A SYNTAX OF SEPTUAGINT GREEK

This is the first ever comprehensive analysis of the morphosyntax

and syntax of Septuagint Greek. The work is based on the most

up-to-date editions of the Septuagint. The so-called Antiochene ver-

sion of Samuel, Kings, and Chronicles as well as Judges has been

studied. Though this is a synchronic grammar, and though not sys-

tematic, comparison with Classical Greek, the Greek of contempo-

rary literature of the Hellenistic-Roman period, papyri and epigraph-

ical data, and New Testament Greek has often been undertaken.

Even when analysing translated documents of the Septuagint, the

perspective is basically that of its readers. However, attempts were

made to determine in what ways and to what extent the structure of

the Semitic source languages may have influenced the selection of

this or that particular construction by translators. At many places it

is demonstrated and illustrated how an analysis of the morphosyntax

and syntax can illuminate our general interpretation of the Septua-

gint text.

This reader is for anyone very eager to read the story of Daniel in

the lions’ den and many other fascinating stories in their original

language, Aramaic. A brief outline of Biblical Aramaic grammar is

followed by a verse-to-verse grammatical commentary on the Ara-

maic chapters in the books of Daniel and Ezra. Both the outline

grammar and the grammatical commentary presuppose basic knowl-

edge of the grammar and vocabulary of Biblical Hebrew. Constant

references are made in the commentary to relevant sections of the

outline grammar. The commentary is written in a user-friendly, not

overtly technical language. Some grammatical exercises with keys

La célèbre «prophétie des ossements desséchés» d’Ezéchiel (Ez 37,1-

14) est généralement considérée dans deux perspectives contraires:

l’interprétation historique se conforme à l’intention explicite de l’au-

teur (cf. v.11), et la considère donc comme un oracle de Salut qui

annonce au Peuple d’Israël le retour de l’Exil à Babylone; l’interpré-

tation eschatologique, quant à elle, la transforme en vision grandiose

de la résurrection finale du Peuple saint, au-delà de l’histoire. Cette

dernière lecture, unanime chez les Pères de l’Église et reflétée dans

le sensus fidelium courant, ne trouve pas d’échos dans la vie officielle

de l’Église d’aujourd’hui: aucun document du Magistère n’y fait

référence; les théologiens dogmatiques, dans leur traitement de

l’eschatologie, en général ignorent Ez 37; la liturgie ne proclame pas

cette lecture pour les messes des défunts ou dans les célébrations

orientées vers les derniers temps. Nous avons voulu confronter cette

situation avec un «objet historique» assez particulier, une série de

trois textes, importants pour la théologie chrétienne, qui font recours

explicitement à la prophétie d’Ezéchiel: l’évangile de Matthieu, dans

sa description des signes qui accompagnent la mort du Messie

(Mt 27); l’Apocalypse de Jean, dans la narration des deux témoins

(Ap 11); et le Commentaire sur Jean d’Origène (livre X).

MARRIAGE METAPHOR

Jer 2:1-4:2 is a locus classicus of the prophetic marriage metaphor,

which describes the turbulent relationship between Israel and her

God. The literary form of the Book of Jeremiah preserved in the

Septuagint (LXX) invites a new diachronic study of this text. The

systematic, comparative study of the LXX and the Hebrew (MT)

makes up a substantial part of the present book (ca. 200 pages). The

redaction-critical reconstruction follows the literary form thus

retrieved. The edition preserved in the MT introduces the marriage

metaphor where the earlier text used general feminine imagery, or

suggested rather a filial relationship. The inspiration for the revision

came from the Books of Hosea and Ezekiel. The interpretations

specific to the translator of the LXX do not point to any coherent

agenda. The earliest passages clearly applying the marriage metaphor

were introduced at the latest stages of the redaction history. Their

results demonstrate the growing importance of the marriage meta-

phor, as well as the ancient editors’ conviction about the unity and

interconnection of the books which make up the Bible.

ESAU IN JERUSALEMThe Rise of a Seirite Religious Elite

in Zion at the Persian Period

The post-exilic biblical writings speak in two contrasting voices. The

first focuses on the Babylonian repatriates and ignores the Israelite

population that remained in the land during the exile. It upholds an

exclusive relationship between YHWH and the community organ-

ized around Jerusalem and its temple. The second voice takes a

contrasting and much more universalistic approach to the relation-

ship with YHWH and even promotes its expansion among foreign

nations through the diffusion of musical worship. The first voice

clearly echoes the theology evoked in Jeremiah (especially in the

metaphor of the good and bad figs in Jeremiah 24) and extensively

developed in Ezekiel. The second voice, however, appears to be dis-

tant from the classical Israelite theology. It is shown in this study

that this second voice echoes a pre-Israelite cult of YHWH that

originated in the land of Seir and denotes the existence of a Seirite

religious elite in post-exilic Zion. Part 1 of the study investigates the

reason for the presence of a small group of Edomite/Seirite musi-

cians and poets, self-defined as “sons of Zerah” or “Ezrahites,” in

early post-exilic Jerusalem, and clarifies the nature of their yahwistic

religious background. With the help of the books of Nehemiah,

Chronicles, and Psalms, Part 2 analyzes the Levitization of these

foreign singers and the opposition this process stimulated among the

community of the Sons of Exile. Part 3 examines the transformation

of these Ezrahite singers into a new religious elite, a process pro-

moted mainly by Nehemiah and his followers, and explores the the-

ological changes this new situation stimulated.

These papers of the 62nd Colloquium Biblicum Lovaniense (July

16-18, 2013) illustrate that the Apostle Paul is an excellent example

for the cultural exchange so typical of the eastern provinces of the

Roman Empire during the early imperial age. He was a Jew from

Tarsus and regarded himself, according to his own words, as Hebrew

descended from Hebrews, and as Pharisee according to the way of

interpreting the Law. However, he wrote his letters in Greek, show-

ing acquaintance not only with the Greek translations of the Law

and the Prophets, but also with contemporary Greek philosophical

concepts, rhetorical style and e.g. the tradition of Euripides’ trage-

dies. He lived and worked in several Roman colonies and absorbed

Romanized concepts, metaphors and a vision of reaching from the

eastern frontier of the Empire to Spain in the West. Influenced by

different intellectual worlds, Paul stood at the crossroads of cultural

interaction.

Job, J. Vermeylen en propose une analyse approfondie. Selon lui, à

éditions successives, situées entre le Ve et le IIe siècle. Chacune d’elles

développe sa propre théologie et sa propre vision de la détresse de

This volume brings together twenty-two essays on the Gospel and

the Epistles of John, published in the period 1980-2014. They are

the fruit of a lifelong fascination with the Johannine literature, first

with the Gospel, later also with the Epistles.

The first twelve chapters concern themes from Johannine literature:

translation, theological issues, use and significance of the Old Tes-

tament and of Jewish tradition, and introductory questions concern-

ing John’s Epistles. The next ten chapters are studies of individual

passages from Gospel and Epistles, with a special interest in passages

in which interpretation of Scripture figures prominently.

Together, the chapters show that a Christology centring on the

human being Jesus as the only revealer of God is the heart of Johan-

nine theology, that the Jewish Scriptures are used in John’s Gospel

to legitimate Jesus as God’s revealer, and that this Gospel is a writing

that claims to constitute a new Holy Scripture.

