“Be Strong and Work” In our last article we began by writing about the command of God to Haggai, to Zerubbabel, to Joshua and all the people of the land to “be strong and work.” That command of God was in regard to rebuilding the Temple of God that had been destroyed by the Babylo-nians. Today the temple is not some physical building but it is a spiritual building, the church. Peter said, “you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacri-fices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ” (I Peter 2:5, NKJV). Today our task is to be strong and work to help build up God’s church. The church is a place for work. Our Lord de-scribed the kingdom of heaven as “a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard” (Mt. 20:1). Again in answering a question about the destruction of Jerusalem and about the end of the world, Jesus spoke about the end of the world say-ing, “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 "Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time is. 34 "It is like a man going to a far country, who left his house and gave author-ity to his servants, and to each his work, and com-manded the doorkeeper to watch (Mk. 13:34). We need to be strong but what makes a strong church? It’s not necessarily numbers. Jonathan, the son of Saul un-derstood this when he suggested that he and his armor bearer go over to the camp of the Philistines. He told his armor bearer, “For nothing restrains the LORD from saving by many or by few” (I Sam. 14:6b). God has used few to do the work needed. For example Israel was not chosen because of its size. God told them, “The LORD did not set His love on you nor choose you because you were more in number than any other people, for you were the least of all peoples; 8 "but because the LORD loves you, and because He would keep the oath which He swore to your fa-thers, the LORD has brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you from the house of bond-age, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt” (Deut. 7:7, 8). When God chose Gideon to deliver Israel from the Amalekites and the Midianites, He reduced their army from 30,000 to 300 because “The people who are with you are too many for Me to give the Midia-nites into their hands, lest Israel claim glory for it-self against Me, saying, 'My own hand has saved me” (Judges 7:2). The Jews had failed to do the work God called them to do because they were busy building their own homes and saying it was not the right time to build God’s house. If we are not careful we can allow the same thing to happen to us today. We seem to have no time for working to build up God’s kingdom but we have time to do our own work. -to be continued
