like reading articles, perhaps put pen to paper too. Enjoy Fred’s article; Wet as Shags. Still cold, but at least the days are getting longer. Ivan

JULY 2014 CLUB RUN REPORT

WET AS SHAGS Yes, that’s right, this was a wet one. Riders arrived in cloudy but clear weather to Macca’s Armadale at the allotted time, enjoyed a nice warm coffee and maybe a Bacon and Egg muffin or two before we grouped, riot acted and set out for a nice Sunday ride. Riders were Fred (Leader) with Kayley as pillion, Robin (TEC), EJ, Peter with Nancy as pillion, Russell, newcomer Wayne, and life member Hans. We headed south along SW Highway to Byford and then into Soldiers Road (luv that name) heading towards Mundijong. In the distance we could see black skies and sheet lightning. My thoughts turned to our new rider Wayne who turned up in the most meagre of attire for a winter run - jeans and a light leather jacket. Sure enough we eventually caught up with the black skies and a very heavy dump of rain. So concerned was I for Wayne I took a small detour off the main drag in Mundijong to find some shelter. We asked Wayne if he was OK and would he like us to stop, I could see he was already soaked through. Now here was a brave soldier, he insisted we continue on, it’s only water he said. The rain abated when we got to Del Park Road and it was quite pleasant through to Dwellingup where we stopped at the corner café for more coffee, and cake. The mood within our little group was definitely one of , “let’s just take our time here and relax, what’s the hurry”. Those of us with good wet weather gear were fine, others were starting to leak a little, and some were soaked through. Kayley complained her boots were leaking,

Page 7: ORMTC August 2014 newsletter

and it was then I noticed she’d worn her fashionable jean boots instead of Mum’s water proof riding boots which were made for the job. No sooner we ventured out of that warm and cosy café the rain started at us again. So it was off towards Nanga Brook Road and down into Waroona. Always a great ride that, even in the rain. And so it was for the rest of the day that we had rain then dry then rain. Ivan sent me a text to say he wasn’t coming “on account of the weather” – smart man that Ivan!

We travelled down to Yarloop then back northwards via back roads including EJ Highway where the trees are friendly. Get her to explain that one! We arrived wet and cold at Ravenswood Tavern at noon. We traded our booked table in the cool restaurant for something far more inviting in the lounge with a big circular wood fire. A good selection of meals for lunch are on offer at the Ravenswood. We had riders taking off boots, gloves, socks, neck warmers etc and placing them around the fire to dry. We also had a fine line up of helmets adjacent to rest rooms, I’m hoping photographer Pete sent one through of that. After a very pleasant gathering for lunch we were back on the bikes just in time for it to start raining again. We finished our ride on the corner of Kargotich and Thomas Roads from whence everyone headed off in all directions for a warm and dry home.

Xmas in July was organised by Fred and the rest of the

McMurray family. Thank you for setting up the decorations and making the

event a success.

Dear Family, Friends & ORATS members, My journey has begun! To date I have raised $550.00 but still need to reach my goal of $2500.00 which is all for Cancer Research. We need your help! So I have committed to raising $2,500 and riding over 200 km for The Sun super Ride to Conquer Cancer® benefiting the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research. I'll be honest, I wasn't 100% sure I could do it at first, but after much deliberation I have decided to just go for it, and what I've learned is that the only way to be successful is to start. So, I have begun my training and my fundraising! So I have kick started my donations by donating $100 to myself already with hope that everyone that receives this email can match me. I am determined to reach my $2500 fundraising goal and with your help I know I can reach it. I'd also like to ask another favour of all of you. Please forward my request for support to everyone you know - family, friends and colleagues. Thank you for cheering me on! Craig Davies Personal Donation Page
