ASSEMBLY 2018 Order of Worship— Spiritual Growth and Songs

Note from the Assembly Team:

Because we believe the Holy Spirit walks with us every step of the way, instead of one Bible Study leader, we created a new role called a “Journey Guide,” who was our spiritual guide for the whole weekend’s journey together. We were honored to be led by the co-writer, Executive for Spiritual Growth Alisha Gordon.

Below is the overall order of programming with all spiritual growth litanies and Bible study with our Journey Guide, including songs chosen to enhance the liturgical experience. Each service opened with Gathering Songs found in the PowerPoints.

The PowerPoints and videos can be downloaded or linked from the Assembly Resources page. Look for the all-caps print saying “REFER TO VIDEO” to know when to go to those links.

We have also added a Songbook Resource List to go with the Scripture and Songbook Companion for Assembly. This Songbook list enables you to purchase books that will have the full accompaniment for each song. Separate Document

Our scriptural reflection for this Assembly was the Journey of Mary, mother of Jesus. We have included videos of the special performing arts segments welcoming talented female writers, actresses and tap dancers, who brought life to our understanding of Mary in a very contemporary and inspirational way. Sometimes these segments have introductions and sometimes not. We offer you the choice on the Video Download page, of using them all together or separately.

Notes: Please see notes in red for explanations on how you should use certain segments. Different cultures and traditions of the wonderful United Methodist Women in our midst need special care to be honored in an authentic way.

We encourage each member to bring an Assembly Report including the Highlights Video to your local church ending with the invitation to join us in Orlando, Florida in 2022.

Friday Morning, Community Gathering—CALLED TO BOLD

“We Assemble”This opening, “We Assemble” should be recited like a Spoken Word Poetry Jam piece. Find a young or experienced woman in your midst who might love to bring her own style and energy to communicate this piece.

We assemble because we mustWe are put together, piece by piecePart by part, heart by heartWe gather, collect, congregate and conveneWe meet and rally, we construct and buildBecause we must

We are the glue, the joint, the adhesive that holds tightlyWhen pulled at the seams of our very beingsThe cords that bind us up closely when darkness makes its way through the cracksWe assemble because we mustBecause there are women, youth and children depending on us

Depending on our ability to come togetherRelying on us to see God in the darknessWaiting on bold, courageous womenExpecting us to transcend and assemble like pieces of a puzzle

We assemble to hold 150 years of bold faith, bold hope, bold love, bold action! We assemble because if we do not, may the work of centuries of women be washed away…

So; We assembleWe assemble because we mustWe assemble because we have no other choiceWe assemble for themWe assemble for the unheardWe assemble for the unseenWe assemble for the voiceless

We assemble for Mary, Martha, Ruth, Bathsheba, Rahab and Jepthah’s daughter

We assemble for you, for me, for her, for him, for them, for usWe assemble because we must.

And together we say:

ALL: “We assemble because we must...in the bold image of God.”

Journey Guide:Welcome! My name is Journey Guide Gordon and for these next days together, I’ll be guiding us through this holy journey that we call the General Assembly of United Methodist Women, “The Power of Bold.”

Throughout each of our community gatherings, we’ll be exploring who we are as United Methodist Women, why scripture calls us to gather as women of faith, what work drives our passion for mission around the world, and how we turn our faith, love and hope into bold action. We will follow the story of Mary, the mother of Jesus, her bold response to God’s call and how those dreams lead to costly but rewarding ministry. We, too, are bold women of God! Our commitment to bold work and justice leads us to holistic care for ourselves, our sisters and all of creation.

Bold choices bring change, bold choices reflect our Wesleyan values of personal piety and social holiness. What a wonderful journey awaits us, as we learn, grow and find our own “Power of Bold” together this weekend. Now, let us continue our worship—150 years of big, bold United Methodist Women worship! Whether you’re here in Columbus or joining us by Livestream, we are here together to celebrate everything God has done in us and through us. We are celebrating 150 years of service starting today, starting now!

When Have You Heard the Sacred Voice Calling to You?Mary’s sacred calling was about listening to the voice of the Holy One. Our obedience to the voice of the Holy One draws us nearer to both God and each other. Let’s talk about this for a moment. As we begin this bold Assembly journey together, turn to the women around you and share your response to this question:

“When have you heard the sacred voice calling to you?”

