Online Mathematics Placement Exam The online mathematics placement exam is used to gauge your level of preparation for calculus. It consists of multiple-choice questions covering algebra and pre-calculus material. Your score on the online test is combined with data from your college admissions test scores (the math subsection of either the ACT or SAT if available) and your previous high school and college work to determine what mathematics course you should take. You will discuss your placement with your advisor when you meet with him/her during orientation. The Mathematics Placement Exam will become available on April 13, 2012 must be completed by June 21, 2012. Who is required to take the Online Math Placement Exam Transfer students in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts and the School of

Kinesiology are strongly encouraged to take the math placement exam if there is any possibility that you will ever take a U-M math course.

Transfer students in the School of Education (SOE) who will be continuing their studies in mathematics or who are seeking teacher certification for mathematics are required to take the math placement exam. SOE students who do not intend to take mathematics courses at Michigan are not required to take the placement exam.

Transfer students entering any of the Performing Arts Technology Programs (PAT) in the School of Music, Theatre & Dance MUST take the math exam. Other students in the School of Music, Theatre & Dance are not required to take the math placement.

Instructions Go to http://prep.math.lsa.umich.edu/placement/. Log in using your uniqname and password.

Online Spanish Placement Exam Results from the online Spanish exam are used to determine which course level is appropriate for your skills, since students have had different experiences learning Spanish. After taking the exam you will not see your results immediately, but will receive them when you arrive at orientation. If your score places you in the range in which you meet the LSA language requirement, you may be asked to meet with a representative of the Spanish Department at orientation to have your score validated. The exam will be available starting April 2, 2012 at 9:00 am on CTools. Who is required to take the tests? All students who have had Spanish in high school and beyond are required to take the exam if they are considering taking any Spanish classes at the University of Michigan (Fall 2012 or later). What if I have AP credit or IB credit? If you have received your AP/IB test scores already, our website: http://www.lsa.umich.edu/rll indicates the level at which you’re eligible to enroll. You can still take the Spanish Placement Exam to determine what course we would recommend; however, your AP/ IB placement could override your placement if it is higher. What if I change my mind once enrolled? If you decide not to take Spanish classes now and change your mind later, you will need to take a Spanish Placement Exam before registering for a Spanish class. Please note: students may not take the Spanish placement exam more than one time. Instructions Allow yourself approximately one hour to take the exam

Please cut/paste the following link into your web browser when you’re ready to take the

exam (http://tinyurl.com/umspanish11) or click here.

Log in using your uniqname and password. Then follow the Spanish placement exam instructions.

Students who need special assistance for the online Spanish exam should contact the LSA Testing Accommodation Center at [email protected] to make a request for extended time accommodations two (2) business days in advance of when you will take the online exam.

The CTools infrastructure is being upgraded this summer. As a result, CTools will be

unavailable from 12:01am June 30, 2012 until 11:59 pm July 1, 2012. During this time you will not be able access the CTools site to complete you’re online placement exam. Please

Preparing for Transfer Orientation Orientation will be a busy – and possibly overwhelming – day. In order to make the most out of your orientation experience, you should do the following things before coming to orientation:

1. Learn how to use Wolverine Access. Wolverine Access is the system that you will use to register for your classes. Your academic advisors will expect you to already be familiar with this system when you meet with them to register for courses. There are two online tutorials available to assist you in learning Wolverine Access. The first is located at: http://www.onsp.umich.edu/wolverine_access/onspwatutorial5.html. The second is located at: http://lsapeeradvising.wordpress.com/wolverine-access-tutorials/. These tutorials will introduce you to the services available through Wolverine Access, and they will prepare you for course selection and registration at Orientation.

2. Watch for e-mail messages from your academic advising school/college, and follow all instructions they may contain. Some schools and colleges send information and surveys ahead of time, and you will be expected to be familiar with the information and to have completed the surveys prior to attending orientation.

3. Take the Online Math Placement Exam (if applicable). Please refer to the “Math Placement Exam” section to determine if you are required by your academic school/college to take the math placement exam.

4. Determine whether you need to take a Language Placement Exam, as this will determine what time you need to arrive in Ann Arbor (see “Language Placement Exams on page 9).

5. Print out a Central Campus map from http://www.umich.edu/~info/mapsAndDirections.html. On this map, locate the Maynard Street Parking Structure, located at 324 Maynard Street. It is listed as VP (visitor parking) on the map. You should also locate the check-in location, Angell Hall, and your placement exam location.