The redactional history of the book of Nehemiah is a hotly debated

topic within scholarship. While a general consensus both attributes

Neh. 1:1-2:20; 4:1-7:5; and 13:4-31 to the Nehemiah Memoir and

postulates the influence of ancient Near Eastern royal inscriptions,

previous scholarship lacks a systematic examination of Persian-

period royal inscriptions in discussing the redactional history of

Nehemiah. This present book examines Persian-period inscriptions

from Judah’s neighbors, Babylonia and Egypt, and identifies a prop-

aganda model in which Persian kings are supported by the local

deities and are heirs to the local dynasties. This propaganda model

resembles depictions of Artaxerxes in sections of Nehemiah often

attributed to the Memoir. Challenging a recent trend attributing

religious references to Hellenistic redactions, this study finds that

references in Nehemiah to divine authorization of Artaxerxes akin

to the royal propaganda model in Persian-period texts from Babylon

and Egypt most likely date to the Persian-period Nehemiah Memoir

due to a shared literary context.

Reconsideration of the nature of the Greek attested in both the

Septuagint and the New Testament has focussed in the past century

on its place within the history of Greek. A central facet of the work

of John Lee has been to demonstrate that biblical Greek is contem-

porary Koine, comparable to that found in inscriptions and papyri,

and that it can be positioned within the history of the language.

These essays honour him in considering various aspects of biblical

Greek within its context. Lexicography is discussed in the light of

particular ‘Jewish Greek’ features, the role of context for semantics,

and the use of Modern Greek in lexicons. Septuagint translation

techniques involving transliterations, loan-words, and ethnic termi-

nology, and the grammatical topics of deponency and verbal aspect,

are all analysed. The importance of papyri and numismatic evidence

is highlighted, while the material witnessess of doublets in the man-

uscript tradition and of later Jewish versions represented in the

Cairo Genizah and in marginal glosses are also examined.

The synoptic Gospels record a remarkable story about an anony-

mous woman – the ‘Haemorrhoissa’ in further tradition – suffering

from incessant uterine bleeding who, without Jesus’ intention or

knowledge, was healed by his power (Mark 5:24b-34parr). The

Haemorrhoissa motif had an important place in early Christianity,

and from its earliest manifestation as synoptic narrative it developed

into a multifarious motif embedded in a variety of contexts. One of

its most remarkable developments was its transformation into the

Veronica motif, the roots of which thus lie in early Christianity.

This historical-anthropological investigation of the early Christian

Haemorrhoissa motif hence is driven by two primary research ques-

tions. The first: why was the early Christian Haemorrhoissa motif

so richly represented and did it develop so multifariously? The sec-

ond: what did the early Christian constellation of the Haemor-

rhoissa motif contribute to the genesis of the vera icon and its con-

stitution as image paradigm and, intrinsically linked to this, as

anthropological paradigm?

Le Psautier constitue un recueil de textes d’époques diverses, aux

préoccupations variées. On peut distinguer des psaumes ayant eu

une existence indépendante, avant la constitution du Psautier actuel,

et des psaumes littéraires liés à la rédaction du Psautier en tant que

tel. Une étape intermédiaire a été la constitution de recueils, avec les

psautiers davidiques, le psautier coréite et le psautier asaphite. La

constitution des psautiers davidiques est liée à la structuration d’en-

semble du Psautier autour de l’espérance messianique davidique. Ils

ont permis d’intégrer des psaumes aux perspectives très différentes

dans le cadre de la question messianique, par le moyen des «titres»

utilisant souvent des rapprochements verbaux avec les livres de

Samuel. La rédaction finale du Psautier doit se comprendre en fonc-

tion d’un système d’inclusion. La partie centrale, fondamentale pour

la question messianique, même si le terme « Messie » n’y est jamais

utilisé, est constituée par le psautier élohiste Ps 42-83, construction

artificielle mais hautement symbolique avec le rôle du nombre 42.

Après le constat de la disparition du Messie davidique (Ps 89) et sa

substitution par le messie sacerdotal (Ps 84,10), l’alliance avec les

patriarches prend la place de celle avec David (Ps 105). David est

finalement réintégré en tant que fondateur du culte, en relation avec

le transfert de l’arche à Jérusalem. Une ultime rédaction de sagesse

n’a pas modifié la structuration du Psautier.

Die Pachomianer-Regeln sind uns vollständig nur auf Latein in der

Übersetzung des Hieronymus überliefert. Nachdem H. Bacht schon

vor längerer Zeit den lateinischen Text in deutscher Übersetzung

publiziert hatte, werden sie hier estmals auch unter Berücksichtigung

der koptischen Regelteile auf Deutsch veröffentlicht und eingehend

analysiert. Dabei werden auch die Forschungsgeschichte und die

Wirkungsgeschichte ausführlich dargestellt. Das Regelganze ist zu

Recht mit Pachoms Namen verbunden, es ist seine originale Schöp-

fung und inspiriert von seinem Geist. Aber es verdankt sich nicht

einem bewussten literarisch-schriftstellerischen Prozess. Die Regeln

sind aus dem praktischen täglichen Leben hervorgegangen, und sie

sind auch nur in Rahmen einer lebendigen Autoritätsstruktur sinn-

voll. Sie sind noch ganz in die Kultur der Mündlichkeit eingebettet,

in der sie ihre Interpretation und ihre Anwendung fanden. Ob

Pachom die Regeln persönlich geschrieben hat, ob er sie diktiert

oder ob ein Bruder die mündlich erlassenen Regeln später aufge-

schrieben hat, ist nicht mehr zu entscheiden. Deutlich ist aber, dass

das Regelmaterial nach Stil und Inhalt auf die eine oder andere

Weise auf ihn selbst zurückzuführen ist. Zur ‘Gesetzgebung’ wurden

die Regeln erst durch den Rückgriff der Nachfolger Pachoms, die

ihre Mitbrüder beständig auf die ‘Anordnungen’ und ‘Gebote’ des

Ordensgründers verpflichteten. Diese Ordnungen lebten zwar

immer noch von der Autorität des ‘Vaters’, der sie erlassen hatte, der

aber nicht mehr als lebendes Beispiel unter ihnen war, sondern nur

noch posthum beschworen werden konnte. Dadurch erst bekamen

seine Regeln gewissermaßen einen kanonischen Rang.

THEODOTUS OF ANCYRA’S HOMILIES

A substantial proportion of surviving late-antique conciliar homilies

are by Theodotus, metropolitan bishop of Ancyra. Here presented

in English translation, they provide valuable evidence for an essential

and effective means of communication by which councils presented

and enforced themselves. The analysis relates their content to the

conciliar settings, considers the conventions of ancient rhetoric, and

reflects the reception of the texts, especially through collections of

conciliar documents. The book clarifies the regional parameters and

disputes over episcopal territorial authority in which Theodotus’

theology and pastoral activity developed. Both informed his overall

positive and constructive perspective on faith and the role of preach-

ers and bishops, promoting unity and cohesion. The analysis of

Theodotus’ involvement in the First Council of Ephesus, especially

in the techniques used to shape and preserve allegiances and to

defend a view or decision, contributes to an understanding of the

processes of identity formation, seeking agreement, and proclaiming

consensus, even when it had not been achieved.