Please remember to be aware that the voices in your dialogue all need to be heard, so keep eyes on the time as you share. Turn to page 7 in your Journey Book now and record the words of your sisters that resonate with you. You don’t have to write every word, just one or two that resonate with you.

Our hope is that you’ll remember and hold holy these stories as we sojourn together this weekend. Again, the question is:

“When have you heard the sacred voice calling to you?”

REFER TO POWERPOINTS.

You can begin answering the question with your neighbor now.

Song: “The Summons” (Verse 2 begins the procession.)

The Deaconess/Home Missioner Consecration below included 25 candidates for consecration, the local West Ohio Conference Bishop Greg Palmer, Harriett Jane Olson, national staff, World Diaconate Representative Emma Cantor and Vice President and Deaconess Clara Ester of the West Florida-Alabama Conference. You will see their names in the service. We hope seeing the full language of the consecration will give you some sense of the moving experience this was for all involved.

DEACONESS/HOME MISSIONER CONSECRATION—Called to Be What for God’s World?

Order of Worship—Spiritual Growth and Songs—Assembly 2018

Journey Guide:Wasn’t that a wonderful expression of what being called to bold is all about? Like Mary, and like these consecrees, we’re all called by the sacred voice. Sometimes we can’t hear. Sometimes we don’t listen. Sometimes we ignore. Sometimes we don’t take time to open our hearts to this call. But we have this moment. This very moment. God calls us in many ways to many paths.

Journey Guide: What is the sacred voice calling you to be?

ALL:A voice for the voiceless,Called to be bold,Powerfully bold.

Journey Guide: For whom is the sacred voice calling you to assemble?

ALL:We assemble for the unheard,We assemble for the unseen,We assemble for the voiceless. Journey Guide: For which groups or individuals do you assemble today? I invite you to shout out their names.

[Allow 30 seconds for the calling of names.]

Song: “Let Your Light Shine” (three refrains with the congregation)

Journey Guide:We assemble for all the names we have spoken in this space, women, children, and men who are bold dreamers! The call to dream boldly is what moved Mary to say “yes” to her call, for the founders of United Methodist Women to travel across the world to meet the needs of women in India, for you and me and every organizational partner that drives our work from just an idea to reality. As we settle in for our journey together this weekend, reflect on the women and other people who have partnered with you in your bold dreaming over the course of your life.

Remember those moments, hold in your heart the stories—and bring them with you tonight as we unpack what it means to have bold dreams. Together.

Friday Evening, Community Gathering—BOLD DREAMS

Leader:“We assemble because the spirit calls forth a shout that cannot be contained.”

ALL: “We assemble because we must.”

Leader:“We assemble because we are connected to the witness of those who came before us, those who sojourn with us, and those who will come after us.”

ALL: “We assemble because we must.”

Leader:“We assemble because we partner with God and each other to do the work in the world.

ALL: “We assemble because we must.”

Leader:“We assemble because we are bold dreamers who are called, chosen, committed, commissioned, and set apart to be the hands and feet of God in the world. For this we assemble! And together we say:

ALL: “We assemble because we must!”

Journey Guide: As we center ourselves for this time together, we will share in what’s called “breath prayers.”

I am going to model what it’s like to do a “breath prayer.” I will inhale a deep breath, and when I exhale, I will say one of the phrases on the screen.” For example, I inhale … and exhale saying, “Come, Holy Spirit, Come.” I am relaxed, my hands are open, my feet are planted on the ground. I inhale again … and exhale saying, “Bless, Holy Spirit, Bless.” We will do it three times in the order as it’s listed on the screen.

Let’s try it together. Inhale … Exhale

[Breath Prayers—done in silence.] Display prayers on screens.

Journey Guide: We are not short of examples who show us what it means to be bold dreamers—from all our important partners, to United Methodist Women presidents, to the partnership of Mary and Elizabeth, to the countless women in this room who have dreamed boldly so that others may experience God’s goodness. Our bold dreams, while full of purpose and joy, call for us to consider the many ways we must sacrifice something to bring those dreams to reality.

