Requirements for Volunteers
At the Diocesan Council meeting on 23 August 2018, Council adopted amendments to the
Safe Ministry Check (SMC) form.
Because of these amendments, volunteers are no longer required to complete a Statutory
Declaration as part of the SMC. Instead, they must complete an ‘Applicant’s Declaration’,
which must be signed but is not required to be witnessed.
From now, please ensure that all applicants for volunteer positions in your parish are
provided with the new declaration form, which is available on the Diocesan website under
‘Safe Ministry Checks’. The new declaration form for volunteers can be found here. The
current declaration form for Clergy and paid workers can be found here.

Archbishop’s Drought Relief Appeal This map of Queensland indicates the magnitude of the
drought and clearly shows areas in our own Diocese, and
beyond, which are suffering the most.
Statistics alone do not reveal the hardship and strain placed on
families living in drought affected regions. The challenge
involved in enduring prolonged drought is considerable. Faith
in Christ and drawing on collective resources to overcome
present difficulties helps enormously.
To that end, donations are sought for the Archbishop’s Drought
Relief Fund in order that some direct relief can be provided to
people in need, to be distributed through clergy and lay
leaders in parishes most affected by drought. These funds
complement donations to the Bush Ministry Fund, which
provides assistance to parishes that are experiencing financial
hardship, in order that they can continue to provide ministry in
the regions.
There are two ways to donate to the Archbishop’s Drought Relief
Fund:
1. Over the counter at any Westpac branch — BSB: 034 844
Account number: 000148582.
2. By EFT — BSB: 704 901, Account Number 00014858
Alternatively, donations to the Bush Ministry Fund:
1. By EFT — BSB: 704 901, Account number: 00013448
To apply for assistance from the Fund, please refer to the
Parish Claim Form.

After many years with our previous insurance provider, the Diocesan Insurances have moved to
a program managed by our new brokers JLT. This takes effect from our renewal date which is
31 October. From your perspective you should notice no change, as the vast majority of your
requirements will continue to be met as previously by our internal insurance team of Philip
Tolley and Mai Peregrina. Our website has been updated with new Certificates of Currency
which are accessible here and if your vehicles are insured through the Diocese then it is
important to be aware that the insurer has changed from Vero to QBE and the accident process
is accessible here. We are expecting to issue the insurance invoices to you in early December
this year. Pleasingly this will allow those who choose to take advantage of our Interest Free
Instalment Plan the ability to spread your insurance contribution over 10 months which should
have the effect of smoothing the impact on your finances.
Should you have any queries please contact Philip Tolley on 3835 2256, Mai Peregrina on 3835

SOME CHANGES IN INSURANCE
4 WEDNESDAY WEEKLY | News, information and events for the Anglican Church Southern Queensland community
JULY
WHAT MATTERS ABOUT JESUS? The new SFC Short Course: What Matters About Jesus launched to great reviews from parishes
and individuals! Check out some of the responses:
I have a three year old, so I love that I can visit these videos in my own time. I watched
the first one at 11pm, but it had me thinking all night! The presenters are so engaging
and passionate. They know their stuff and communicate clearly – I’ve been an Anglican
all my life, but these videos made me think about Jesus, the person and the legacy, in
ways I’ve not done before. I’ve used the questions to prod my own thinking as I go
through my day. This course is not a “one stop” for me, I will visit them again and
again.
The Short Course provided great content to think about, but my favourite thing was
watching the speakers engage with their topics. It’s wonderful to know we have such
talent in our church…it made me excited to learn more about my faith.
The content was excellent - a fluent and engaging speaker whose knowledge shines
through – very thought provoking
A thought-provoking presentation – gives much to discuss in a small group study
Makes one think about the questions…made me think about aspects of the Jesus story I
hadn’t considered before
Excellent!
I like the fact that it was broken down into questions which are our questions too.
Interesting video and presented in everyday language for all to understand and
question. It pulls apart and delves deeply into…many important questions raised in the
Bible.
See here to watch these for yourself. As you can see, these six short videos can be tackled in
a small group, or in your own time, or (wait for it!) BOTH. The next SFC Short Course: Being
Anglican hits the internet soon, so get your cuppa ready for Archbishop Phillip Aspinall’s
insights into the Anglican Church and what makes it unique and a church for today! This
course also comes with discussion questions fit for small groups and individuals.
In other Lay Education news, keep an eye out for the new courses in the Project 360
collection! Faith360: The Puzzle of Paul, and Faith360: Faith Seeks Understanding premier in
parishes in 2019. Contact FormedFaith to book a 360 course for your parish!