This book brings together thirty separate studies of the complex

religious, communal and linguistic history of the Roman Near East

in the period from the conversion of the Emperor Constantine to

Christianity in CE 312 to the first Islamic invasion in CE 632. A

newly-written Epilogue, ‘Open Questions’, reviews the different

fields of study involved, and asks how far what we find helps to

understand the origins of Islam.

Pagan Greeks and Greek-speaking Christians, as well as Jews and

Samaritans using Hebrew and Aramaic, co-existed, as did a new

Christian community using Syriac, a branch of Aramaic. The com-

plex and extensive evidence for this multicultural world has had to

be approached in separate studies, while retaining a sense of com-

munal co-existence and mutual relationships. The papers have been

edited so as to appear in a consistent form, and are arranged in

groups intended to offer a coherent overall structure. It is hoped that

they will stimulate further work on this important phase in cultural

and religious history.

The Sixth North American Syriac Symposium brought together

scholars from across North America, Europe, the Middle East, and

India. Syriac Encounters offers twenty-four papers that were origi-

nally delivered at the Symposium, and represents a cross-section of

both the Symposium and the current state of Syriac studies more

broadly. Although most of the papers in the volume focus on the

late antique heyday of Syriac Christianity, several papers contribute

to the study of other, related fields, including Islamic studies and

Middle Eastern anthropology. The blossoming of Syriac studies

beyond church history and Semitic philology can be attributed to a

wider recognition of the Syriac language and culture as a bridge

linking (and fostering encounters between) Rome and Persia, Byzan-

tium and Baghdad, and Christianity and Islam.

Little is left that testifies to the life of the Church of the East in the

sixteenth to early nineteenth centuries. What we have, are manu-

scripts written by mostly clerical scribes for mostly clerical readers.

There is much that suggests, however, that these texts functioned in

a much wider circle than merely that of the learned.

This study takes the scribal production of texts, from the Holy

Scriptures to the first traces of popular writing, as its main source to

analyze the major changes that took place in the Church of the East

in the period. The most important of these was the introduction of

Western Catholicism, which ultimately led to the creation of two

separate hierarchies, today’s Chaldean Church and the Assyrian

Church of the East. How this community dealt with these monu-

mental changes, how that affected everything from the production

of texts to the fabric of society as a whole, and how that contributes

to our understanding of this Church’s modern day off-shoots, is the

topic of this study.

Cet ouvrage rassemble des textes sur les identités juives médiévales

en Catalogne et dans la couronne d’Aragon de la fin du XIIe siècle

au XVe siècle. Composés avant 2010, puis revus, ils déclinent les

caractères de la vie des juifs tels que la révèlent les sources latines

d’une variété exceptionnelle, parfois mises en perspective avec des

œuvres des auteurs juifs majeurs d’alors. L’interrogation porte sur

l’inscription dans l’espace, la place des conflits et de la violence, les

conversions au christianisme, les activités financières. Le but était de

rassembler des fragments d’existences, de partir des plus petits élé-

ments préhensibles, d’où par exemple l’utilisation de l’archéologie et

l’attention à la topographie. Un des nœuds de la réflexion concernait

le crédit, que l’état des sources conduit à développer, malgré une

conclusion affirmant qu’il est rarement l’activité essentielle de ces

hommes. Un des moyens pour dépasser le paradoxe a consisté en la

reconstitution des réseaux de relations. Dans les États où le judaïsme

et le droit hébraïque étaient publiquement reconnus, affrontée à des

bouleversements politiques et culturels, à des crises démographiques,

économiques et fiscales, une nouvelle société, complexe, se construi-

sit, parfois dans la controverse mais avec force, par des choix fami-

liaux ou des options philosophiques. Nous n’observons aucun repli

communautaire, mais plutôt une ouverture certaine à la société

englobante, qui ne signifie pas dilution ou abandon de la judéité.

Hadewijch, a Flemish beguine, who lived and wrote somewhere in

Brabant during the thirteenth century, has brought mystical litera-

ture as a whole to its highest point. Hadewijch’s teaching is most

accessible in her Letters, as there it is cast in a mould that succeeds

in touching the senses as well as the mind. In these mystical texts,

minne (“love”) is pivotal as regards both form and content – a dis-

tinction which Hadewijch largely overrides. As regards form, minne serves as a catchword which occurs everywhere, again and again,

drawing together different parts and sections. As regards content,

minne is the key to the mystical experience evoked by Hadewijch

and refers as much to the person who lives the mystical union (along

with the content of this feeling), as to the way in which this union

makes itself felt.

This edition of Hadewijch’s Letters includes the text of the 31 letters.

The English text is not intended to be a word-for-word translation

from the Middle Dutch, though it tries to keep closely to the orig-

inal. Hadewijch’s own words, phrases and turns of phrase are trans-

posed into the English text, especially when these are repeated and

do not become a stumbling block for the present-day reader. There

is a commentary to each Letter. However, the purpose in each case

is not to accumulate the erudition of specialists or to comment on

different interpretations. The aim is to encourage a slow and loving reading of the text itself, while trying to avoid any ready-made sum-

mary of what Hadewijch “has to say”. This edition also offers a new,

sound-based lay-out of the text which is intended to assist an appre-

ciation of the creativity of this gifted writer whose words and phras-

ing literally make music.

Hadewijch est sans doute la figure la plus brillante de la littérature

néerlandaise: avec elle, l’expression littéraire de la mystique chré-

tienne atteint un point culminant. Mais cette figure est en même

temps la plus mystérieuse: les historiens n’ont pas réussi à l’identi-

fier. Son nom est associé à quatre ouvrages très probablement écrits

en Brabant au cours du XIIIe siècle: Visions, Lettres, Poèmes stro-phiques (ou Chants) et Lettres rimées. La question de savoir où et

quand exactement a vécu cette béguine demeure une énigme.

Son enseignement mystique hors pair se coule dans une forme litté-

raire d’une complexité hautement raffinée. Écriture et oralité s’y

tressent de manière incomparablement musicale. Le maître-mot, le

évoquer aussi bien le sujet qui vit l’union mystique, que la manière

dont celle-ci est vécue et le sentiment qui l’accompagne.

Cette édition des Lettres de Hadewijch présente le texte des 31 lettres

et un commentaire sur chacune d’elles. Le texte français est la traduc-

tion de l’original moyen-néerlandais qui, sans être littérale, cherche à

serrer au plus près l’expression originale. On s’est attaché en particu-

lier à transporter fidèlement dans le texte français les mots, les phrases

et les tournures de phrases caractéristiques de Hadewijch; on n’hésite

pas à reproduire les répétitions, même lorsque la traduction en accroît

la lourdeur. La mise en page du texte s’efforce de faire ressortir le

rythme, les parallélismes, les effets d’échos de cette prose musicale. Un

commentaire accompagne chaque Lettre. On a volontairement écarté

l’appareil de l’érudition et les hypothèses d’interprétation. On ne

tente pas de reconstituer «le message» de Hadewijch. On se contente

d’inviter à une lecture simple et savoureuse du texte lui-même.