Some sacrifices we may consider small, like time or money.

For others of us, that sacrifice comes with great cost, requiring more from us than we’d ever imagine.

7

Order of Worship—Spiritual Growth and Songs—Assembly 2018

Whatever the cost, it is our common commitment to Christ and to the work of our beloved organization that connects us beyond our differences; to bring our dreams into reality for the kin-dom of God means for us to reckon with the cost of boldness, especially for our sisters whose cost is not a choice, but a way of life.

As you find rest and reprieve tonight, think and write about what ways we can be bold, brave, risk takers together to further the work of the kin-dom of God. I want to see us be brave … are you ready to be brave?

Please stand as you are able.

Saturday Morning, Community Gathering—COST OF BOLD

Leader: “We assemble because the cost is too great when we leave our brothers and sisters behind.”

ALL: “We assemble because we must.”

Leader: “We assemble because the cost to share our stories is the price we pay for the liberation of others.

ALL: “We assemble because we must.”

Leader: We assemble because our shared stories are the threads that tie us to one universal God, one universal community.”

ALL: “We assemble because we must.”

Leader: “We assemble because it is our differences, whether rich or poor, urban or rural, liberal or conservative that make for rich, diverse, and multilayered kinds of love.”

ALL: We assemble because we must.

Leader:“We assemble because we learn how to show empathy in community with others.

ALL: “We assemble because we must.”

Leader: “We assemble because our love, empathy, compassion and diverse experiences build THIS community to do THIS work for a time such as this. And together we all say:”

ALL: “We assemble BECAUSE WE MUST.”

Order of Worship—Spiritual Growth and Songs—Assembly 2018

Are We Mary?Spiritual Journey Guide: As the beloved children of God, we are drawn into a community, a koinonia, that calls us to be in relationship with each other. These relationships are often complex and multidimensional; whether rural or urban or suburban, republican or democrat or independent, religious or spiritual or seeking, it is our common commitment to our faith and the work of Christ that calls us together despite our differences. When we really think about it, what’s so different about us? We all seek safety and security for our families. We all desire to live and thrive in nurturing communities and productive work environments, and desire access to healthy food and water. We want to see our children thrive in life-giving educational opportunities that prepare them for the road ahead. We all want this. And for many of us in this room and those watching online this is our lived reality. But for many of our sisters around the world, having this reality is a challenge. It requires many women to put risk before reward—a reward that is often just out of reach. Our identities, lived experiences and privileges give us the power to choose risk of bold action—and for those whose identities and lived experiences do not benefit from the systems of this world, risk without reward is inevitable. The question becomes: “Can we align to do the liberative work of Jesus Christ for all people despite these differences?” Can we commit to rise up against the empire to support and encourage, to honor each other’s particular experiences, even when they challenge our assumptions?

Mary’s life is an example of how to risk without knowing the outcome of reward. She took a bold yet costly decision to follow Jesus in a time where the voices of women and girls were muted and social expectations oppressed and limited them.

Journey Guide: A constant suspect of the government, the empire ... Death threats from his birth.

Mary was a constant protector of a holy, divine child, whose very being made him a target for violence. What price did Mary pay to protect this divine gift bestowed upon her? Our children require our protection—from poverty, from undereducation, from food scarcity, from joblessness, from addiction, from prison, from presumption that their very being is a nuisance to the status quo. We know the challenges at hand—now who will pick up the mantle of justice to see change in the world?

Prayer of ConfessionJourney Guide:Let us pray together (thinking about our own responsibilities):

ALL:God reclaim us back to your love, so we may see your people more clearly! Remind us that our limitations in being your hands and feet in the earth are often restricted by our own inability to see the humanity in others. When the forces of evil attempt to overtake us, remind us of the work of the women, the work of the bold women, who remind us that evil does not have the last word. Amen. Journey Guide:We know stories of women who decided to take risks alongside others—and their stories shape not only our rich history but how we reveal a new way of envisioning how we too can take bold risks in the name of service to others. What we don’t often speak about in telling our stories are the sacrifices made. The Cost of Bold is a part of our legacy as United Methodist Women. Check out two short videos—the first of a woman whose personal beliefs challenged and changed the actions of The United Methodist Church, and the second of how United Methodist Women missionaries and our U.S. volunteers bore the cost of time, money and family as a part of our legacy.

