2nd SEEC Chemotherapy and Infection 2011

Belgrade (Beograd) is the capital of Serbia, and has a population of around 1.6 million. It is situated in South-Eastern Europe, on the Balkan Peninsula, at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. It is one of the oldest cities in Europe and has, since ancient times, been a connecting point between the East and West, as well as a land of beautiful scenery and hospitable people. Belgrade is the capital of Serbian culture, education, science and economy. As a result of its tumultuous history, Belgrade has for centuries been home to many nationalities, with Serbs of the Orthodox Christian religion making up the majority of the population (90%). The official language is Serbian, while visitors from abroad can use English to communicate.

Since the establishment of the Yugoslav Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (JUAH), we have made an effort within local and regional boundaries, to provide the latest information and exchange of experiences in different fields of interest, for experts dealing with diagnostic and therapeutic problems in infectious diseases.

The success of the 1st South East European Conference of Chemotherapy and Infection, focusing on regional problems in the field of chemotherapy and infections has provided an opportunity for organise this second meeting. The conference provides a unique opportunity for participants to interact, learn and impart knowledge in the areas of antimicrobial chemotherapy and infectious diseases which play such an important role in the world of medicine around our globe.

The necessity for conferences such as the South East European Conference of Chemotherapy and Infection is obvious, considering the recent developments in microbiology, infectious disease and oncology. We are faced with changes in habitual interactions between humans and microbes, including possible pandemics of respiratory infections and the emergence of new infections. Through the world, including our region, ancient and well-known infectious diseases are re-emerging, and the problem of antimicrobial resistance is still evolving. Also the problem of nosocomial infections and the rising rate of immuno - suppression remain present. As physicians, we are obligated to improve our knowledge and attempt to alter these trends through discussions, exchange of opinions and learning.

The Second South East European Conference of Chemotherapy and Infection will provide a series of expert lectures on the latest scientific discoveries, new trends and problems in public health and recent advances in clinical practice. Therefore, the conference will have an important impact on all medical workers who care for patients with infections and cancer and who are in need of antimicrobial therapy.

We welcome you all and wish you a fruitful conference and an enjoyable stay in Belgrade.