What is time, what is space and how do they relate to each other?

Even to pose these questions is to presume their existence, says

Meister Eckhart in his Commentary on Exodus, from where he then

develops his own view on the subject. Although far from having

become mainstream, his definition of time as presentiality and space

as non-categorical creativity had an enormous influence throughout

history, particularly in the arts. In this thematic volume the contrib-

utors explore the concepts of time and space in Eckhart’s thought,

situating these historically, philosophically, theologically, and cultur-

ally, whilst focusing on their interpretation in art works, particularly

by the American-Korean performance and video artist Taery Kim

(b. 1988) who refers explicitely to Eckhart. Kim advances the ques-

tions ‘what is time?’ and ‘what is space?’ as embodied questions in

her performances and video installations, thus exploring Eckhart and

inquiring into the ways we can think about our relationships, as

embodied subjects, to the vagrancies and bindings of time and space

now. Drawing together artists, art historians, theologians, and phi-

losophers, as well as building on existing scholarship, this volume

provides the first lengthy discussion of spatio-temporality in Eck-

hart’s writings, highlighting Eckhart’s relationship to performance

art, and the works of Kim.

may be important, this volume addresses specifically the relation

between liturgy and mystery. Many of the contributing authors rec-

ognise the bodied reality of mystery as crucial to the “health” of

liturgical relationship. The contributors acknowledge that neither

the “practitioner” as liturgist, nor the theologian alone can provide

the necessary “life-giving connections” that help mediate between

liturgy and mystery. Thus, the skills and knowledge from various

liturgical traditions and denominations are utilised to explore:

(1) the gospels and Christ event, (2) the ongoing process of tradition

through verbal and non-verbal means, (3) the transparency of mys-

television sparked fierce debates on religious rituals engaged in via

questions emerging in the enormous spread of new network media

and the impact of digitization on our culture. Can there be such a

The Second Vatican Council was the most important event in the

Roman Catholic Church in the twentieth century. In line with Pope

John XXIII’s desire for aggiornamento it searched for ways to enable

the Church to meet the challenges of the times and thus prepare a

future for Christian faith and life. This search for renewal met with

opposition during the Council and its reception process up to the

current day.

In this volume authors known for their research on and familiarity

with the Council’s history and its reception reflect on the (non-)

reception of Vatican II in the Roman Catholic Church. Paying

attention to both the wishes of the majority of the Council fathers

and the often blocked implementation of their decisions during the

post-Vatican II period, they make clear that the freedom of speech

that existed during the Council soon was put aside, partly because

those who where opposed to the conciliar developments remained

in charge after the Council.

At the same time, the contributors to this volume are of the opinion

that Vatican II and its texts continue to offer much inspiration for

the life of the faithful today. According to Leo Declerck, Etienne

Fouilloux, Peter Hünermann, Joseph Komonchak, Mathijs Lamberigts,

Nicholas Lash, Gilles Routhier, and Christoph Theobald, “Gaud-

ium et spes” thus continue to prevail over grief and anxiety, too

often used as instruments for a ‘revision’ of Vatican II.

This book offers both keen insights into the history of the Council

and its intuitions, and the contested but still needed implementation

of it.

Cet inventaire des archives de la ‘Conférence catholique pour les

questions œcuméniques’ (1952-1963) – confié par le cardinal

Willebrands, son co-fondateur et secrétaire, au Monastère de Che-

vetogne – permettra aux chercheurs de mieux connaître une étape

vitale dans l’histoire de la participation de l’Église catholique au

mouvement œcuménique. L’érection et les activités de la CCQŒ

constituent sans doute une des initiatives les plus importantes du

côté catholique avant le concile pour entamer le dialogue œcumé-

nique avec les autres Églises, surtout avec le monde du protestan-

tisme. Après quelques contacts préliminaires, Willebrands et Thijssen

ont réuni, en 1952, à Fribourg (en Suisse) un groupe international

de théologiens et hommes d’Église qui étaient sensibilisés au drame

de la division des Églises. Neuf réunions se sont succédées entre

1952 et 1963 et ont rassemblé jusqu’à 70 personnes. Dans ces réu-

nions Willebrands et le Comité directeur ont cherché à étudier des

thèmes fondamentaux pour le rapprochement œcuménique. De

plus, le Comité directeur a élaboré en 1959 une Note importante

à l’occasion de l’annonce du Concile. Les archives nous donnent

ainsi des renseignements précieux sur l’évolution de l’esprit œcumé-

nique tant du côté catholique que du côté du Conseil Œcuménique

des Églises. L’inventaire mentionne pour chaque document le titre,

l’auteur, la langue, la date et le nombre des pages. Pour une grande

partie de la correspondance, un bref résumé des lettres a été ajouté.

Un index onomastique conclut l’ouvrage.

conviction fondamentale gît au cœur du présent ouvrage issu d’une

étude de l’imposante somme de Joseph Moingt – Dieu qui vient à l’homme. Deux éléments essentiels de la pensée de Moingt ont guidé

l’auteur vers cette conclusion: son concept d’«humanisme évangé-

lique» et son rapport critique à la tradition. Notre hypothèse sou-

tient que ces deux facteurs contribuent à retrouver les intuitions de

foi sous-jacentes au discours dogmatique traditionnel et qu’ils ins-

crivent l’acte théologique dans la raison commune en respectant

mieux l’économie de l’Incarnation. L’hypothèse est doublement

féconde. Elle fait émerger une raison interne à l’acte de croire chré-

tien qui lie le principe d’une «foi critique» et celui d’une «théologie

confessante», et elle conforte la pleine appartenance de la théolo-

gie aux sciences dites «humaines» comme science herméneutique de

l’acte de foi.

pas de la question anthropologique une idée qui ait de l’unité. Il est

urgent – et théologiquement opportun – de chercher à dégager

celle-ci. Le présent travail voudrait y contribuer. Après une longue

Introduction historique sur les principaux courants anthropolo-

giques dans la pensée du XXe siècle, le livre comprend quatre parties

systématiques. La première traite du rapport de l’homme au monde

(y compris le contraste entre l’homme et l’animal). La deuxième

partie considère le moi, le soi, la conscience, et la capacité humaine

de connaître, de vouloir, d’agir (notamment au niveau moral). La

troisième partie, axée sur l’essence de l’homme, explore la notion

d’âme, le thème de l’esprit, la problématique du corps, la différence

de l’individu et de la personne. La quatrième partie, dont le fil

conducteur est le rapport aux autres et à l’Autre, étudie la relation

interpersonnelle, le rapport de l’homme et de la société, la dimen-

sion historique, la visée de l’Absolu à travers l’art, la philosophie et

la religion. L’Épilogue indique l’arrière-plan théologique et caracté-

rise l’approche de l’ouvrage. Dans de longues notes, le livre tient

particulièrement compte de l’apport hégélien (théorie de l’âme, de

la conscience, de la conscience de soi, de la raison, de l’esprit). En

langue française, on ne trouve guère l’équivalent de la synthèse –

vaste et précise – ici proposée.

with the sciences with a particular focus on how the nature of ethics

is understood through this dialogue. Its purpose is to provide a the-

ological appreciation of the nature of ethics which also takes seri-

ously evolutionary accounts of how ethics came to be. It argues that

such a theological metaethic can be interpreted as hopeful and opti-

mistic given the apparent evolution of the moral from the amoral.

