Year for Priests June 19, 2009 - June 19, 2010 We thank you, God our Father, for those who have responded to your call to priestly ministry. Accept the sure knowledge of your love. Open their hearts to the power and consolation of the Holy Spirit. Lead them to new depths of union with your Son. Increase in them profound faith in the Sacraments they celebrate as they nourish, strengthen and heal us. Lord Jesus Christ, grant that these, your priests, may inspire us to strive for holiness by the power of their example, as men of prayer who ponder your word and follow your will. O Mary, Mother of Christ and our mother, guard with your maternal care these chosen ones, so dear to the Heart of your Son. Intercede for our priests that, offering the Sacrifice of your Son, they may be conformed more each day to the image of your Son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen. Some time ago, I came across this parable and I wanted to share it with you. The original author is unknown.

An Easter Parable

A billionaire and his only son loved to collect rare works of art. They had everything in their collection, from rare Egyptian vases to Raphaels and works by modern masters, including Picasso and Monet. They would often sit together and admire the great works of art. When the Viet Nam conflict broke out, the son went to war. He was very courageous and died in battle while rescuing another soldier. The father was duly notified and grieved deeply for his only son.

About a month later, just before Christmas, there was a knock at the door. A young man stood at the door with a large package in his hands. He said “Sir, you don’t know me, but I am the soldier for whom your son gave his life. He saved many lives that day, and he was carrying me to safety when a bullet struck him in the heart and he died instantly. He often talked about you, and your love for art.” The young man held out his package. “I know this isn’t much. I’m not really a great artist, but I think your son would have wanted you to have this.” The father opened the package. It was a portrait of his son, painted by the young man whose life his son had saved.

The father stared in awe at the way the soldier had captured the personality of his son in the painting. The father was so drawn to the eyes that his own eyes welled up with tears. He thanked the young man and offered to pay him for the picture. “Oh, no sir, I could never repay what your son did for me. It’s a gift.” The father proudly hung the portrait over his mantle. Every time visitors came to his home, he took them to see the portrait of his son before he showed them any of the other great works he had collected . The old man died a few months later.

After his will was read, there was to be a great auction of his entire collection of master paintings. Many influential people gathered, excited about seeing the great paintings and having an opportunity to purchase one for their collections. On the platform sat the crude, but soulful painting of the old man’s son. The auctioneer pounded his gavel. “We will start the bidding with this picture of the son. Who will bid for this picture?”

There was silence. Then a voice in the back of the room shouted, “We want to see the famous paintings. Skip this amateur piece of trash.” But the auctioneer persisted. “Will someone...anyone...bid for this painting? Who will start the bidding? Do I hear $100? $200?”

Another voice shouted angrily, “We didn’t come to see this painting. We came to see the Van Goghs, the Rembrandts. Get on with the real bids!”

But still the auctioneer continued. “Who wants this portrait of the son? Who’ll take the son?”

Finally, a voice came from the very back of the room. It was the longtime gardener of the old man and his son. “I’ll give $100 for the painting.” he said quietly. Being a poor man, it was all he could afford. “We have $100!” the auctioneer bellowed. “Who will bid $200?

Give it to him for $100.” screamed out a rich man in the audience. “Let’s see the masters.” “$100 is the bid,” the auctioneer replied calmly. “Won’t someone bid $200?” The crowd was becoming angry. They didn’t want the picture of the old man’s son. They wanted the more worthy paintings for their collections.

Page 2

From the Director’s desk… “The auctioneer pounded the gavel. “Going once, going twice - SOLD for $100!” Immediately, a man sitting on the second row shouted, “Now let’s get on with the real collection!”

But the auctioneer laid down his gavel. “I’m sorry, but the auctions is over.” he said. “But what about the paintings? The great masters?” the audience roared in one voice. “I am very sorry. But when I was called to conduct this auction, I was told of a secret codicil in the will. I was not allowed to reveal that stipulation until this time. According to the terms of the will, only the painting of the son would be auctioned. Whoever bought that painting would inherit the entire estate valued at $2.3 billion, including the properties in Europe, the South Pacific, the ranch lands in Montana—and of course, all of the paintings. The man who took the son gets everything!”

The secret codicil in God’s will, you see, is the same: Whoever takes the Son, inherits everything.

Catechetical Resources for the Roman Missal

The following Catechetical Resources, are just a few of the resources available in English on the USCCB website – www.usccb.org/romanmissal. The site notes that “the catechetical materials on the forthcoming changes in the Roman Missal are not as urgent in Spanish as in English. Since Spanish is a Romance language derived from Latin, the present Mass texts in Spanish more easily follow the Latin typical edition with a literal translation and a closer grammatical structure.” Two examples are provided on the USCCB website. Topics include: Questions on the revised translation of the Order of Mass Changes in the Parts of the Priest in the revised Order of Mass Changes in the Parts of the People in the revised Order of Mass Resources on the Eucharistic Prayer.

Free Webinar: Catechizing Digital Natives

Jonathan Sullivan, Director of Catechetical Ministries for the Diocese of Springfield, IL, will be offering another webinar on technology and catechesis. Today’s generation gap seems larger than ever. The students in our parishes and schools are comfortable with technologies that seemed like science fiction when many of us were growing up. Given the radically different way that “digital natives” use technology to take in and process knowledge, what are the implications for the catechetical ministry of the Church? How can we reach out to them without compromising the Gospel? And who do teachers and catechists need to know about this “brave new world?”. To register for this free webinar choose one of the four sessions (Tuesday, April 6 – 3:30-4:30; Tuesday April 6, 7:30 – 8:30, Wednesday, April 7, 3:30-4:30 or Thursday, April 8, 7:30-8:30 – NOTE: all times are Central time. Just go to www.jonathanfsullivan.com/2010/03/upcoming-free-webinar-catechizing-digital-natives. You can also watch a recording of his last webinar, Social Networking: A Primer for Catholic Teachers and Catechists at www.mycatholicvoice.com. Passport to Success – Summer Institute and Retreat

Save the date – June 25-27, 2010 at Immaculate Conception Spiritual Renewal Center in Putnam, CT. This four-part journey for training and enrichment will be presented in a retreat-like format. Sessions will include Part I (Preparing for the Journey), Part II (Embarking on the Journey), Part III (Ports of Call) and Part IV (Extending your Journey). For more information, contact Pat Keck.
