Carole De Vito President

Fraternally Yours,

Last month we had a very good meeting. We installed our new council members and I think everyone enjoyed the quizzes about Italy. This month on Wednesday, March 25th, we will again celebrate our annual St. Joseph Celebration Dinner/Dance. We have a great menu planned; see the other side of this page, Sound Relations will be our entertainment.

The Jupiter Jubilee was cancelled due to reports of very bad weather for that

Saturday, the town may reschedule.

Our members had a very tasty lunch at Lynora’s Restaurant. The restaurant is located in a very pretty area in the Alton Shopping Center. We celebrated Valentine’s Day.

Marie Tippet, our travel agent has a very interesting trip to the West Coast of Florida. It is a two day trip, April 4th and 5th, and includes Palm Sunday Mass at the Ave Maria Cathedral near Naples, more on page 2.

Next month we will be having “Bingo Nite” at the April meeting and maybe a Pot Luck Dinner in May. June 3rd is our scholarship meeting. Please have your applications for the scholarships in by March 31, 2020.

I would like some ideas about how to celebrate Mothers’ Day and Fathers’ Day this year. Also next February 2021 will be Cuore d’ Italia’s 25th Anniversary that has to be a very big celebration.Happy St. Patrick’s DayHappy St. Joseph’s Day

Daylight Saving Time is the practice of changing the clocks forward one hour from standard time during the summer months, and changing them back again in the fall. The general idea is that this allows us all to make better use of natural daylight; however, DST has many detractors. Note that it’s called “Daylight Saving” (not “Savings”). OK, now that that’s out of the way….

When Is Daylight Saving Time 2020?When do we set our clocks forward? Daylight Saving Time begins on Sunday, March 8, at 2 a.m. Remember to “spring ahead” and set your clocks forward 1 hour (i.e., losing 1 hour). (We do this on Saturday night when we go to bed.)

When Do We Set Our Clocks Back?Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday,

November 1, at 2:00 a.m. Now, we “fall back” by setting our clocks back 1 hour (i.e., regaining 1 hour).(The exceptions to DST are American Samoa, most of Arizona, Guam, Hawaii, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.)Why Is There Daylight Saving Time? Here’s the short history of this phenomenon….Credit for Daylight Saving Time is often attributed to Benjamin Franklin, who suggested the idea in 1784 as a joke. British-born New Zealander George Hudson proposed the concept in 1885 but was ridiculed. The idea was revived in 1907, when William Willett, an Englishman, proposed a system in the pamphlet The Waste of Daylight. The Germans were the first to officially

adopt the light-extending system in 1915 as a fuel-saving measure during World War I. The British switched one year later, and the United States followed in 1918, when Congress passed the Standard Time Act, which established our time zones. This experiment lasted only until 1920, when the law was repealed due to opposition from dairy farmers (cows don’t pay attention to clocks).During World War II, Daylight Saving Time was imposed once again (this time year-round) to save fuel. Since then, Daylight Saving Time has been used on and off, with different start and end dates. Currently, Daylight Saving Time begins at 2:00 a.m. on the second Sunday of March and ends at 2:00 a.m. on the first Sunday in November.

THE EVENTS in MARCH - WHAT IS DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME?

St. Patrick, (flourished 5th century, Britain and Ireland; feast day March 17), patron saint and national apostle of Ireland, credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland and probably responsible in part for the Christianization of the Picts and Anglo-Saxons. He is known only from two short works, the Confessio, a spiritual autobiography, and his Letter to Coroticus, a denunciation of British mistreatment of Irish Christians.Who Was Saint Patrick? Was there really a St. Patrick? Definitely. Did he really drive the snakes out of Ireland? Probably not, since snakes weren’t native to Ireland.*Many aren’t aware as they celebrate this festive holiday in tribute to Ireland that Saint Patrick was actually Italian. Born in the 5th century, Saint Patrick was born in the British Isles, though he was not of British decent.* St. Patrick was born in Britain as Maewyn Succat. At age 16 (around AD 400), he was kidnapped from his home on the west coast and carried off to Ireland to become a slave who worked as a shepherd. After six years, he escaped; upon returning home, he received his call (in a dream) to preach the Gospel. He spent the next 15 or so years in a monastery, preparing for

