Water Voles
Early evening is the best time to see a water vole as you walk along the banks of Ormesby Beck. They live in burrows along the river banks and eat the grasses and reeds in the beck. Water voles are very shy and when disturbed they usually jump into the water which makes a distinctive “plop” sound.
Orme the Viking
To celebrate the Viking history of Ormesby pupils from Berwick Hills Primary School, designed a sculpture of Orme the Viking and dragon seating to go beside the beck.
Orme is carrying a sword, shield and dagger and wearing a helmet and chainmail. They could be decorated with silver, copper and bronze to show how rich the owner was and are all very high status items. All free men were expected to own weapons. They were carried not just for battle but as a symbol of their owners status and wealth.
Ponds and ditches
These ponds, scrapes and ditches were created in 2012 as part of a joint project between Boro Becks and Living Waterways.
Once the ponds and plants become established we hope lots of animals will make this area their home. Dragon-flies, damselflies, pond skaters, frogs and toads all live in habitats like this.
They use the latest mobile phone technology to give people instant access to information. There are 6 points along the beck where you will find a smallsquare plaque with a black and white QR code.
These work like barcodes when scanned with a mobile phone, the phone will be directed to a website full of interesting facts about that area of Ormesby Beck.
Welcome to the Ormesby Beck Discovery Points. These are a new way to find out about Ormesby Beck.
Trees and Flowers
Lots of different flowers and plants can be seen on the banks of Ormesby Beck. Elder, oak, hawthorn and rowan trees are all useful, providing shade habitats and food for lots of birds and other animals. The wildflower meadows provide a perfect place to spot butterflies basking in the sun and feeding.
Junior Ormesby Beck Friendship Group
The group was set up in 2009 to work with local young people to help them get involved with the conservation of Ormesby Beck. They have helped plant trees, create homes for birds and bats and were involved in the production of these discovery points.
The Middlesbrough Meteorite
On March 14th, 1881, some railway workers witnessed the meteorite falling to earth at Pennyman's Siding, near where Roseberry Park hospital is now. This is one of only 13 confirmed meteorites ever to have landed in England.
