Basic Units of measurement

CONCEPTS

Comparisons can be easily understood if they are represented in a table.

Moz: Where else are tables used?Tejas: My brother lists out things he has to memorize as a table or a list and puts it up on the door. Moz: That is a good idea! Jyoti: My cousin made a comparison chart for metric system. That way she says we can easily understand and also remember what we learn.

Moz: The file on computer is called soft copy of your document. And the printout of the document is called a hard copy of the document. Jyoti: Are all files called soft copies?Moz: Yes. Whatever is saved on the computer is a soft copy.

Moz: Where is your document saved?Tejas: In a file on the computer. Then I will take a printout.

InfoDocuments, images, etc., saved on a computer as a file is called a soft copy. Printout of these files is called a hard copy.

Tejas: I have seen people saying “I will take a copy on my pen drive or a CD”. So then the copy on pen drive or CD is also a soft copy.

Moz: Correct.

Info

A pen drive and a CD are called removable storage devices. You can carry them anywhere and use the soft copy of the work copied on these devices, on another computer.

Tejas: We can use what we have learnt today to prepare projects of other subjects.Jyoti: We can prepare lists, posters, charts, story writing, and much more.Tejas and Jyoti: Thanks Moz for teaching us so much about the computers.

Moz: I too enjoyed your company and have learned the exercises, yoga asanas. I have to now go to Anandavan. Do all the projects that I have prepared and have fun using the computers. See you next year. Chin Chinaki...

CONCEPTS

Any work saved on the computer is called a soft copy. Soft copy can also be saved on storage devices like CD and pen drive. A hard copy is a print out of the file that is saved on a computer.

Mines:4. Mines is a puzzle game where you locate mines floating in an ocean. Clicking on a square reveals what is in it, empty ocean or a mine. If you uncover an empty square, you survive and get to try again. If you find an empty piece of ocean a number is printed there telling you how many mines are in the adjacent squares. Once you find a few clear squares you can start to deduce which squares have mines in them. To mark a square as having a mine, right-click on it to place a flag there. If you click on a square with a number and you have placed precisely that number of flags on adjacent squares then the remaining squares are revealed. If you do not mark the mines correctly then an explosion will occur and the game is over.

Teacher’sCornerThe purpose of this lesson is to familiarize children with multiple ways of representing information, such as a list, table and picture.

Begin the class by asking students to observe the index of their textbooks. Ask them what is the information presented and why is it required? They might say that ‘the index tells us about topics that we will study. Page number each chapter and so on. Now present the information in the index as a paragraph [the teacher can do this on the computer and show the printout of the same to the students]. Ask the students which form do they prefer – paragraph or list to know the details about topics covered in the textbook. Question them on how they write an essay and most of them will say, that they write a paragraph. Explain that depending on what information you want to share with others, sometimes a list is preferred, while sometimes a paragraph is required. Demonstrate how to create a list on a computer.

Allow students to enact the first part of the lesson describing creation of the list in the class with appropriate interruptions to explain the relevant concepts.

Inform the students that sometimes the information is more clearly shown in a table. Refer their class time table to explain this. Teach them what is a row, a column and a cell. Ask them to mention some instances where they have observed information presented in tables. Demonstrate how to draw a table using the computer. Teach them how to add a new row or column to the existing table.

Allow students to read the skill boxes to understand how to create the table and tell the steps aloud while they observe you add a new row or column and enter the information.

Tell the students that they can also add pictures to the list or table they create. Demonstrate this to the students.

Get a print of the list and table prepared in the class and explain the concept of hard copy and sof copy. Emphasize that they can actually touch the hard copy while the soft copy is always seen through the medium of technology.

Summarize the lesson and give the students appropriate activities to practice preparation of lists and tables. Emphasize that they need to understand where a paragraph, a list or table is appropriate to present the information clearly to others.
