WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: As we gather for worship, let us remember why we are here.

Our Brief Statement of Faith reminds us, “In life and death we belong to God.

Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the

communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of

Israel, whom alone we worship and serve.”

OPENING PRAYER

HYMN #673 “Jesus, Light of Joy” LAUDA ANIMA

(The soloists will sing the hymn. You are invited to follow along in the hymnal and reflect on the words. May this be a time of prayer for you!)

LITANY OF AFFIRMATION

Leader: Our Brief Statement of Faith reminds us that, “In a broken and fearful world

the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all

peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in Church and

culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others

for justice, freedom, and peace. In gratitude to God, empowered by the

Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful

Page 3: Order of Worship August 2, 2020 · NOTE: Sheet music for hymns can be found at the end of this document. The Lord invites all people, “Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters”

lives, even as we watch for God’s new heaven and new earth, praying,

“Come, Lord Jesus!”

The spirit gives us courage and there are times when fear seems to win. Let

us confess before God and one another those moments when we have

missed the mark of loving God and loving our neighbors as we love

ourselves.

A moment for silent confession

Leader: Lord, in your mercy

People: hear our prayers. ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS

SHARING THE PEACE

Leader: Since God has forgiven us, let us also forgive one another. The peace of our

Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.

People: And also with you. Leader: Let us share our forgiven joy with one another.

HYMN OF ASSURANCE #581 GLORIA PATRI

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,

World without end. Amen, Amen.

THE WORD OF GOD TO THE CHURCH

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

FIRST SCRIPTURE LESSON PSALM 139:1-12, 23-24

1O LORD, you have searched me and known me. 2You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from far away. 3You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. 4Even before a word is on my tongue, O LORD, you know it completely. 5You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. 6Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is so high that I cannot attain it.

Page 4: Order of Worship August 2, 2020 · NOTE: Sheet music for hymns can be found at the end of this document. The Lord invites all people, “Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters”

7Where can I go from your spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence? 8If I ascend to heaven, you are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there. 9If I take the wings of the morning and settle at the farthest limits of the sea, 10even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me fast. 11If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light around me become night,” 12even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is as bright as the day, for darkness is

as light to you. 23Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my thoughts. 24See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

SECOND SCRIPTURE LESSON MARK 1:21-28

21They went to Capernaum; and when the sabbath came, he entered the synagogue

and taught. 22They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having

authority, and not as the scribes. 23Just then there was in their synagogue a man with

an unclean spirit, 24and he cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth?

Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God.” 25But Jesus

rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” 26And the unclean spirit,

convulsing him and crying with a loud voice, came out of him. 27They were all amazed,

and they kept on asking one another, “What is this? A new teaching—with authority! He

commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.” 28At once his fame began to

spread throughout the surrounding region of Galilee.

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH FROM THE BRIEF STATEMENT OF FAITH

We trust in Jesus Christ, fully human, fully God.

Jesus proclaimed the reign of God:

Preaching good news to the poor and release to the captives,

Teaching by word and deed

And blessing the children, healing the sick and binding up the broken-hearted,

Eating with outcasts, forgiving sinners, and calling all the repent and believe the gospel.

ALL: (sign language for Amen)

Page 5: Order of Worship August 2, 2020 · NOTE: Sheet music for hymns can be found at the end of this document. The Lord invites all people, “Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters”

Unjustly condemned for blasphemy and sedition, Jesus was crucified,

Suffering the depths of human pain

And giving his life for the sins of the world.

God raised this Jesus from the dead,

Vindicating his sinless life,

Breaking the power of sin and evil,

Delivering us from death to life eternal.

ALL: (sign language for Amen) In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit,

We strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks

And to live holy and joyful lives,

Even as we watch for God’s new heaven and new earth,

Praying, “Come, Lord Jesus”

ALL: (sign language for Amen) With believers in every time and place,

We rejoice that nothing in life or in death

Can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

ALL: (sign language for Amen)

LEHIGH PRESBYTERYJuly 24, 2020

For such a time as this, the congregations and leadership of Lehigh Presbytery will partner to challenge and resource each other, so that we may boldly risk our comfort for the sake of the Gospel of Christ.

