Tranquil. There can hardly be a better word to describe Hallagården. This old manor house, once home to an iron magnate, is part of the Lekhyttan idyll at the foot of the Kilsbergen uplands. The buildings, in “Swedish red”, house a café, shop and exhibitions. The coffee and pastries are gloriously fresh. Tempted? Then also try Johan’s home-made sheep’s cheese. From Birger’s time. At its height, Riseberga Kloster, the Cistercian convent outside Fjugesta, owned 240 properties in six provinces. It was founded in the 12th century when Birger Brosa, the country’s highest public offi cer, donated a number of large estates to the nuns in Riseberga. Unfortunately, King Gustav Vasa put a stop to their activities in 1546 and the buildings were left to fall into decay. Today, parts of the original western church wall remain. However, the entire convent area has been renovated. Close by, there is a chapel and an impressive amphitheatre with seats for over 1,200 spectators. On a warm summer evening, what better than a guided tour with fascinating stories from the convent’s heydays?

Glorious past. Today, all is peaceful in the tiny community between Hallsberg and Kumla. Yet, 150 years ago, Sannahed was one of Sweden’s largest military camps and training grounds. Let the faithfully restored and stately offi cers’ mess take you back to the glory days. Visit the military museum and the home of an offi cer in the Hussars. The latter paints an intimate picture of life in the 19th century.

Living history. Kvarngården in Mullhyttan is a piece of living history. The old village mill, which is part of the attraction, has been in use since the 18th century. Its 2.5 metre waterwheel grinds ecologically grown wheat and rye. You can buy the fl our from the tiny shop. Exhibitions, a café and shows also attract visitors throughout the summer.

We landed in a medieval market!

Varied. Örebro county museum has everything from Bronze Age treasures to the fi rst go-kart of Formula 1 ace, Ronnie Peterson [17]. See the costumes, jewellery and weapons in the Treasure chamber. Feel the repose amongst the beautiful objects in the Church hall. Encounter Örebro’s greatest sportspeople at the Sports museum. Wander through farming communities from the Stone Age to the present day. Peep inside old dwellings, mint your own “gold coin”, admire the dolls house from one of the mansions and write your own name in runes. A large part of the museum is devoted to art. There are fi ve main themes – nature, man, abstract art, history and the home. Have a good lunch at the museum’s restaurant and then continue on to enjoy the temporary exhibitions!

Shoe times. At the Shoe industry museum in Kumla, time has stood still! One of the fl oors has been left exactly the same as on the day the shoe factory closed down. However, the museum is carrying traditions onward. The hand-made shoes now produced here can be bought in the shop. Exhibitions and authentic settings tell of the times when the Närke region was the capital of the Swedish shoe industry. Here, you can also take a trip back through the nostal-gia of shoe fashions. We guarantee the odd smile or two! Kumla is still a shoe town. The Age factory produces the famous Arbesko range and the Ymer shoe factory is responsible for Kavat, the highly popular children’s shoes [37].

We landed in a

Karin and Carl Larsson in Hallsberg. She lived in the shadow of her husband, Carl, one of Sweden’s greatest ever artists. However, had Karin Larsson lived today, she would certainly have been one of our most noted designers. Karin’s elegant furniture and beautiful textiles put her way ahead of her time. Her ideas have inspired many modern designers, not least those of IKEA. Several of Karin’s works, both furniture and paintings, are on show at her parents’ home, Bergööska huset. There is also an exhibition about her family. The main hall is decorated by Carl Larsson’s impressive wall paintings of the Bergöö family and Hallsberg.

All aboard! From Järle, you take a physical voyage through time! The vintage train that leaves the tiny station takes you to the “iron commu-nity” of Pershyttan and the picturesque “wooden town” of Nora. Built in 1854, next to Sweden’s fi rst railway line, tion is the country’s oldest. There are departures throughout the summer. You can choose between a real steam train and an old-fashioned railbus.

For VW fans. Everyone remembers the “Beetle”! Holmgren’s Volkswagen museum is the world’s largest private collection of VWs. Wander through this classic collection and see Beetles from 1949 to 1975, one for each year. There is also a model from 2004. The museum’s latest acquisition is one of the very last Beetles made in Mexico before production was stopped. Most of the cars are untouched originals. However, there are also rarities. For example, a Karmann-Ghia and custom builds such as a mint-green Beetle limousine!