Journey Guide: Fifty years after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we are reminded that the fight for justice is the same today as it was in 1968. One of our very own, Clara Ester, vice president of United Methodist Women, was at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee the day Dr. King was assassinated. In this final video, she reflects on that fateful day and how his sacrifice has helped shape her lifelong commitment to justice. Let’s listen to her story.

Song: “Break Every Chain”Dancers offered a moving portrayal of this song, not just as liturgical dance but as a full creative interpretation piece.

Journey Guide:Break every chain! The chains of oppression, the chains of struggle, the chains that keep our communities from thriving.

Let us reflect on the powerful stories and insights we just heard and experienced through music, dance and dialogue ... When we hear and experience a story, we become part of the story. What part do we play in the oppressive systems that seek to destroy communities of color? How are we complicit when we remain silent, when we hold too tightly to our privilege, keeping the chains of bondage tied to the marginalized while we revel in our own freedoms? Please reflect in silence for a moment.

[Pause for silent reflection.]

12

Order of Worship—Spiritual Growth and Songs—Assembly 2018

What are we willing to sacrifice to be courageous voices for justice? Would we sacrifice our social status and/or relationships with those who might disagree with us? Would we sacrifice our safety, our security? Would we go to jail for it? What personal “cost” are we willing to pay to be truly bold? Let’s take another moment of silence to consider.

[Pause for silent reflection.]

Be in a moment of prayer with me as I lead us in a time of reflection.

Prayer: On Being Mary Mothers

Loving God, full of grace, who not only calls us to lament, to witness, to embody, but to move in hope and resiliency—a boldness modeled by Mary, the mother of Jesus.

Hearing a story, we become part of the story.

Empower us to continue on a path of boldness—even when the threat of violence is near. Undergird our willingness to fight for others even when we are unsure if others will fight for us.

[Pause for silent reflection.]

Give us the strength to live in the daily courage it takes to be a person of color in our communities.

[Pause for silent reflection.]

When one lonely voice dares to contradict the “accepted truth,” we ask that you help us find our voices, even when we feel voiceless and have no words.

[Pause for silent reflection.]

Help us to hear the stories of others, as theirs are inextricably connected to our own.

[Pause for silent reflection.]

Amen.

We often wonder if these issues of race, difference, social and economic injustices have any room in our lives for consideration—or action. Sometimes these issues can seem so far away from our realities, making it difficult for us to enter into conversation with those who are directly impacted by them.

13

Order of Worship—Spiritual Growth and Songs—Assembly 2018

We can shy away from action because we’re unsure or uncertain what to do. What we forget is that there are women and families in this room or watching online who are impacted by these injustices. Yes, in this very room.

[Transition begins—note for Journey Guide.]

But Scripture reminds us that we are called to walk alongside those whose lives are adversely impacted by injustice. We are one body, made up of many different parts—and without all of us willing to do our part to end injustices that other members of this great body endure, then we do even further damage to the body as a whole. To care for one member of the body is to care for the whole body. Romans 12:5 reminds us that though there are many of us, we are one body in Christ—and we belong to each other.

Okay, so how do we do this? Our [Re]View crew is going to help us get to the practical steps of this. Let’s join together in singing and welcome back our own officers to give us The [Re]View.

See [Re]View Tips document.

Song: “I Don’t Feel No Ways Tired”

Journey Guide:Let’s give our [Re]View crew, your elected officers, a round of applause!

Throughout the ages, well before Mary became the mother of Emmanuel, and well after our time here, women will surrender, sacrifice and risk to battle injustice, to work toward liberation for the least of these, to bring God’s kin-dom present and active in the lives of all God’s creation. We are risk-taking women! Tonight, after the service, we hope you will do some of our own personal work on what “risk” means to you.

First, you will write one thing you are willing to risk in order to see the work of God happen on the earth. This may be your privilege or your relationships with people in power; after that, name the cost of taking this risk. What will be the cost for you, personally, in taking this bold step?

