Windows XP Support FAQ

Common questions about Windows XP support

Microsoft has announced that it will end support, including critical security patches, for Windows XP in April 8, 2014. Due to

the increased risk that this creates, Colonial Life will continue to provide limited support for laptops with Windows XP until Au-

gust 1, 2014. As such, you should start preparing for this transition soon.

What should I do with my old laptop?

Prior to August 1, you should backup all of your personal data and then run the Factory Recovery CD that came with your lap-

top. For some backup tips, please see the article on Propr here.

What if I can’t find my Factory Recovery CD?

We understand that that it may have been years since you’ve seen that disc. We’ve got your back. Just shoot us an email to recov-

[email protected] with the model number, serial number, along with a physical mailing address and we’ll get one mailed out to you.

What happens when I run the Factory Recovery CD?

The Factory Recovery CD will restore your laptop to the way it was when it left the factory. It will not have any of the programs that you have

installed now. All of your personal data and documents will be gone. It will not be encrypted or have any Colonial Life software installed.

That is why we stress the importance of backing up your data before you run the recovery CD.

Will I be able to use Harmony® on the Go with this or any other Windows XP computer?

It is not recommended to use the device on a computer that was not certified for Windows 7 or Windows 8. There are potential driver com-

patibility issues that we can’t foresee. In addition, the processor and amount of RAM on older machines would provide less than desirable

performance.

What options do I have to continue enrolling for Colonial Life?

Here are some potential options (in no particular order):

After restoring your Windows XP laptop, you will still be able to use it for access to Propr and Harmony Online. Note that as many

websites are upgraded, they will no longer support IE8.

If you have/purchase a modern laptop or tablet, you can enroll online now.

If you have/purchase a personal Windows 7 or Windows 8 laptop, you will be able to use Harmony® on the Go for offline enroll-

ments when it is released this summer.

You can start a new lease with Rush Computer Rentals.

You can rent a laptop from Rush Computer Rentals.

What will happen to my laptop after August 1st?

If you do not restore it back to its factory state by using the Factory Recovery CD, Colonial Life will take actions to disable it. We strongly

recommend that you backup all of your personal data and then run the recovery CD.

If you have additional questions, contact Enrollment Solutions at 1.800.438.6423 (Option 2 and 5).
