Chair’s Message

Dear Delegates of ThinFilms2014, friends old and new, ladies and gentlemen: A warm welcome to a very warm Chongqing, the city of mountains! Yes, Chongqing is warm in summer, very warm as a matter fact, just like the heart of its people. Chongqing people have been here for a few thousand years, while we are here for only 3 days. I trust this is okay to experience the famous “stove” of China at least once in a life time. I truly believe many will love Chongqing and its people and thus come back again and again. ThinFilms2014 is the 7th biennial International Conference on

Technological Advances of Thin Films & Surface Coatings. Started in 2002, this conference series provides a platform for knowledge exchange and interaction for researchers and engineers from industry, research laboratories and academia. Just like the previous 6 editions of the ThinFilms conferences, ThinFilms2014 will again bring together state-of-the-art developments on all aspects related to the processing, characterization and applications of thin films and surface coatings. With some adjustment, again, this year we have 12 symposia as detailed below (the respective symposium Chairs are indicated in parenthesis): 1. Biological coatings (Kui CHENG & Jan CIZEK ); 2. Coatings for clean energy (Joe HSIEH & Lidong SUN); 3. Coatings towards industrial applications (Yanwen ZHOU & Peter KELLY); 4. Electrochemistry of thin films (Erjia LIU & San Ping JIANG); 5. Functional ceramic thin films (Pei-Chen SU & Wonyoung LEE); 6. Mechanical properties of thin Films (Zhong CHEN & Vicky CHEN); 7. Nanostructured and nanocomposite films and coatings (Sam ZHANG & Jyh-Ming TING); 8. Optoelectronic & dielectric thin films (Guenther BENSTETTER & Dongping LIU); 9. Oxide thin film, nano- and heterostructures (Gregory GOH & Sanjay MATHUR); 10. Organic/polymer thin films (Lin LI & Masayuki YAMAGUCHI); 11. Photocatalysis and self-cleaning coatings (Guojun QI); 12. Smart materials and films (Richard FU & Yan LI). Aside from our traditional symposia, a special feature of this edition is the addition of the new “CIA” symposium Coatings towards industrial applications organized by Yanwen ZHOU & Peter KELLY, and Functional ceramic thin films symposium organized by Pei-Chen SU & Wonyoung LEE as well as the polymer thin films symposium organized by Lin LI & Masayuki YAMAGUCHI. Yanwen, Peter, Pei-chen, Wongyoung, Lin Li and Masayuki are all new faces in our symposium chair list. Also new as symposium co-chairs are Jan, Lidong, San Ping, Vicky, and Li Yan. I’d like to welcome them all on board the organizing committee and thank them for their effort and contributions in bringing the respective symposia into place. This year our conference comes to Chongqing. This is the 2nd time the conference is held in China. The local organizing committee, chaired by Prof Liu Qing, Vice President of Chongqing University, and Prof Huang Jiamu, Vice Dean of School of Materials Science and Engineering, has done a great job getting all things organized locally. Members of the Local Organizing Committee are Xin Yunchang, Huang Tianlin, Wang Jinxing, SunDeen, Zhang Yuxin, Li Xinlu and Zeng Wen. I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank all industrial sponsors and exhibitors for their generous support and live demonstration of their thin films and coatings related product that should make the conference more lively and interesting. Year 2014 also marks the 5th anniversary of the founding of the Thin Films Society. Although the Society was only officially established in 2009, it was the de facto organizer of the Thin Films conference series since ThinFilms2002. This morning we have five plenary keynotes: Prof. Wenxin Tang of Chongqing University on Trend in Low-energy electron microscopy and its applications on thin film surfaces; Prof. EH Yang of Stevens Institute of Technology on Graphene and CNT Architectures - Fundamentals and Device Applications; Professor K.A. KHOR of Nanyang Technological University on Global research and international collaboration trends in thin films and surface coatings technology analysed with bibliometrics tools, Professor Allan Matthews of The University of Sheffield on Engineering Surfaces by Effective Coating Design to Meet Application Needs and Prof. Daniel Chua of National University of Singapore on Carbon-based Materials: State-of-art 1D, 2D and 3D. Then we have 6 breakout room oral presentations and one whole afternoon dedicated for poster presentation to cover a total of around 550 papers from 30 over countries/regions of the globe. Though we will have 3 busy days ahead, don’t forget to enjoy your stay in Chongqing especially at night when it is much cooler while enjoying the conference in the comfortable hotel during the day.

Local Chair’s Message

Dear friends, ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Chongqing and ThinFilms2014. Chongqing is a port city with the largest municipal area and population in China. It is situated in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers in southwest China. Since its founding 3,000 years ago, Chongqing has been called Jiangzhou, Yuzhou, and Gongzhou, before getting its present name nearly 800 years ago. Perched beside the Yangtze, the "Golden River," Chongqing symbolizes Yangtze River civilizations and is the cradle of Bayu culture. Today, Chongqing is a modern city, China's fourth municipality after Beijing, Shanghai, and Tianjin. The focal point of the unique Yangtze Three Gorges Dam, Chongqing is a tourist attraction as well as a commercial city.

The local organizer, Chongqing university founded in 1929, had become a national comprehensive university consisting of six colleges in liberal arts, science, engineering, law science and medical science early in 1940s. A large number of famous scholars such as Li Siguang, Ma Yinchu, He Lu, etc., dedicated to the establishment of a solid academic foundation. In 1952, the nationwide restructuring of higher education turned Chongqing University into an engineering-orientated multi-disciplinary university under the State Ministry of Education. Chongqing University merged with Chongqing Construction Engineering University in 2000, forming a new Chongqing University. At present, She is a key national university in China, directly under the State Ministry of Education. Chongqing University runs 28 colleges and has a total enrollment of about 50,000 students. Here, as a vice president of this university and the local chair, I would like to thank all of you to Chongqing and the ThinFilms2014.

It is an honor and a chance for Chongqing University to collaborate with Thin Film Society and Prof. Sam Zhang to organize ThinFilms2014. This is the 7th biennial International Conference on Technological Advances of Thin Films & Surface Coatings. This conference series provides a knowledge exchange and interactive platform for researchers and engineers from industry, research laboratories and academia. ThinFilms2014 will again bring together state-of-the-art developments on all aspects related to the processing, characterization and applications of thin films and surface coatings. I am pretty sure that we will have a very successful conference. I also hope all of you will enjoy your stay in Chongqing as well. Thank you!