Unmasking our Christian Values "The rich and the poor meet together; the Lord is the maker of them all." - Proverb 22:2

Any day now, this will all be over. Soon, we will be back to normal. In just a few weeks, a month or two, this

fall, in the New Year, we‟ll be COVID-free.

Derek Penwell reminds us here that the early church had a similar response to the delay in Jesus‟ promised

return. He told his followers he was coming right back for them, and they believed him. They were

convinced that the return of their beloved Lord and Savior was imminent. So they sat and waited. And

waited. And waited.

Eventually, “when Jesus didn‟t return „in glory,‟ they had to scramble to figure out what sharing the good

news of the unfolding reign of God would look like in the interregnum. Huddling together in upper rooms,

they eventually realized, was an unworkable long-term strategy. The early church needed to recalibrate

not only its expectations about Jesus‟ return but also their mission while they waited. Otherwise, the project

Jesus started would begin to crumble.”

Likewise, the church of 2020 is called to figure out what to do until this global pandemic is over. We, too,

need to recalibrate our expectations about the timing of that, as well as our mission while we wait.

There‟s plenty to do. There are many, many opportunities for ministry in your community.

Schools, families, and children need our help. School systems around the country are reaching out to

neighborhood congregations asking if they have space that can be used to 1) expand access to socially

distanced areas and 2) offer internet access to students without such access at home.

An increasing number of people are food insecure. More than six million people signed up for food stamps

in the first three months of the coronavirus pandemic, an unprecedented increase that is likely to continue

as more people lose jobs and deplete their savings. Black and Hispanic households with children are nearly

twice as likely to be struggling with food as similar white families, a new analysis found. Local food banks are

overwhelmed.

Before COVID, homelessness was an epidemic on its own. Now, with tens of millions of Americans newly

unemployed, a crisis looms. Economists have projected a greater than 40% increase in homelessness when

eviction moratoria end. Preventing new homelessness in the moment we‟re in will require collaboration,

creativity, and experimentation.

These are the moments that can make or break us. These are moments that unmask our values as a nation,

as people, and as Christians. What is your congregation‟s mission while you wait? Don‟t let the project Jesus

started begin to crumble.

Grace and peace,

Rev. Rhonda Kruse, Transitional Presbytery Leader

7.24.2020 - Lehigh Presbytery News

My friend Mildred celebrated her 100th birthday on July 5, 2020. A lifelong Presbyterian, Mildred has served many terms on the session of her church in Indiana. Active at all levels of the PC(USA), Mildred’s first love has always been her local

congregation, including several years serving on staff. As I’ve known, watched, and learned from Mildred for 40 years, one thing that she taught me was the way that she lived out her service to Christ’s church is how ruling elders can serve as educators.

Ruling elders commit to teaching. Ruling elders have opportunities to help children learn the stories of the faith. They can engage with youth and young adults, talking with them about their joys and struggles and encouraging them in their faith journeys. Ruling elders should be on the constant lookout for resources to share with adults—resources that speak to life’s issues and challenges.

Ruling elders commit to worship. The regular presence of church leaders on Sunday mornings — or whenever their congregations worship — says loudly and clearly that community is vital to the life of faith. Singing and praying together, hearing and responding to God’s word together, ground us and empower us for the work of ministry in the world.

Ruling elders commit to mentoring others. Ruling elders mentor seekers by inviting them into the church community and by standing with them as they experience language and customs that may seem quite strange at first. They mentor those in confirmation classes by listening to their experiences, responding to their questions, and praying for them as they consider church membership. They welcome new church members with gratitude and enthusiasm. Ruling elders look for, and seek out, the gifts of church members and invite the sharing of those gifts.

Ruling elders commit to the whole life of the church. Even though ruling elders may have a particular ministry area to which they focus, they support the whole of their congregation’s life. They engage in mission endeavors, attend special musical events, and support youth group fundraisers. They model generosity in their

financial giving and share joyfully what the church and its ministry mean to them.