Saint of Ireland

St. Joseph’s Day is celebrated all over the world. In Sicily, participants usually wear red and build what is known as “St. Joseph’s Table.” This table is often decorated with

flowers and candles, and people place wine and foods on it that are considered lucky. Some of these lucky foods include fava beans, lemons, and other foods that contain breadcrumbs. All of these foods have symbolic meanings. Fava beans were the only things that survived a drought during the Middle Ages in Italy – which is why it is considered lucky. Breadcrumbs are worked into the recipes of the dishes because St. Joseph was a carpenter and the breadcrumbs represent sawdust. Some people place fish and seafood on the altar as well. However, what is not placed on St. Joseph’s Table is any dish which contains meat. That’s because this holiday occurs during Lent.

ST. JOSEPH’S DAY

It is also believed that if a woman manages to sneak a lemon off of St. Joseph’s Table on this day, then she will have better luck finding a husband. It is also customary for people to indulge themselves with doughnuts and crème puffs. In Italy, Spain and Portugal, St. Joseph’s Day is Father’s Day. Since New Orleans, Louisiana in the United States was a major port of entry for Sicilian immigrants during the late 1800s and has a large Sicilian population, this holiday is celebrated by the whole city. On St. Joseph’s Day, St. Joseph’s Tables are built both for the public and by private individuals. These altars are then filled with a variety of different foods – just like the celebrations in Sicily – however, these foods usually have somewhat of a Cajun twist to them. Afterward, all of the food is then usually donated to the poor. New Orleans also has a variety of parades and marching bands performing on the streets during this day.St. Joseph’s Day is also traditionally celebrated in many other American communities, particularly those who have large Italian populations. This includes cities such as New York, Syracuse, Buffalo, Jersey City, Chicago, Gloucester, Providence, Kansas City and St. Louis. In Providence, some people will wear red clothing on this day – much in the same way that people will wear green on St. Patrick’s Day. Taken from the Internet

his missionary work. When he became a priest, his name was changed to Patricius, and eventually, Patrick. Although some Christians lived in Ireland at the time, it was Patrick who spread Christianity throughout the land and brought an organized church into existence.

First day of Spring

One is a Pisces, the other an Aries. They are both Tuscans. One was from Caprese – Michaelangelo, the other of Vinci, two small towns about two and a half hours distant from each other. One was born three years before the other. They were two leaders of the Italian Renaissance and two authentic geniuses. To be precise their names are Leonardo DaVinci and Michaelangelo Buonarroti.

LEONARDO is considered one of the greatest geniuses of mankind. In his sixty seven years of life he did everything in the history of art and science. He was a painter, sculptor, architect, engineer, stage designer, anatomist, literary man, musician, and inventor. He was the illegitimate son of a twenty five year old notary, Piero DaVinci, grew up in the wealthy family of his father receiving an excellent education. At a young age he worked in a very important workshop in Florence and immediately started to do marvelous work such as “The Last Supper” and “La Giaconda”. Besides his artistic and anatomical works he was also an inventor working on a flying machine some centuries before the airplanes and spaceships. Privately, he was a strict vegetarian and probably a homosexual.

MICHAELANGELO BUONARROTI lived a long life until eighty nine. He was one of the greatest artists of all time. He was a sculptor, painter, architect and poet. His work included “David”, “La Pieta” and the frescos in the Sistine Chapel. He was the son of a city official. His family was part of Florentine patricians who were in financial straits when he was born and he was left in the care of a nanny who was the daughter of a stonecutter. His artistic talent bloomed. As he grew his character became touchy, short tempered and always dissatisfied.

Leonardo and Michaelangelo were contemporaries but it is not known if they ever met, but surely they influenced each other. If you ask children questions about Leonardo they relate to the best seller of Dan Brown. If you ask about Michaelangelo you’ll get fewer answers. The intellectuals, Italian and Foreigners know more about these two geniuses, but for the rest the memory of their work is fading away.

The calendars make great gifts. Give a calendar to the person who has everything. The lucky number picked will be in effect for the whole year for only $50.00 and you

can win as many times as the lucky number is chosen. There are various amounts to win, $50.00 everyday and many special days (holidays) that are valued at $100, $200, $500 or even $1000. We have had
