CHORAL INTROIT Hail, Gladdening Light Wood

PRAYER FOR THE NEW PIPE ORGAN AND START OF A NEW ACADEMIC YEAR O Lord God Almighty, whose glory cherubim and seraphim and all the hosts of heaven with ceaseless voice proclaim: Hear and accept, we humbly beseech thee, the praise of thy Church below; and most particularly the praise that this pipe organ will sound forth this day and for years to come. Pour down upon this thy Chapel such a spirit of faith, reverence and joy as shall lift both hymns and lives unto thee; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Please stand. ENTRANCE HYMN 436 (found in the green New English Hymnal)

PRECES Clucas (sung by the Chaplain and Choir)

O Lord, open thou our lips. And our mouth shall show forth thy praise. O God, make speed to save us. O Lord, make haste to help us. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Praise ye the Lord. The Lord's Name be praised.

Please be seated. PSALM 150 (sung by the Choir in Anglican Chant)

THE FIRST LESSON Isaiah 25.1-9

Please stand while the Choir sing the canticle. MAGNIFICAT (SONG OF MARY) Noble in B minor

My soul doth magnify the Lord: and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

For he hath regarded: the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth: all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me: and holy is his Name.

Page 3: Organ Dedication Evensong Final

And his mercy is on them that fear him: throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm:

he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat:

and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things:

and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel: as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed, for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Please be seated. THE SECOND LESSON Philippians 4.1-9

Please stand. NUNC DIMITTIS (SONG OF SIMEON) Noble in B minor

Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace: according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen: thy salvation Which thou hast prepared: before the face of all people. To be a light to lighten the Gentiles:

and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

THE APOSTLES’ CREED (said together)

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth;

And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,

born of the Virgin Mary: suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried.

He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven,

and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

Page 4: Organ Dedication Evensong Final

I believe in the Holy Ghost: the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints: the forgiveness of sins: the resurrection of the body, and the Life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS (sung by the Chaplain and Choir)

The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray.

Please kneel or be seated.

Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us.

THE LORD’S PRAYER (said by all)

Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

THE SUFFRAGES Clucas (sung by the Chaplain and Choir)

O Lord, shew thy mercy upon us. And grant us thy salvation. O Lord, save the Queen. And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee. Endue thy Ministers with righteousness. And make thy chosen people joyful. O Lord, save thy people. And bless thine inheritance. Give peace in our time, O Lord. Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God. O God, make clean our hearts within us. And take not thy Holy Spirit from us.

COLLECT OF THE DAY

COLLECT FOR PEACE O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed; Give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give; that both our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee, we being defended from the fear of our enemies, may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

COLLECT FOR AID AGAINST ALL PERILS Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Dedication and Blessing of the Tickell Pipe Organ

Please remain standing. THE PRESENTATION

Representatives of Keble College Chapel stand before the Archbishop. The Archbishop is addressed

Robin, Bishop in the Church of God, on behalf of the people of Keble College Chapel, we present this pipe organ for dedication and blessing. The work of human hands and the gift of the people of this College, it is given to the greater glory of God.

The Archbishop begins with this Exhortation

My brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus: Forasmuch as God has put into our hearts to build this pipe organ as an aid to the worship of him in this holy place, it is right that we should now dedicate it to him and set it apart to the holy use for which it is designed.

These Sentences are then said by the Archbishop and the congregation

V. O Father of all who art wisdom and beauty and goodness, O Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal Son made known in human flesh, O Holy Spirit, ever striving to bring into unity all that is broken and disfigured:

R. We praise thee, O God.

V. For the beauty of creation, for the richness of life in countless forms, for all that sustains our lives:

R. We praise thee, O God.

V. Because thou hast made us in thine own image, and called us to share in the work of creating, bringing the gifts of reason, skill, and talent to the service of others:

R. We praise thee, O God.

V. For this pipe organ that will sound forth in beauty and glory, humbling the heart before the eternal mysteries and lifting the soul to abiding joy:

R. We praise thee, O God.

V. For inspiring people to offer praise in music and song and to go forth from this place with high resolve to do God’s will:

R. We praise thee, O God.

Page 7: Organ Dedication Evensong Final

V. For those who have given of their means so that our worship might be a more perfect offering for thy glory:

R. We praise thee, O God.

V. And as we dedicate this pipe organ, that it may kindle the flame of devotion, comfort the sorrowful, cheer the faint-hearted, bring purity and peace into our hearts, and lead all who hear it in the way of eternal life:

R. We praise thee, O God.

The Archbishop says

Let us pray.

O Lord, before whose throne trumpets sound, and saints and angels sing the songs of Moses and the Lamb: we thank thee that thou hast so made us that by music our hearts can be lifted up unto thee. Accept this pipe organ which we dedicate to thee, that with the voice of music we may proclaim thy praise. Grant that thy people in this place and all who shall enjoy the benefit of this good work, may serve thee with gladness and show forth thy praise in triumphant songs. Let thy glory fill this place, and thy Spirit so dwell in the hearts of thy people, that they shall sing your praise in spirit and in truth, joining the heavenly chorus who sing the eternal song of triumph.

And now, bless this organ, we pray thee, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, that it may be set apart and consecrated for the praise of thee: these things we ask in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with thee, O Father, and the Holy Spirit, praise is given for ever and ever. Amen.

The organ sounds and all join in singing the following hymn. During the singing of the hymn, the Chaplain escorts the Archbishop to the centre of the Chancel from which he censes the newly-blessed pipe organ.