Ruling elders commit to the larger church. Ruling elders, as connectional leaders, have opportunities to be aware of and share church news and information with others — sometimes even their pastors. They can encourage support or presence at denominational gatherings such as the Presbyterian Youth Triennium, the Presbyterian Women’s Triennial Gathering, and at summer camps and conferences. They can be involved in meetings and committees of the presbytery, the synod, and the General Assembly so that they can learn from others, effect change, and return to their own communities with new ideas.

Ruling elders recognize, and even celebrate, that they do not cease to be ruling elders when the term on session is fulfilled. They know they’ve been called for life:

To teach;

To worship God regularly with joy and enthusiasm;

To invite others to the faith;

To nurture children, youth, and adults for the work of ministry in the church and in the world;

To engage in the life of their own particular communities;

To pray for people and places all over God’s world;

To share generously, whenever and wherever needed, their time, talent, and financial treasure;

To serve God and the church with energy, intelligence, imagination, and love.

Questions for Discussion

Take some time to think about the roles you have played in your service as a ruling elder.

How have you served as an educator for others?

How will you live out, or are you living out, your call after serving on the session?

Presbytery Mission Grants Available for Technology!

The word is out that the Synod has depleted its funds for congregational technology grants in response to the COVID crisis.

Don’t despair! Lehigh Presbytery has funds available to help churches purchase cameras, laptops, projectors, speakers, etc. to begin or improve an on-line worship service and other outreach to their communities.

We have another fund (small churches) with which we can offer grants to help small churches with Zoom subscriptions. If your congregation hopes to purchase audio/visual equipment needed to expand your mission through technology, simply submit a Presbytery Mission Grant Application to [email protected].

In March, in response to the Pandemic, the

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance offered grant

assistance to churches.

United Presbyterian Church of Pottsville was one

of the churches in Lehigh Presbytery to receive

this grant for their food pantry to help those in the

community.

With the worship services going virtual and

donations dwindling along with the rising need for

food supplies, the United Presbyterian Church

food pantry received much needed help from

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. With this help,

they were able to support their community

through this pandemic.

A note of thanks to the Presbyterian Disaster

Assistance Program from the many dedicated

volunteers who cared for their community:

Thank you so much for the donation (grant) from the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance to our food pantry. Due to the coronavirus, we temporarily closed the end of March through early May. Even though we were “closed” in April, we did distribute food to anyone who called the church in need of it.

Because of the virus, we had to change our way of distributing food. Previously, we had allowed people to come down to our food pantry, sign the necessary papers for Healthy Harvest and pick out food they liked from our shelves. We now bag the food, giving each family unit a variety of food, from peanut butter and jelly, a box of cereal, cans of fruit and veggies, meat or tuna, soup, to frozen choices we may have. Right now we have frozen

meals for four, sausage, butter and cheese sticks. Everyone receives that too.

One congregation member is keeping track of the names, ages and how many are in each family unit as required for Healthy Harvest. Two or three other congregation members are handing out the bags of food - all this outside wearing masks and keeping a social distance.

It has been good to see so many of our regulars returning and coping as well as possible. Thank you again for your support of our food pantry.

What is a Matthew 25 church?

Matthew 25:31–46 calls all of us to actively engage in the world around us, so our faith comes alive and we wake up to new possibilities. Convicted by this passage, both the 222nd and 223rd General Assemblies (2016 and 2018) exhorted the PC(USA) to act boldly and compassionately to serve people who are hungry, oppressed, imprisoned or poor.

INVITE A PRESBYTERIAN MISSION CO-WORKER FOR A VIRTUAL VISIT TO YOUR CHURCH

They’re available to preach!

Until in-person visits can resume safely, there has never been a better time to invite mission co-workers to visit your congregation virtually than right now. “Mission co-workers are connecting with congregations intentionally and intensively when they are on virtual interpretation assignments,” said Mary Nebelsick, mission specialist for mission interpretation in Presbyterian World Mission. “Mission co-workers who are not on interpretation assignments are connecting virtually with their supporters as well.”

Through technology, PC(USA) mission co-workers can visit congregations in various ways, such as online worship services, mission committee or session meetings, Sunday school or Vacation Bible School.