Provide safe environments for our people by keeping up to date and continuing to comply
with relevant WHS legislation. It is recommended that clergy, churchwardens, new parish
council members and parish administrators attend this training annually.
UPCOMING TRAINING DATES
Annual Parish Safety Management Training
Electrical Near Miss – see here for Safety Alert.
Parish Incident Reporting An important element of safety management is the reporting of Parish incidents. All incidents
involving workers, volunteers, contractors, Clergy or visitors must be reported immediately to
Parish Leaders. This is a requirement under the WHS legislation and is critical to ensuring a
safe Parish for all. The following incidents are required to be reported:
• No Injury Incident • First Aid Injury • Medical Treatment
• Near Miss • Property Damage • Notifiable Incident
• Psychological injury/illness
When an incident occurs, it should be recorded on the Incident Report form here. It is good
practice to conduct an investigation for all incidents to determine the cause and identify
appropriate actions to prevent a reoccurrence. Contact WHS where you require assistance or to
recommend procedural changes.
Definitions:
Incident - An unplanned event or chain of events, which has, or could have caused injury,
disease and/or damage (loss) to a worker.
Incident Classifications:
No injury incident - An event has occurred, however no injury was incurred at the time e.g. trip
or slip up the stairs. (Why it is important to report no injury incidents, some injuries such as
sprains may not become evident immediately).
First Aid - Application of first aid within the Parish (e.g. minor bleeding, scrapes, etc.)
Medical Treatment - Treatment from a doctor, ambulance or admittance to hospital
Near Miss - A situation or thing occurring that did not cause harm but could have resulted in a
serious injury or illness.
7 WEDNESDAY WEEKLY | News, information and events for the Anglican Church Southern Queensland community
Community groups across Queensland are invited to say no to
domestic and family violence by hosting an event during
Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month in May next
year. Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family
Violence Di Farmer said applications for the 2019 Domestic
and Family Violence Prevention Month Community Grants are
now open. Grants of up to $5000 are available.
Domestic violence is a scourge on our society and impacts far
too many lives and too many have been lost to it. Every May
Queenslanders say ‘NOT NOW, NOT EVER’ to violence in our
communities as they raise awareness of domestic and family
violence. In 2019 the Palaszczuk Government has $150,000 in
one-off funding available to assist organisations and
community groups interested in hosting an event to raise
awareness of domestic and family violence.
In 2018, funds were distributed to 35 community organisations
to hold 43 awareness raising events, projects and activities.
Events were held in every part of the state. These events sent a
clear message that violence of this type is not tolerated and
that by working together, people can make a real
difference. While domestic and family violence impacts every
community, in 2019 we are also encouraging submissions that
focus on domestic and family violence for people who identify
as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex or Queer.
Domestic and family violence has a devastating impact on too
many of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
and funding will be earmarked for events that raise awareness
of domestic and family violence in Indigenous communities.”
To apply for a grant, see here.

Creating Partnerships between Generations
The world is ageing rapidly and will continue to do so
every year until ageing reaches its peak around 2050.
This will place great stress on younger people who will
be paying heavy taxes to enable pensions to be paid,
health care to be financed and age friendly housing to
be created.
It will greatly relieve these financial burdens and foster
enormous goodwill if older people offer to go into
business, professional and social partnerships with the
young in creating their future. For the November Wasting
Time event, Everald Compton will explore many
possibilities to do this and will invite those who attend to
contribute their ideas in discussion.
Everald was a Founding Director of National Seniors
Australia and is Chairman of the LONGEVITY
INNOVATION HUB, which is a not-for-profit entity
implementing the Blueprint for an Ageing Australia.

The Art of Advent: a painting a day from Advent to Epiphany / Jane Williams [2018]
Advent for Everyone: a journey through Luke / N. T. Wright [2018]
Advent will soon be here and if you are looking for a resource for study
(either personally or in a group) or individual meditation for this time,
the Roscoe Library has many resources. These are two recently
purchased ones. The art book is the Archbishop of York’s Advent Book
for 2018. It is a beautiful and varied collection of images to take you day
by day from 1 December to 6 January. Jane Williams comments on each
picture, drawing us into the images and finding timeless wisdom.
Tom Wright’s book is part of his popular “Advent for Everyone” series,
focussing on the Gospel themes of encouragement, renewal, justice and
celebration. Drawing on key passages from his “Luke for Everyone”
commentary, these sparkling reflections take you on a journey of
spiritual enlightenment, guiding you towards the wonder and joy of
Christmas.
READING WITH SPIRITUAL EYES You are invited to join our book club, Reading
with Spiritual Eyes , based on works of fiction.
Our next book is Boy Swallows Universe by
Trent Dalton. You may like to explore this
book with your group of friends, work
colleagues, or parishioners. More information,
including discussion questions, can be found
here.
You may also wish to gather with the wider community to share
your insights – so mark your calendars for Tuesday, 27
November from 5.30 pm – 7 pm. On that evening, the Roscoe
Library will host a discussion facilitated by Bishop Godfrey Fryar
around Boy Swallows Universe, and the next book will be
‘launched’. For catering purposes, please register here.

ANGLICANS RESPOND TO CLIMATE CRISIS
"Our urgent cry is to the Anglican Communion: To our Dioceses,
Provinces, CAPA, and Lambeth 2020, that Good News for creation and
ecological justice be placed at the top of the agenda." With the UN
warning that irreversible catastrophic climate changes are now a
possibility, the Revd Canon Dr Jeff Golliher, Adviser for the Environment,
Climate Change and Sustainable Communities at the Anglican
Communion Office at the United Nations; and the Revd Canon Dr
Rachel Mash, Environmental Coordinator for the Anglican Church of
Southern Africa and Chair of the Anglican Communion Environmental
Network, explore how Anglicans are responding to the climate crisis.
See here for more details.
When despair grows in me and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake rests in his beauty on the
water, and the great heron feeds. I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief. I come into the
presence of still water. And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting for their light. For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and
am free. Wendell Berry

Archbishop Phillip's comment:
Stories have the power to transform, but familiarity can blunt their
impact. In this collection imagination and whimsy combine to prompt
fresh puzzlement that demands probing and pondering, the first steps
to who knows where.
But what if she’d said `No’? The Rev’d Dr Cathy Laufer
Professor Peter Sherlock, Vice-Chancellor, University of Divinity, Melbourne:
This book tells a series of marvellous stories rich in wonder. Drawing on the centuries-old
story-telling traditions of poets, playwrights and rabbis, the author invites listeners and readers
deep into the lives and events of the Bible. Each tale is both accessible to children and full of
wisdom for adults, opening up a new point of view or a fresh theological twist on a passage of
scripture that may be beloved or virtually unknown. The characters ring true, and many of
them are unforgettable as they - like us - wrestle with life and death, friend and stranger, God
and neighbour.