This work hinges on two different but intertwined levels. One is the

level of ethical systems: a particular understanding of Western

Christian ethics. This level is framed by another, broader level of

think and act differently than the official Church teaching, but they

to respond by what can be called an ‘ethics of mercy’, by meeting

people where they are and helping them to grow towards the fullness

of life and love. Such a pastoral and educational ethics of growth

should dare to stand within the tension between what is desirable

and what is attainable, without surrendering the ‘pro-vocative’ idea

of conjugal covenant as the basis for the family. Mercy is needed not

only after ethics but in ethics. In harmony with Pope Francis’s plea

for a ‘gospel of mercy’, this book seeks a middle way between mer-

ciless rigourism and relativising subjectivism. It proposes an ethics

of redemption that accompanies people on their way to meaningful

Caring is a moral practice, i.e. a practice in which moral goods are

realized. This is one of the critical insights of the ethics of care. The

idea that goods are also sacrificed in caregiving, however, is less

accepted or downright rejected. Starting off with real life stories,

stories from literature and films, this book shows that caregiving

entails sacrifices even to the extent of sacrificing the self.

This study argues that concepts surrounding care and sacrifice need

to be revised and makes proposals for re-conceptualizing the sub-

ject’s identity, the intersubjective relation, the socio-political com-

munity, and the role of meaning. Using an interdisciplinary

in ethics courses. It focuses in particular on mental healthcare, sup-

La spiritualité bernardine et la fin’amor se rejoignent en de nom-

breux points, particulièrement dans l’exercice des vertus et le rejet

des vices. La pratique de l’humilité et le renoncement à l’orgueil,

ainsi que la question de l’accord des volontés, sont constants dans

les deux expressions d’un amour qui doit conduire au perfectionne-

ment des protagonistes humains, ainsi qu’à une joie ineffable. Néan-

moins, le cheminement spirituel de Bernard de Clairvaux est par-

semé de revirements et de doutes, tandis que les troubadours se

révoltent contre Amour, entité universelle, au pouvoir quasi absolu.

Dans les deux cas, il ne s’agit pas de l’expression d’un amour fou,

balayant les contraintes sociales. Les excès en sont limités par la

raison, constitutive de l’âme humaine chez Bernard, et la mezura des

poètes. Ce qui n’exclut pas l’expression du désir, désir de Dieu ou

désir de la dame. Les troubadours ont aussi chanté la seule satisfac-

tion des sens.

Ce volume porte sur la traduction arabo-latine attribuée à Guillaume

de Luna du commentaire moyen d’Averroès sur l’Isagoge. Peu citée

semble-t-il au Moyen Âge, un peu plus à la Renaissance, cette tra-

duction est conservée par quatre manuscrits; s’y ajoutent douze édi-

tions des XVe et XVIe siècles. L’original arabe de la traduction étant

perdu, l’édition n’a pu être accompagnée ni d’un apparat comparatif

latino-arabe ni de lexiques rendant compte des équivalences arabo-

latines ou latino-arabes. Mais dans les notes complétant l’apparat des

variantes, fréquents sont les renvois: 1. à la version arabe de l’Isagoge due à Abū ‘Uthmān al-Dimashqī; 2. à la traduction arabo-hébraïque

du même commentaire d’Averroès par Jacob Anatoli. Grâce à cette

traduction de Jacob Anatoli et à la version arabe de l’Isagoge, il est

souvent possible de supposer ce qu’a dû être le texte arabe du com-

mentaire d’Averroès traduit par Guillaume de Luna.

Le présent ouvrage propose une étude systématique de la conception

de la condition humaine contenue dans Condition de l’homme moderne de H. Arendt. Il en éclaire l’orientation, à la fois par rapport

à la tradition ancienne et classique de la philosophie et par rapport

au contexte immédiat de la phénoménologie et de l’existentialisme

contemporains. Il met en évidence une structure de la condition

humaine, un agencement des différentes conditions qui la com-

posent et l’accent mis par Arendt sur un pluriel de conditions de

base plus que sur les traits généraux habituellement mis en avant (la

finitude, la mortalité). Outre la triade bien connue des trois activités

fondamentales, le travail, l’œuvre, l’action, il explicite une triade

d’activités mentales, l’intelligence, la connaissance et la pensée.

Il examine le statut de la pensée dans la condition humaine et le

paradoxe de sa capacité de retrait par rapport à elle. La conception

arendtienne de la condition humaine, non dépassée à ce jour, est une

référence capitale pour l’humanité, aujourd’hui inquiète de l’avenir

de son monde. La version allemande du livre de Arendt, remaniée

par rapport à l’édition anglaise originale, est prise en compte.

The reign of Husraw I Anosirwan / Chosroes (531-579), the most

remarkable one during the Sasanian dynasty, was pivotal in the his-

tory of Iran. During that period, far-reaching projects to restructure

the state affected all strata of society, royal power was strengthened

and the country experienced significant cultural development. No

major scientific gathering was devoted to this subject, and here are

published the proceedings of a symposium organized in Paris. Its

aim was to bring together international scholars from various fields

who work on often difficult-to-access or hitherto unpublished source

material in several languages. The resulting interactions and inter-

secting perspectives help to piece together many facets of that reign,

thus providing a rich contribution to the history of the East in the

6th century.

The book includes seven studies that use historiographical and phil-

ological methods to explore the historical and religious aspects of

Zoroastrian cosmogony and eschatology. It undertakes a close read-

ing of Middle Persian literature to identify and illustrate specific

aspects of this religious system, such as the symmetry between the

beginning and the end of the world. The author reads the histori-

ography of Iranian studies, paying special attention to the French

scholarship on this topic, in order to show how the modern history

of religions transformed Christian theological concepts in its analysis

of the Zoroastrian religion. The Addenda include several unpub-

lished documents, relevant for the history of Zoroastrian studies in

France.

This book is a study of the pre-Islamic passages of Abu Hanifa

Ahmad ibn Dawud ibn Wanand Dinawari’s Kitab al-Akhbar al-Ti-wal. It is intended for scholars of Late Antiquity. Special emphasis

is placed on Dinawari’s exposition of the rule of the Sasanian

dynasty and questions relating to the mysterious Khudaynama tradi-

tion which are intimately connected with it. Beginning with a dis-

cussion of Dinawari and his work, the book moves into a discussion

of indigenous Iranian historiography. Speculation on the sources of

Kitab al-Akhbar al-Tiwal follows, and the historiographical investi-

gation of the most substantial portion of Kitab al-Akhbar al-Tiwal’s notices on the Sasanian dynasty comes next. The findings of the

book are set out in a narrative of Sasanian history at the end. This

book was written with one main question in mind: what does Dina-

wari’s Kitab al-Akhbar al-Tiwal have to say about pre-Islamic Ira-

nian history? A host of other questions arose immediately: who was

Dinawari; when did he live; what did he do; how was his work

perceived by others; where did Dinawari get his information and

how did he present it; is Dinawari’s information reliable?

