Original ‘Schindler’s List’ Found during the Holocaust. This yellowed, 13-page document, which named the 801 men saved from the gas chambers, was quickly typed in the closing days of WWII. Leopold Pfefferberg (Jewish worker number 173 on the list) gave the list to novelist Thomas Keneally in 1980 to persuade him to write Schindler’s story. Curators were stunned to find it between the research notes and German newspaper clippings Keneally turned over to the library in 1996. Schindler and his list inspired Keneally’s award- winning novel and Steven Spielberg’s Oscar-winning 1993 film, Schindler’s List. Schindler risked his life to save more than 1,000 Jews from the Nazis by convincing them they were critical workers in his factory. This yellowed, 13-page document, which named the 801 men saved from the gas chambers, was quickly typed in the closing days of WWII.
