Thegrowingactivity andprogress inorganic andprintable electronics, togetherwith the need foron-chip integrable and inexpensivedetecting sys-tems, have prompted the development of easilyprocessableorganicfield-effecttransistor(OFET)-and light-emitting diode (OLED)-based sensors,photodetectors,andbioelectronicdevices.Solutionoreasilyprocessabletwo-dimensionalmetaloxides,carbon-based,andhybridorganic/inorganic2Dand3Dmaterialshaveprovenusefulasactivelayersinchemical andbiological transducers.Novel tech-nologicalapproaches thatallow the integrationoffunctionalbio-receptors intodevicestructuresarealsocriticallyimportanttoendowsuchdeviceswithrecognition capabilities. Fast andeven simultane-ousdetectionofmultiple analytesutilizingmicro/nano array systemswill open aplethoraof novelapplications in key areas such as clinical analysis,environmentmonitoring,foodandbeveragesafety,andhomelandsecurity.Theassessmentoftheanalyt-icalperformancelevelofsensingdevicesisstrategicforachievingon-chipreliablequantitativeanalysis.Continued research anddevelopment efforts areneeded to further improve sensors’ performancelevelandlowcostmanufacturability.