Istanbul stands at a unique conjunction of an inland sea with a long

maritime inlet, and a winding, turbulent maritime strait that links

two seas and separates two continents. These topographical features

have greatly facilitated maritime trade, for which the city has had an

enormous harbor capacity. Istanbul’s relationship with fresh water

is also idiosyncratic: its dearth meant that fresh water for consump-

tion had to be channeled, stored, and distributed with the help of

long-distance aqueducts, open-air reservoirs and cisterns. The natu-

ral environment combined with the norms of local societies created

a culture of water that has constituted an important part of Istan-

bul’s identity. Various aspects of it are explored in this volume, the

outcome of a symposium organized by Koç University’s Research

Center for Anatolian Civilizations. The eleven essays by leading

scholars present research findings from the archaeological excava-

tions at Yenikapi, examine the distribution and consumption of

water in Byzantine times as well as the social impact of water in the

Ottoman era, and offer reflections on the aesthetics of water.

Ancient Chorasmia was a polity which belonged to the Indo-Iranian

cultural koiné of Central Asia. It was situated at the northern bor-

ders of these territories surrounded by deserts, thus relatively isolated

as an “oasis” during its long history. After the pioneering work of

Soviet archaeologist S.P. Tolstov and colleagues in the region (cor-

respondent with parts of today’s Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan), the

polity has been neglected and since then the idea of its cultural

isolation in the frame of Central Asian antiquity acknowledged by

scholars. But the history of this ancient Persian “nation” is a history

of exchanges and interrelations, closely related with the social and

cultural development of the whole Central Asian region and of the

Eurasian Steppes. This book is centred on the study of these external

relations and considers their impact on the inner development of the

polity during a time span of ca. six centuries. The chosen timeframe

corresponds with the period beginning with the emergence of true

settled civilisation in Ancient Chorasmia – with its integration in

the Achaemenid sphere of influence – and ends with the expansion

of the Kushan Empire in Central Asia – after the advance of the

Hellenistic civilisation. This volume presents new hypotheses on

the historical position of Chorasmia within Central Asia, challeng-

ing the current established chronology which needed to be revisited

in the light of the most recent scholarly and field works on the

subject.

This volume is a revised version of a doctoral dissertation under-

taken at The University of Sydney. It examines the florescene of

urban society during the mid to late Third Millennium BCE in

the northern Levant, focusing on the largely unexplored region of

the upper Orontes Valley, specifically the site of Tell Nebi Mend,

ancient Qadesh (on the Orontes). This work seeks to explore the

role and significance of ‘small’ regional sites during the Early Bronze

Age IV, by presenting a detailed stratigraphic and ceramic analysis

of the Tell Nebi Mend sequence from the mid Third Millennium

(Early Bronze Age III) through the early Second Millennium BCE

(Middle Bronze Age I). One of the principal aims of this work is to

construct a detailed ceramic typology for Tell Nebi Mend and the

upper Orontes during the late Third Millennium BCE. This strati-

graphically anchored assemblage was designed as a foil for the more

intensively investigated ‘mega-site’ sequences of the region, such as

Ebla and Hama. It was also designed to explore and examine

the development and evolution of regional ceramic horizons and the

growth of inter-site interaction that occurred during the later Early

Bronze Age. Although this work will not be the last word on studies

of the EB IV, the ceramic and stratigraphic information presented

sheds new and important light on many of the key research issues

that surround the Early Bronze Age IV, such as the nature of the

Early Bronze Age III-IV transition and the regional response to

the ‘collapse’ of the Early Bronze Age urban system ca. 2000 BCE.

This monograph presents the final excavation report of the Iron Age

fortress at Tell Qudadi (Tell esh-Shuna) situated on the northern

bank of the Yarkon river estuary in the central coast of Israel. The

main excavations were conducted in 1937-38 and were published in

a very preliminary form, dating the first phase of the fortress to the

10th or 9th century BC, whereas the second phase, attributed by

the excavators to the northern Israelite kingdom, was ascribed to the

latter part of the 9th century BC until 732 BC, when it was

destroyed during the military campaign led by Tiglath-pileser III.

Such a reconstruction of events was unreservedly accepted by other

scholars. The present authors offer a new chronological scheme for

two architectural phases of this impressive Iron Age fortress, suggest-

ing a new chronological affiliation of the fortress to the period

between the second half of the 8th and first half of the 7th centuries

BC. Accordingly, the site formed part of the sophisticated network

that was created on behalf of the Neo-Assyrian rule. The study of

the site’s Iron Age IIB pottery assemblages enables a reassessment

of a number of contested chronological issues in a wider Mediterra-

nean setting.

Gods, kings and merchants, a way of designating religion, politics

and the economy: three spheres which in the modern world are

quite distinct, even if they do interact constantly. The aim of this

book is to show that their boundaries were far more fluid in the

Mesopotamian civilisation: gods could act as money lenders, kings

could invoke divine will to refuse extradiction, the dead could serve

as a reference for how the living should behave, and wealthy mer-

chants could live in residences modelled on those of kings... This

civilisation preceded the “Greek miracle” which Jean-Pierre Vernant

has quite correctly defined as a “process of change which led to the

emergence, as distinct areas, of the blueprints for the economy, pol-

itics, law, art, science, ethics, and philosophy”. In a direct continu-

ation of his earlier book published in 2010, Writing, Law, and King-ship in Old Babylonian Mesopotamia, D. Charpin here examines in

greater depth the situation which existed in Mesopotamia in the first

half of the second millennium BC, using texts discovered in numer-

ous archives throughout the entire Near East, especially those found

at Mari eighty years ago.

Throughout history people have marvelled at the pyramids, from the

elemental beauty of the Step Pyramid of Djoser to the monumental

scale and engineering achievement of the Great Pyramid in Giza.

The knowledge needed to build such grand monuments was vast,

but not acquired overnight. The precursors to the pyramids, the

massive mud brick tombs of the First and Second Dynasties, reveal

a high degree of proficiency, ingenuity and capability by the archi-

tects, engineers and builders of that time. These mud brick struc-

tures, built almost five centuries before the Giza pyramids, reveal a

structured and well organised society with well developed construc-

tion and management skills. In fact, the construction time and

labour force requirements in these earlier structures were efficient

and small in comparison to ventures in the proceeding Dynasties.

It is through these structures – and the development of the skills and

diversity of industries required to sustain the building of them – that

the foundation for the economic and social development of future

generations and the dawn of large scale stone construction was laid.

costumes and textiles have been among the least understood of the

major artistic achievements of the Minoan civilization.

Since ancient Aegean textiles and garments have not survived, the

study collects, analyzes and compiles a typology of the corpus of

garments represented in sculpture, frescoes and glyptic to glean evi-

dence for construction. It further considers the manufacturing tech-

niques of extant Egyptian clothes, comparable images of ancient

Near Eastern garments, textile manufacture on the warp-weighted

loom, and dress documented in Mycenaean Linear B, Greek and

Near Eastern texts. The combined evidence is buttressed by experi-

ments in replicating Aegean and related Near Eastern garments as

well as the weave structures of patterned cloths and bands. The

replicated clothes are arranged on live models who assume the vari-

ous positions of the clothed figures in the frescoes and sculptures

they imitate, thereby bringing the ancient figures to life.

