THEORY OF KNOWLEDGE (TOK) This interdisciplinary requirement is intended to stimulate critical reflection on the knowledge and experience gained inside and outside the classroom. TOK is unique to IBO, which recommends at least 100 teaching hours spanning the programme’s two years.

CREATIVITY, ACTIVITY AND SERVICE (CAS) The IBO’s goal is to educate the whole person and foster responsible, compassionate citizens. The CAS programme encourages students to share their energy and special talents with others by participating in a variety of activities. Through these activities students develop a greater awareness of themselves, concern for others, and the ability to work cooperatively with other people.

The IBO’s goals are to provide individual student challenges in the areas of Creativity, Activity and Service.

EXTENDED ESSAY The 4000 word extended essay is defined as an in-depth study of a limited topic within a subject. Its purpose is to provide candidates with an opportunity to engage in independent research and to develop writing skills expected by universities.

Extended essay categories at St. Mary’s include: English, French, Spanish, History, Human Rights, Politics, Psychology, Philosophy, World Religions, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Theatre, Visual Arts and Music.

IB HONOUR CODE The IB Programme cultivates the virtues of honour, courtesy, and perseverance. Of these virtues, honour is of great importance, for it is personal integrity that will influence and finally determine many of our actions and beliefs. To help advance the development of such values, an Honour Code has been established. The code reinforces values that are central to the IB tradition of excellence and prevent violations of that tradition such as plagiarism.

INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE PROGRAMME MISSION STATEMENT

The International Baccalaureate is best described as a “Challenging educational programme for a worldwide community of schools… creating a better world.” (taken from What Can I Be? Telling the IB Story, page 39). It aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right. The International Baccalaureate embodies a philosophy of pre-university education, which has the following aims and advantages:

Aims • Breadth: students follow a balanced program, including elements of each of the major fields of

study. • Depth: students pursue their particular strength to an advanced level. • Independent Study: students work on their own in developing an area of special interest

culminating in a major research essay. • Critical Thinking: students develop the intellectual rigor and philosophical background necessary to

evaluate and use the knowledge they have acquired. • Creativity, Action, Service: students develop a spirit of discovery and contribute to the society to

which they belong. • International Perspective: students develop a broad awareness of a

variety of cultures and traditions, and respect for different perspectives within the global community.

Advantages • Fulfills two rigorous curricula (Alberta and IB). • School within a school atmosphere. • University credit(s) for most IB courses. • IB students benefit from working with an exceptional peer

group and demonstrate a strong commitment to learning and develop the skills and discipline necessary for success in the competitive modern world. • Students consistently score 10-20% above provincial average on

Alberta Learning Diploma exams in all subjects and classes.

IB learners strive to be:

Knowledgeable—They ap-proach unfamiliar situations

and uncertainty with courage and forethought, and have the independence of spirit to ex-

plore new roles, ideas and strat-egies. They are brave and artic-ulate in defending their beliefs.

IB learners strive to be

Inquirers—they develop their natural curiousity. They ac-quire the skills necessary to

conduct inquiry and research and show independence in

learning. They actively enjoy learning and this love of learn-ing will be sustained through-

out their lives. © IBO

• Students who graduate from an IB Programme are sought after by universities for their academic achievements and for their potential contributions to the university and to society.

• Students’ volunteer hours outside of the classroom setting provide students with experiences to better themselves and others.

• IB students place themselves in an advantageous position when applying for scholarships.