And finally, name the greater reward that will come because of the bold action you took toward justice. When we come together again, let’s think about how this bold action leads us closer to God and each other.

Friend of the Groom Drama Troupe gave a funny performance of The Wedding at Cana story throughout the evening using multimedia and “guests” that came from the Assembly guests.

Shannon:“And his mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’” Which is still pretty good advice, even today. Jesus told Mary that his time had not yet come. Yet somehow, after Mary’s bold action—her faith that her son would do what was best—the equation changed, and “not yet” become “now.” Tonight, we continue to celebrate that tradition of faith with stories of bold action that are happening this very moment in our own communities.

Sunday Offering for Mission Giving: Susan Williams and Miran Kim

The offering below was led by members of the Board of Directors named above. Feel free to use the text for one of your collected offerings for general Mission Giving.

Susan: This is the day that the Lord has made! We will rejoice and be glad in it! What a powerful time of worshipping together. We have experienced so much joy in learning about the life and legacy of Mary, the mother of Jesus and how we find ourselves and our work in her life’s story.

Miran: Our work has ensured that the lives of women, youth and children across the globe have been enriched through the work of our hands and the power of our financial giving.

Susan: And we have another opportunity to have an impact as we take a moment to collect an offering for our general operating fund that allows us to allocate funds to the areas of the greatest need.

Miran: United Methodist Women is committed to meeting the real-time needs of the present and those we anticipate in the near future. Today’s offering will help us do just that.

Susan: We ask you to gather your offerings in your hand, or, if you so choose, use our text-to-give option through your cell phones using the numbers on the screen. We will repeat this slide at the end of the service if you wish to complete your donation at that time. Whether you give in person or through technology, God gets the glory!

It is a special privilege to know that you have entrusted us, for 150 years, to meet the needs of women, children and youth around the world—and for that we say thank you. Multiply these gifts so they may do what you have called them to do: be a bold testament to your love for us all. In Jesus’ name, amen.

We ARE Mary, Women who dream. Women who risk and act in the name of justice.Women who empower others, Women who take bold strides Filled with the Spirit that spins and turns revealing a light in the midst of darkness.

Just look around and see that energy Churning in each person in this place. An explosively welcoming and radical energy that, when joined together, becomesLike NOTHING the world has seen.

Take a moment to offer a creative expression that is energetic and bold. Perhaps use a local dance company, an energetic song, a vibrant piece of artwork that is ritually put together at the altar or any energized creative expression. Studies show that live performing arts or creative activities in Worships open our minds and hearts to hearing the Word in new and different ways.

Journey Guide:Wow, 150 years! For the last four days we have assembled—because we must! We have come together because there is this deep yearning for sisterhood and justice and mission. We have been called, we have dreamt, we have taken costly risks, we have acted in unity and we now celebrate in the POWER of BOLD! No matter where we are from, what language we speak, what our cultural traditions or social perspectives are, we are Mary, called to be bold in action, powerful in love and willingness to walk toward action—together. And we cannot leave this sacred place without having a plan. And this is one of the last communal actions that we will take together.

It will be a simple, powerful, bold, 3-point action plan.

It will be helpful to offer a piece of paper or card for them to write out their own action plans.

Action 1: Personal Commitment—How can you increase your role as a woman leader for United Methodist Women, The United Methodist Church and the broader community?

Action 2: Consider how can you invite new voices, today’s women, to join and lead your work for women, children and youth locally. Remember this might look different than what we are used to.

Action 3: What way can you and your local United Methodist Women’s unit do advocacy on one priority justice issue in your community?

Let’s do it together.

Estella:Join us in this sending forth litany; please stand in body or spirit.

We have heard and received the call.

ALL: We are called to be bold!

Clara:We have examined the costs of being bold and have decided that they are worth it!

ALL: We are ready to sacrifice!

Cindy:We have named Bold Actions and valued young women leaders in our midst.

ALL: We are inspired to create a new heaven and new earth for generations to come!

Gail:We have committed to an action plan (lift Journey Book), knowing that God’s challenge for us cannot wait.

ALL: We are ready for action!

Song: “Brave”