Golden pumps. Be carried back to the petrol stations of the 50’s! Just outside Vretstorp, there is a reconstructed Shell station from the golden era of this American giant. Contem-porary pumps, oil cans, signs, vending machines and other authentic items are all here. Souvenirs and 50’s and 60’s “memorabilia” can be bought from the museum shop.

Tractor feast. The Tractor mu-seum outside Viby has collected some thirty tractors of different ages and makes. It also has other tractor-related objects. More tractors are on show at the history of agriculture exhibition in Tekniska Kvarnen at Karlslund [32] in Örebro .

In 2003, twenty-fi ve years after his tragic accident at Monza, a memorial sculpture was unveiled a stone’s throw from Ronnie’s childhood home in Almby, Örebro.

at Tysslingen stages an amazing spectacle. For a few hectic weeks, thousand of whooper swans gather here. There can be as many as 4,000 every day! Make time to drop in on the Swan festival that is arranged to coincide with the migration. It has exhibitions, presentations fi lms and guided tours. Tysslingen is a popular destination throughout the year. At Rånnesta, there is a café and an art gallery. There are also two nature information stations by the lake.

Beautiful Örebro. Örebro is beautiful. This may sound like boasting, but we simply have to say it! Our “stateroom”,

the castle surrounded by the Svartån river and rows of stately buildings, has no equal. Furthermore, Stads-

parken, the town’s main park, was recently voted the most beautiful in Sweden. Within walking distance of the city centre, you can fi nd Alnängarna’s water park and, on the shores of Lake Hjälmaren, the Oset and Rynningeviken nature reserves. Then there

are the turn of the century districts in Öster and Karlslund [24]… The list can be made as long as you like!

Kumla oasis. A wonderfully green oasis stretches out below the old water tower in Djupadalsparken. Hire a pedalo and venture out onto the little lake. Play minigolf and then relax with some open-air refreshments at the Sjösidan restaurant. The oasis also has scenic paths, a camping site and the heated pools of Djupadalsbadet.

Culture park. In Karlslund, on the outskirts of Örebro, culture and nature are combined into a beautiful and green mix. Parks, gardens and herb beds surround the over ninety buildings where artists and artisans work. Finally, Karlsund’s nature conservation area is simply made for beautiful walks.

Winter fun. Storstenshöjden in Kils-Storstenshöjden in Kils-Storstenshöjdenbergen is Örebro’s alpine centre. Nine prepared runs, a “crossover” land and sledge hills attract skiing fanatics and young families alike. The lift queues are seldom long. In total, the lifts can handle 5,000 people an hour.If you prefer cross-country skiing, then Ånnaboda is just next door. Over seventy kilometres of prepared trails from short loops to the Kilsberg trail all the way to Nora. Furthermore, snow is a certainty. Next to Kilsbergen Konferens & Lodge in Ånnaboda [18], there is a fi ve-kilometre trail on artifi cial snow.

Stunning. Örebro’s new water tower could never be dull. The architect created an entirely new design that soon set the tone for other Swedish examples and also gave the tower its name, the Mushroom (Svampen). Since the lifts opened almost fi fty years ago, more than eight million people have admired the wonderful views. However, the Mushroom’s cap offers more than views alone. Aqua Nova, a science centre, has experiments and multimedia displays centred on water. The café has tasty refreshments… and fantastic views.

Children’s island. Stora Holmen is an island especially for children. Hire a pedal car and drive around the miniature town. Run about in the play area or drop in on the animals. The miniature train that takes you round the whole island leaves from Trollebo Central. Although you can reach the island by bridge, it is more fun to take Wictoria, the quaint ferry that leaves from Stadsparken [20].

Golf. GolfDigest recently ranked Örebro Golf Club’s course as the eighteenth best in Sweden. This popular course in Lanna is not our only one. Shoes with tradition. The Swedish shoe industry was born in Kumla. Kavat, the popular children’s shoes, are taking the tradition further. Every year, 200,000 pairs of shoes are shipped to shops in four countries. However, some remain in Kumla and can be bought at special prices from the factory shop.