This all inclusive study not only illuminates every aspect of Aegean

costume, but the resultant understanding of dress and the way it

drapes on the body has led to new restorations of the missing parts

of fragmentary garments on figural sculptures and wall paintings.

topics of the contributions deal with the development and interna-

tionalisation of domestic architecture in the Mediterranean,

ious theories, methods and evidence to investigate the characteristics

of and change in social space and dynamics in both the urban and

time frame, the aim of the conference and these papers is diachronic,

incorporating data from around the entire region and ranging

broadly across the 1st millennium BCE to Late Antiquity. In so

doing, regional characteristics can be highlighted but also compared

with contemporary developments throughout the region and long-

term trends, both local and again regional, can be identified. The

volume illustrates different priorities in the study of housing and

habitat that hopefully will prove stimulating to all researchers con-

logical analysis of the sanctuary site at Pessinus. Dr Angelo Verlinde

been excavated and registered in the period 1967-2008. The dis-

from the modest early Phrygian dwellings, over the Hellenistic

‘citadel’ and ‘gymnasium’, to the Augustan theatre-temple and its

Byzantine afterlife. The emphasis lays on Roman imperial architec-

ture in Asia Minor, and especially on the mathematical and stylistic

design principles of temples and their Roman influences. The pro-

cess of reconstruction is elaborated beyond the traditional showcase-

element towards the tentative elucidation of ancient design princi-

History is a reality that can be observed only through the traces it

has left. Some are words and images (on parchment, papyrus, stone

or any other bearer) conveying us the emotions and reflections of

people in the past. Others are the scars and leftovers of human lives

and actions, scattered in the landscape, buried or sunk under water.

Historians and archaeologists are experts in restoring the damage

done to a body of evidence by time or human manipulation. We are

trained empiricists, wont to look down and think bottom-up. Eco-

nomic history, however, requires us to do more: we need to look

up. Economics is about explaining patterns in human interaction by

detecting its causes and effects. However good our restored data are,

the patterns they reveal will always be too fragmented and have too

many loose ends to unveil reality. Economic history is always an act

of imagination. The challenge is to ensure that it does not become

an insubstantial pageant. Theories, models and comparative history

help us to do that. They are explanatory frames and tools, showing

the consequences of our assumptions and suggesting solutions to fill

in the gaps. They do not diminish the need for empirical research

methods. The output of any model depends on the reliability of its

input data. This book discusses theories and models we believe are

useful in economic history, but it also invites the reader to look at

methods (both new and traditional) to ensure that input data are

reliable, and offers case studies showing what can be done.

laquelle la souffrance physique occupe une place considérable. La

présente étude, à travers l’examen des théories et des représentations

du dolor physique dans l’œuvre philosophique de Sénèque, se pro-

pose de résoudre ce paradoxe apparent, et de déterminer précisément

les fonctions d’un tel emploi. Après avoir défini la notion de dolor physique, elle démontre l’omniprésence du motif du corps souffrant

et en dégage les raisons contextuelles. Elle envisage en outre la

dimension médicale des représentations de la souffrance, afin de

définir le niveau des connaissances techniques du philosophe et l’ori-

gine des théories pathologiques et thérapeutiques qui affleurent dans

During the Late Middle Ages a unique type of ‘mixed media’ recy-

cled and remnant art arose in houses of religious women in the Low

Countries: Enclosed Gardens. These are retables, sometimes with

painted side panels, the central section filled not only with narrative

sculpture, but also with all sorts of trinkets and hand-worked tex-

tiles. Adornments include relics, wax medallions, gemstones set in

silver, pilgrimage souvenirs, parchment banderoles, flowers made

from textiles with silk thread, semi-precious stones, pearls and

quilling (a decorative technique using rolled paper). The ensemble

is an impressive and one-of-a-kind display and presents as an intox-

icating garden. In this essay the exceptional heritage of such Enclosed

Gardens is interpreted from a range of approaches. The Enclosed

Garden is studied as a symbol of paradise and mystical union, as the

sanctuary of interiority, as the sublimation of the sensorium (in par-

ticular the sense of smell), as a typical gendered product, and as a

centre of psycho-energetic creative processes.

In this volume on the comparative study of nobility, historians, soci-

ologists and anthropologists focus on the different processes of trans-

formation that aristocratic elites in Europe went through during the

twentieth century. Readers will learn about nobles in northern

Europe (Sweden and Finland), southern Europe (Italy), western

Europe (France, Belgium, the Netherlands) and central Europe

(Germany, Austria, Poland and Hungary). However, because of the

comparative structure of the volume, readers will also sometimes

encounter the nobility in Britain, Russia and the Baltic areas. The

authors discuss questions like: how did noble men and women cope

with the rise of totalitarian regimes and with the dramatic periods

of the Second World War and the Cold War? What was the impact

of the Fall of the Berlin Wall? And how did nobles react to the loss

of political and economic privileges? In spite of all the variety and

heterogeneity in wealth, power, prestige, and public visibility of

these nobilities, some remarkable general trends and patterns emerge

from the articles. The fourteen contributions show how and why

relatively many nobles succeeded in staying on top or in transform-

ing political and economic capital into cultural and symbolic

capital.

Si Antoine Galland (1646-1715) doit d’être passé à la postérité à sa

“traduction” des Mille et une nuits, il n’en était pas moins avant tout

un savant versé tant en numismatique qu’en orientalisme. Pour sou-

tenir sa mémoire, il prit note, dès son adolescence, semble-t-il, mais

peut-être pas de manière continue, des événements du jour qui le

concernaient de près ou de loin. Ce journal, dont seuls quelques

volumes nous sont parvenus, concerne deux périodes: les années

1672-1673, époque où il se trouvait à Constantinople, et les années

1708-1715, années qui correspondent à la fin de sa vie, lorsqu’il

vivait à Paris. Cette dernière période est indubitablement une des

plus riches sur le plan professionnel puisqu’elle voit A. Galland accé-

der à la plus haute fonction qu’il pouvait espérer jamais atteindre:

la chaire de langue arabe au Collège royal (1709). Le journal de ces

années constitue donc une source de première importance tant pour

retracer les dernières années de la vie de ce savant digne représentant

de la République des Lettres, qui nous fait part consciencieusement

du contenu des séances bi-hebdomadaires de la vénérable Académie

royale des inscriptions, que pour reconstruire son réseau de corres-

pondants, d’amis, de collègues dans ce Siècle des Lumières qui est

en train de se dessiner.

Alors que notre époque semble ne laisser aucune place au secret, il

est difficile d’imaginer quelle fut son importance dans la pensée et

la pratique sous l’Ancien Régime. Le présent volume, issu d’un col-

loque international qui s’est tenu à Reims, examine ce que fut le

secret durant les XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles, tout en ouvrant l’étude à

des textes originels comme le Roman du Graal, à la période roman-

tique avec Senancour, Chateaubriand et Stendhal, voire au

XXe siècle. Les contributions déclinent les diverses formes du secret:

discrétion, dissimulation, énigme, mystère, implicite, clandestinité,

espionnage. Dans la première partie, elles touchent à l’anthropologie

et au rapport qu’entretiennent le politique et la morale. Une esthé-

tique du secret s’affirme quand les poètes, les peintres et les drama-

turges sollicitent la participation du spectateur. Le «plaisir secret» se

charge alors de valeur positive.

