11th INTERNATIONAL DIABETES CAMPING ANDYOUTH SERVICES CONFERENCE

ADA will sponsor the 11th International Diabetes Campingand Youth Services Conference for professionals who staff di-abetes resident and day camps at the Oglebay Resort inWheeling, West Virginia, 28-31 October 1988. Located 50miles outside Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Oglebay is one of thelargest municipal facilities in the U.S. Golf, swimming, tennis,and horseback riding are among its outstanding features. Theprimary objective of the 3'/2-day conference is to present newideas about areas of concern to camp professionals. AMERICAN DIABETES ASSOCIATION RESEARCHGRANTS AND AWARDS FOR 1 9 8 8 - 8 9

Medical Student Research Fellowship Program. Funds, upto $25,000/yr for 5 years, are awarded to accredited U.S.medical schools to support the training of a minimum of 5medical students/year. Participating students must be U.S. cit-izens or permanent residents in good standing in an accreditedU.S. medical school and must have completed at least 1 yearof medical school. Application deadline is 76 September 1988for 1 January 1989 funding.

Mentor-Based Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. Awards inthe amount of $30,000/yr for 3 years are given to support apostdoctoral fellow working with an established diabetes in-vestigator. The investigator must be a U.S. citizen or perma-nent resident and hold an appointment at a U.S. researchinstitution. The fellow must have an MD or PhD degree, nomore than 3 years of postdoctoral research experience, andcannot serve an internship or residency during the award pe-riod. Application deadline is 14 October 1988 for 1 July 1989funding.

Research and Development Awards. These awards providea maximum of $65,000/yr for 3 years to support young in-vestigators with 2-5 years of postdoctoral research experi-ence. The funds are to be divided between salary (restrictedto a maximum of $40,000/yr) and other grant support (re-stricted to a maximum of $35,000/yr). Applicants must beU.S. citizens or permanent residents and hold independentfaculty positions at U.S. university-affiliated institutions. Ap-plication deadlines are 5 August 1988 for 1 January 1989 fund-ing and 3 February 1989 for 1 July 1989 funding.

Feasibility Crants. These grants provide up to $40,000/yrfor 2 years for new and innovative diabetes research. Thefunds are to be used for equipment, supplies, and salary fortechnical assistance. Established diabetes investigators mustpropose marked departures from current research. Investiga-tors in other fields are encouraged to apply their expertise todiabetes research. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or per-manent residents and be members of U.S. university-affiliatedinstitutions. Application deadlines are 5 August 1988 for 1January 1989 funding and 3 February 1989 for 1 July 1989funding.

Lions Clubs International Clinical Research Program in Di-abetic Eye Disease. This program supports clinical or appliedresearch in diabetic retinopathy in the U.S. and abroad. Awardsup to $40,000/yr for 2 years will be given to support newtreatment regimens, epidemiology, and translation research.In addition, training grants and grants for equipment will beconsidered. Application deadline is 3 February 1989 for 1 July1989 funding.

Clinical Research Grant Program. Grants of up to $50,000/yr are provided for 3 years for studies that directly involvehumans. In vitro research on human blood or tissue samples
