1 CHEM 222 Organic Chemistry Fall 2012 Prof. Shengping Zheng and Prof. Wayne Harding Email: [email protected] and [email protected] Phone: 212-396-6322 (Zheng) and 212-772-5359 (Harding) Lecture times and location: Tuesday & Friday 12:10-2:00 pm, HW 615 Office hours: Tuesday & Friday 11 am-12 pm and by appointment. Office: HN 1305a (Zheng) and HN 1307a (Harding) Brief course description: A first semester course for students needing a full year of organic chemistry. Structure, bonding, stereochemistry, reactions, mechanisms and spectroscopy of organic compounds will be discussed. Chapters 1-6 will be taught by Prof. Zheng and Chapters 7-12 will be taught by Prof. Harding. Course credits: 4 Pre-requisite: Chem 104 or equivalent. It is suggested that you review your general chemistry notes, especially topics on periodic trends, atomic structure and acids and bases at the beginning of the course. Textbook: Organic Chemistry (Solomons, 10 th ed.). Chapters 1-12 will be covered for the course. Grading/Exams: There will be four (4) hourly exams (100 points each). All exams are mandatory. If you miss an hourly exam, you must present verifiable proof of the reason for missing the exam. Otherwise, there will be NO make-up exam. Make-up exams are generally much harder. Projected grade lines: A, B, C grades are further divided into +/- subgrades. The actual grade line may be adjusted slightly higher or lower depending on the difficulty of exams. A: 85% (total 340 pts) or above B: 70-85 % (total 280-340 pts) C: 60-70 % (total 240-280 pts) D: 50-60% (total 200-240 pts) F: below 50% (below 200 pts) Exam dates: Hour exam 1: September 21 (Chapters 1-3) Hour exam 2: October 19 (Chapters 4-6) Hour exam 3: November 13 (Chapters 7-9) Hour exam 4: December (Chapters 10-12) No Class: September 18 (Tuesday) and September 25 (Tuesday). Academic dishonesty: If any form of academic dishonesty is found, involved student(s) will be automatically given F with a note stating “Failed, due to academic dishonesty” on their transcripts. In addition, involved student(s) will be subjected to disciplinary actions according to the school guideline. Policy on Incomplete grade: Incomplete (IN) grade would be given if a student has a reasonable chance of passing the course but cannot complete it because of a valid reason. In order to be considered for the IN grade, students need to present a verifiable proof. Policy on CR/NC grade: The CR/NC request will not be accepted once final exam starts. Recitation: Enrollment in a recitation section is mandatory. Recitation section will cover problem-solving techniques in organic chemistry. Molecular Model: Very helpful. You can buy it from Kawamura (HN 1312).

AccessABILITY: ”In compliance with the American Disability Act of 1990 (ADA) and with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Hunter College is committed to ensuring educational parity and accommodations for all students with documented disabilities and/or medical conditions. It is recommended that all students with documented disabilities (Emotional, Medical, Physical and/ or Learning) consult the Office of AccessABILITY located in Room E1124 to secure necessary academic accommodations. For further information and assistance please call (212- 772- 4857)/TTY (212- 650- 3230).” Suggestions for Studying Organic Chemistry:

1. Read the material in the book before the lecture. Knowing what to expect and what is in the book, you can take fewer notes and spend more time listening and understanding the lecture.

2. After the lecture, review you notes and the book, and do the in-chapter problems. Also, read the material for the next lecture.

3. If you are confused about something, visit your instructor during office hours immediately, before you fall behind. Bring your attempted solutions to problems with you to show your instructor where you are having trouble.

4. To study for the exam, begin by reviewing each chapter and your notes, then concentrate on the end-of-chapter problems.
