THE NAiviE OF OUR CITY - ORLANDO

For many years most citizens of Orlando have thought that our eity ''flas n8rr.ed for Orlando Reeves. But no one lmew for sure.

About six years ago, r-1rs. Richard P. Willis, one of the members of the Society and Head of the Local History and Genealogy Department of tr,e Orl3r.do FJ.blic Library, decided to see if she could find documcutA to prove or disprove the origin of the name of the city- 01·Jando.

During her research she had located records referring to Orlando Rees, but no references to the :'lOSt elusive Orlando Reeyes.

Recently Mrs. Willis' work has been getting some publicity which may help her in her research. Three women have written that they have ir.forrr.at ion about a Rees family. We hope that her detective \Wrk will soon end in definite proof of the origin of the name of the ·city of Orlando.

AUNT REBECCA'S STORY

:r.is article was given to the Society by !11rs. Minette Jugle, a f'Jr:r.er resident of Orlando. Mrs. Jugle does not knmv just who i'irste ti;.e story of her ancestor.

Grandwother Rebecca Cathers Fuller had a grandmother Rachael S::}iley, ;.:ho vias stolen by the IYldians and both she and her brother Robert were adopted by the.

:hey lived in a sparcely settled district. The father was called awqy to aid in quelling an Indian uprising, but no Indians were supposed to be near this settlement.

The oother sat by the window sewing, the baby sleeping by her side, and the two children, Rachael, age about 8 years, and Robert about 4 years, were playing nearby 1 when the Mother noticed the heads of Indians bobbing from behind tree trunks. She called Rachael to her, and told her the Indians vlere upon them, and that they would kill rwr (tile mother) and the baby, but that they would take Rachael and Robert away with them and adopt them into their tribe. "You take care of your little brother and keep him with you, and don't forget your name or that you are white, and if you ever see a white man, go to him and tell him your name and that you are 1vhi te." She gave t!-:e child her needle, thimble and scissors, and told her to hide them and keep them if she could. It all happened as the mother said the children were adopted and well treated except for one old squaw who was mean to her, and took her scissors which she had kept buried in a stump. :Finally, Rachael savl some white men and she ran to tte~, and they had her returned to her father. Her little brother Robert S::-dley grew up and was a Colonel in the War of the Revolution. He also fought in the Indian Wars.

F:s.• >n.Pl Smi 1 cy m::tr-ried a I-1r. Joseph Blake, and seems to be known as ::r:3. E:<::.C:"e. She lived to hi"'! a very old lady and always hated the India~s. She always called them "thngA dirty creatures''. I suppose she ln:e\·: jus<: hv>'l dirty they were. Her nuoh~nn, r~Ir. Blake, was killed in t~e ~~r of the Revolution.

A GIFT TO ORLANDO PUBIJIC LIBRARY

i·,r. and I:rs. James C. Staples have made a gift to the Genealogical Depart~ent of the Orlando Public Library of the first translation into modern Enrlish of the Domesday Book.

7his first edition is being published as a 35-volume set with a parallel text of the original Latin. The thirty-fifth volume will cover I~orthu:nberland and Durham counties, which v1ere not r:art of the Domesday Book, but surveyed in a similar manner 100 years later, thus making this set a :nore complete reference than the original book itself.

':he ·,;ork of publication is going on now. The first three volumes have been received and the remainder will be released at the rate of about 12 per year until completion in 1979. They will become a part of the collection of the Genealogical Department.

THE l3RmlS ING CORNEH

?'1.r"': of my "broHsing" \vas recently done by telephone. As a rasul t I rpccive1 incorrect information- this does not seem to be'the way to fi~~ ~a~e information.

: telephon~the University of Florida Library in Gainesville. After tE'i:•g transferred three times I finally got the department I had bee~ :oo~ina for - but not the information. I had asked for the departmer;.t ::Jl:iing any books on genealogy. A very nice young man apologized fer L.e tr<:msfers and the fact that the University Library did not hold many tacks of this type. The two sets he mentioned are also at the Or2..'lr.·-:o ?....tclic Library.

7his r~st Heekend (October 24th and 25t~four members of your Socie:y attended the Genealogical Workshop in Jacksonville. While there, I src~e to a lady from Gainesville, who told me that there is quite a bit ~;f gene3logical information in the University Library, but that it is net listed in this ~anner. As a matter offuct you must search all throl<t;h the card index for the particular state you are searching to locqte the cards for books on genealogy. There is a good reason for this - tl1e books are not used for genealogy at the University, but for history. This should serve as a reminder to all of us - don't just ask -go look for yourself.

Getting back to the Genealogical Workshop in Jacksonville, the foL<r ~~,e~:ters attending were Mrs. Parcus (Morean) Rankin, l\1rs. Edgar T. (:.:ar.y Vircinia) v/hite, fhss f1innie F. v/itham and Mrs. C. W. (Betty) I-iug:.cjGr'l. :ie thoroughly enjoyed the speakers .... Mrs. r•1ary Bondurant Warren, I:r. Jc{',n I. Coddington, i·:r. Gayle P. Peters and r.1rs. Velma D. Reaves.

:.rs. Reqves spoke on beginning genealogy and library research, while :·.rs. 'ti'lrren and i·:r. Cod0 ir.gton covered the earliest pioneers and the i::-,:;ric:t tLey :nade on the east coast, the Revolutionary and Loyalist group:.:> and cc~pleted their talks by covering many ideas that will help all those doing reseArch. ~r. Peters spoke on the Records that are now held in the H8lding Center of the National Archives in Atlanta.

':i:<e four of us feel that we not only gained much help in our own rese3rch, but also legrned a ~reat deal about hRving our own workshop.

Re~e~ber - the Newsletter staff still needs articles for our next issues. Je ~now that many of you have found much of interest during your ~eseq~8~, ~hether you find it in books or during your travels.

CREED

OUR LIVES are the gift of our many antecedents

OUR GOALS are to perpetuate their names and activities

OUR LABOR is to gather and preserve that left to us.

OUR LOVE to extend both backward and forward, so that

OUR CHILDREN rn~~ feel close to their folk and their land

OUR DUTY is to share all gathered informat~on, while

OUR HOPE is to interest others and to assist each member

"The lines are fe.11en unt:J me in pleasant places; yea 9 I

have a goodly h.eritage. 11 Psalms 16:6