La seconde partie du volume porte sur les fictions. Le roman de cette

époque élabore des dispositifs ingénieux pour exprimer ce qui est à

la fois montré et caché. Il circonscrit le secret dans son ambiguïté,

sans pouvoir le dire vraiment. Quel que soit son intérêt au Grand

Siècle, le secret d’amour tend à se vider de son contenu pour mieux

éclairer les processus de communication. Le roman du siècle suivant

hésite entre la dissimulation et la transparence; avec le conte, il use

de l’énigme et de la mystification pour mener un combat idéolo-

gique et pour interroger l’inconscient jusque dans l’érotisme et l’in-

ceste. Ainsi la poétique du secret qui se développe jusqu’au seuil du

XIXe siècle permet de repenser plus largement le rapport du lecteur

à la production littéraire.

This book documents what newspapers, literary journals and private

individuals in Holland wrote about Voltaire between 1746 and

1778. Like elsewhere in Europe, he was admired for his literary

genius but detested by orthodox Christians for his disrespect of

revealed religion. In this book these views are represented by Gerard

Roos, the translator of Zadig, Socrate and L’Homme aux 40 écus, and

the reverend Petrus Hofstede. For Jean Rousset de Missy, the editor

of Voltariana and Les Mensonges imprimés, Voltaire was also a selfish

cheat who did not keep his promises to publishers. In L’Epilogueur moderne Rousset frequently attacked him in connection with Abrégé de l’histoire universelle by Jean Neaulme. Among the documents dis-

covered while working on this book are the letter Voltaire wrote to

the grand pensionary of Holland after the public burning of his

Dictionnaire philosophique, and a second review of Oeuvres de Mau-pertuis. The book concludes with a bibliography of Voltaire transla-

tions into Dutch, many of them published in literary journals.

Le Cours de linguistique générale (CLG) de Ferdinand de Saussure

(1857-1913), publié en 1916, est à l’origine d’une vaste vague struc-

turaliste en sciences humaines. L’édition posthume, réalisée par

Charles Bally et Albert Sechehaye, est basée sur les trois cours de

linguistique générale que Saussure a donnés à l’Université de Genève

entre 1907 et 1911. L’exégèse de la pensée linguistique de Saussure,

qui dans les dernières décennies s’est constituée en un domaine de

haute spécialisation philologique, avait déjà abouti au constat d’un

important effort de reconstruction systématisante et homogénéisante

de la part des deux éditeurs, mais n’était pas parvenue à préciser la

nature de «l’avant-texte» sous-tendant l’édition définitive. Or, cet

«avant-texte», ou du moins un jalon crucial dans son élaboration,

est la «collation» effectuée par Albert Sechehaye et revue par Charles

Bally; ce texte de travail, qui est à la base de l’édition du CLG, est

conservé comme manuscrit à la Bibliothèque de Genève. C’est le

texte de la «Collation Sechehaye» qui est publié ici en facsimilé et

en transcription. L’édition rigoureusement philologique, en confor-

mité avec les principes de la «génétique des textes», est précédée

d’une longue introduction historique, retraçant la genèse du CLG.

Ce volume IV de la série Le nom des langues créée par A. Tabouret-

Keller porte sur la nomination des langues romanes. En abordant

dans le cadre d’un même phylum les processus de nomination – qui

manifestent en réalité, comme il a été plus que démontré dans les

volumes précédents, des processus de création et d’élaboration des

langues –, ce volume pose la question des héritages du latin et d’une

éventuelle cohérence millénaire. On ne prétend cependant pas ici

résoudre cette question.

Envisagé dans des profondeurs diachroniques diverses, un même

questionnement principal traverse les différents cas: quel est le rap-

port de la nomination à l’existence même des langues, c’est-à-dire à

leur accession à l’existence reconnue socialement et politiquement?

Les études de cas portent sur le français d’Acadie, le castrapo de

Galice, le francoprovençal, le cajun de Louisiane, le genovese, le cata-lan, le gallo et le picard. Cette simple énumération suggère assez le

caractère novateur de la problématique de la nomination — et pas

seulement du ‘nom des langues’: sans s’arrêter à une nomenclature

consensuelle des savants, plutôt peu évolutive, les chercheurs

observent ici, en sociolinguistes autant qu’en philologues, des pro-

cessus créatifs nombreux et multiformes, en tout cas complexes par

la récurrence des conceptions sur les pratiques.

Toutes ces variétés illustrent que l’individuation linguistique, dont

la nomination est un moyen ou un aboutissement, met en cause des

données anthropologiques fondamentales et tout le jeu des réalités

sociales, politiques et des débats idéologiques au sens le plus large.

L’indonésien (bahasa Indonesia) est la langue la plus parlée en Asie

du Sud-Est, avec au moins 220 millions de locuteurs en Indonésie

(250 millions d’habitants). Langue nationale depuis l’indépendance

de 1945, l’indonésien était depuis des siècles la lingua franca de

l’archipel, sous le nom de malais. L’indonésien est aujourd’hui la

langue officielle de la République d’Indonésie; c’est la langue des

médias, de l’enseignement, des échanges entre les habitants des

innombrables îles, puisque l’Indonésie compte aussi plus de 600 lan-

gues régionales. Le présent ouvrage a pour objectif de permettre au

lecteur, même sans formation en linguistique, d’appréhender les

caractéristiques essentielles de l’indonésien: brève histoire de la

langue, phonétique et phonologie, lexique, syntaxe. Il s’agit d’une

description générale, nécessairement partielle, mais qui ne laisse de

côté aucun fait saillant, et privilégie le traitement des phénomènes

qui diffèrent des langues indo-européennes. Ainsi, en indonésien, la

dérivation lexicale (formation de mots au moyen d’affixes et/ou

réduplication) est particulièrement productive. Le système des voix

est également plus riche que l’opposition actif-passif du français.

Nous avons éludé tout cadre théorique qui pourrait rendre la lecture

ardue. Les linguistes trouveront cependant dans ce panorama de

l’indonésien des repères familiers, et sauront interpréter les phéno-

mènes décrits selon leur approche théorique favorite.

le tunumiisut, dialecte inuit. La parole du conteur, telle qu’elle s’ex-

notre empathie.

What can we learn about the narrative art of the East Greenland Inuit

from just a few tales recalling the traditional way of life? How do the

storytellers capture and hold their audience’s attention? How do

rhythm, tone of voice, gesture, mimicry and phrases repeated over and

again make an impression on the listeners and enthrall them? The

tales collected here, told by a renowned East Greenlandic storyteller

in the Tunumiisut dialect of Inuit, give us some valuable clues to

answer these questions. His delivery and gestures bring his characters

to life as he fires the spirit of a now disappearing culture. His words

as we can hear them on the accompanying video recording are almost

musical. They ring in our minds, bring the depicted material world

closer, play on our feelings, and put us in tune with the characters.
