Introduction

The mayfly species ofthe Indian subregion of the Oriental region was last catalogued by Hubbard and Peters (1978). The Indian subregion is defined herein, after Hubbard & Peters (1978) to include the areas contained within the Republic of India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Myanmar. Lack of a recent account of the Ephemeroptera of the Indian subregion have made tracking of the mayfly fauna and its updated classification particularly difficult, the checklist provided herein is intended for this purpose.

The checklist below is a consecutively numbered accounting of all recognized species recorded from the Indian subregion, it is formatted alphabetically by genus and species names with details of localities under families and subfamilies phylogenetically arranged following McCafferty ( 1991 ), with modifications from McCafferty and Wang (2000). Globally, about 3000 species in 400 genera and 42 families are currently known. Of these, 390 species in 84 genera and 20 families occur in the Oriental region. About 49% ofthe genera (41 genera) is endemic to the region (Barber-James et al. 2008). The fauna of the Indian subregion is represented by four suborders, fifteen families, sixty genera and 204 species. Species rich families are Leptophlebiidae (14 genera, 28 species), Ephemeriidae (4 genera, 25 species), Heptagaeniidae (10 genera, 37 species) and Baetidae (13 genera, 69 species). Five families (Leptophlebiidae, Ephemeriidae, Caenidae, Heptagaeniidae and Baetidae) are with more than 10 species. Species rich genera with more than ten species each are Ephemera (Ephemeriidae ), Ecdyonurus (Heptagaeniidae ), Baetis and Cloeon (Baetidae ). Family wise diversity is summarized in Table 1.

Note: All the species earler assigned to Labiobaetis were assigned to Pseudocloeon (Lugo-Ortiz, McCafferty & Waltz, 1999). However, Pseudocloeon Kalpalek, 1905 is knoWn only from imagos and larval stages are unknown. Moreover, the combination of imaginal characters by which Kalpalek described Pseudocloeon is now known to occur in many lineages of Baetidae, rendering the species of Pseudocloeon polyphyletic. Till the larval and imaginal correspondence is known, the concept of Pseudocloeon will remain uncertain. Waltz & McCafferty (1985 and 1987) suggested restricting the concept of Pseudocloeon to the type species

Page 16: Orientallnsects, Vol. 43:315-339, 2009

330 Oriental Insects Vol. 43

P.kraepelini. However, it will be premature to assign species either to Pseudocloeon or to Labiobaetis without a global revision (Gattolliat, 2001). Following a precautionary approach after Waltz & McCafferty (1985 and 1987) and (Gattolliat, 2001 ), we prefer to the provisionally assign species earlier assigned to Labiobaetis or Psuedocloeon to Labiobaetis.
