Collateral Damage

It is summer: the peasants toil vigorously in the fields,Carving the ground like an earthquake, harvesting every morsel it yields.Working from sunrise to sunset, bone-tired.Eagerly returning home at night, to devour all the food theyve acquired. They are hungry.Fall brings torrents of rain, and into misery the world transforms;Their crops are washed away like blood from guilty hands, collateral damage in this storm. They are hungry.Winter months are severe, freezing the ground. They sit, dejected, as their stomachs bellow for food, they hopelessly look around. They are hungry. With spring arrives fresh optimism, and news of war.Comment by Omar Khan: Their sons are sent to be slaughtered; the peasants are worked harder, fed less, taxed more.Battle-weary soldiers, more animal than men, march up to the farm. They demand food, one peasant refuses; ruthlessly they shoot him to raise alarm.Comment by Omar Khan: Comment by Katie Marr: Comment by Omar Khan: And they say, We are hungry.Comment by Omar Khan: Comment by Katie Marr: Comment by Katie Marr: Comment by Omar Khan: Comment by Omar Khan:
