 THE PROFESSION OF FAITH

The priest vested in surplice and purple stole is seated in the middle of the altar predella, unless the Blessed Sacrament is reserved in the tabernacle — in which case he takes a place

at the epistle side. The convert kneels before him, and with his right hand on the book ofGospels makes the profession of faith as given below.

I, N, .... years of age, born outside the Catholic Church, have held and believed errorscontrary to her teaching. Now, enlightened by divine grace, I kneel before you, ReverendFather N, having before my eyes and touching with my hand the holy Gospels. And withfirm faith I believe and profess each and all the articles contained in the Apostles' Creed, that is: I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; and in JesusChrist, His only Son our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the VirginMary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descendedinto hell. The third day He arose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven and sittethat the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence He shall come to judge theliving and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy Catholic Church, thecommunion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the lifeeverlasting. Amen.

I firmly admit and embrace the apostolic and ecclesiastical traditions and all the otherconstitutions and ordinances of the Church.

I admit the Sacred Scriptures in the sense which has been held and is still held by holyMother Church, whose duty it is to judge the true sense and interpretation of SacredScripture, and I shall never accept or interpret them in a sense contrary to the unanimousconsent of the fathers.

I profess that the sacraments of the New Law are truly and precisely seven in number, instituted for the salvation of mankind, though all are not necessary for each individual:baptism, confirmation, holy Eucharist, penance, anointing of the sick, holy orders, andmatrimony. I profess that all confer grace, and that baptism, confirmation, and holy orderscannot be repeated without sacrilege. I also accept and admit the ritual of the CatholicChurch in the solemn administration of all the aforementioned sacraments.

I accept and hold in each and every part all that has been defined and declared by theSacred Council of Trent concerning original sin and justification. I profess that in the Massthere is offered to God a true, real, and propitiatory sacrifice for the living and the dead;that in the holy sacrament of the Eucharist the body and blood together with the soul anddivinity of our Lord Jesus Christ is really, truly, and substantially present, and that theretakes place in the Mass what the Church calls transubstantiation, which is the change of allthe substance of bread into the body of Christ and of all substance of wine into His blood.

I confess also that in receiving under either of these species one receives Jesus Christ whole and entire.

I firmly hold that Purgatory exists and that the souls detained there can be helped by theprayers of the faithful.

Likewise I hold that the saints, who reign with Jesus Christ, should be venerated andinvoked, that they offer prayers to God for us, and that their relics are to be venerated.

I firmly profess that the images of Jesus Christ and of the Mother of God, ever a Virgin,as well as of all the saints should be given due honour and veneration. I also affirm that

Jesus Christ left to the Church the faculty to grant indulgences, and that their use is mostsalutary to the Christian people. I recognize the holy, Roman, Catholic, and apostolicChurch as the mother and teacher of all the churches, and I promise and swear trueobedience to the Roman Pontiff, successor of St. Peter, the prince of the apostles and

 vicar of Jesus Christ.

Moreover, without hesitation I accept and profess all that has been handed down, defined, and declared by the sacred canons and by the general councils, especially by theSacred Council of Trent and by the Vatican General Council, and in special manner all thatconcerns the primacy and infallibility of the Roman Pontiff. At the same time I condemnand reprove all that the Church has condemned and reproved. This same Catholic faith, outside of which none can be saved, I now freely profess and I truly adhere to it. With thehelp of God, I promise and swear to maintain and profess this faith entirely, inviolately, and with firm constancy until the last breath of life. And I shall strive, as far as possible,

that this same faith shall be held, taught, and publicly professed by all who depend on meand over whom I shall have charge.

So help me God and these holy Gospels.

What is man, that Thou art mindful of him?* and the son of man, that Thou visitest him? Thou madest him lower than the angels, *

to crown him with glory and worship. Thou makest him to have dominion of the

Ps. XLI Quemadmodum desiderat cervus ad

fontes aquarum : * ita desiderat anima meaad te Deus.

Sitivit anima mea ad Deum fortem,

vivum : * quando veniam, et appareboante faciem Dei?

Fuerunt mihi lacrymæ meæ panes die acnocte : * dum dicitur mihi quotidie : Ubiest Deus tuus?

Hæc recordatus sum, et effudi in meanimam meam : * quoniam transibo inlocum tabernaculi admirabilis, usque addomum Dei.

In voce exsultationis, et confessionis : *

sonus epulantis.Quare tristis es anima mea? * et quare

conturbas me?Spera in Deo, quoniam adhuc confitebor

illi : * salutare vultus mei, et Deus meus. Ad meipsum anima mea conturbata est :

* propterea memor ero tui de terraIordanis, et Hermoniim a monte modico. Abyssus abyssum invocat, * in voce

cataractarum tuarum.

Omnia excelsa tua, et fluctus tui * superme transierunt.

In die mandavit Dominus misericordiamsuam : * et nocte canticum eius. Apud me oratio Deo vitæ meæ, * dicam

Deo : Susceptor meus es.Quare oblitus es mei? * et quare

contristatus incedo, dum affligit meinimicus ?

Dum confringuntur ossa mea, *

exprobraverunt mihi, qui tribulant me,inimici mei.

Dum dicunt mihi per singulos dies : Ubiest Deus tuus? * quare tristis es animamea? et quare conturbas me?

Spera in Deo, quoniam adhuc confiteborilli : * salutare vultus mei, et Deus meus.

Gloria Patri, etc.

Like as the hart desireth the water-brooks, *so longeth my soul after Thee, O God.

My soul is athirst for God, yea, even for theliving God: * when shall I come to appear

before the presence of God?My tears have been my meat day and night,

* while they daily say unto me, Where is nowthy God?

Now when I think thereupon, I pour outmy heart by myself; * for I went with themultitude, and brought them forth into thehouse of God;

In the voice of praise and thanksgiving, *among such as keep holy-day.

Why art thou so full of heaviness, O mysoul? * and why art thou so disquieted withinme?

O put thy trust in God; * for I will yet thankHim, which is the help of my countenance, and my God.

My soul is vexed within me; * therefore willI remember thee from the land of Jordan, from Hermon and the little hill.

One deep calleth another, because of the

noise of thy waterfloods; * all thy waves andstorms are gone over me. The Lord will grant His loving-kindness in

the daytime; * and in the night season will Ising of Him, and make my prayer unto theGod of my life.

I will say unto the God of my strength, Whyhast Thou forgotten me? * why go I thusheavily, while the enemy oppresseth me?

My bones are smitten asunder as with a

sword, * while mine enemies that trouble mecast me in the teeth;

Namely, while they say daily unto me, * Where is now thy God?

Why art thou so vexed, O my soul? * and why art thou so disquieted within me?

O put thy trust in God; * for I will yet thankHim, which is the help of my countenance,

ROLL CALL

Then the priest proceeds to the threshold of the church, beyond which stands the elect.

S. Quo nomine vocaris?

R.  N.S.  N, quid petis ab Ecclesia Dei?R.  Fidem.S.  Fides, quid tibi præstat?R.  Vitam æternam.S. Si vis habere vitam æternam, serva

mandata. Diliges Dominum Deum tuumex toto corde tuo, et ex tota anima tua, etex tota mente tua, et proximum tuum sicutte ipsum. In his duobus mandatis tota Lex

S.  What is thy name?

R.  N.S. N, what dost thou ask of the Church of

God? R.  Faith.S.  What doth faith bring thee to?R.  Life everlasting.S.  If then thou desirest to inherit everlasting

life, keep the commandments. Thou shaltlove the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy wholemind; and thy neighbour as thyself. On these

two commandments depend the whole Lawand the Prophets. Now faith demandeth thatthou shouldst worship one God in Trinity, and Trinity in unity, neither confounding thePersons, nor dividing the substance. For thereis one Person of the Father, another of theSon, and another of the Holy Ghost; yet all

Three possess the one nature, the oneGodhead.

FIRST RENUNCIATION

He questions him further:S. N, abrenuntias satanæ?R.  Abrenuntio.S.  Et omnibus operibus eius?R.  Abrenuntio.S.  Et omnibus pompis eius?R.  Abrenuntio.

S. N, dost thou renounce Satan? R.  I do renounce him.S.  And all his works?R.  I do renounce them.S.  And all his pomps?R. I do renounce them.

 THE ABSOLUTION FROM CENSURES

With the convert kneeling, the priest, seated, says the Miserere or De Profundis.

Ps. L Miserere mei, Deus: * secundum

magnam misericordiam tuam.Et secundum multitudinem

miserationum tuarum : * dele iniquitatemmeam. Amplius lava me ab iniquitate mea : * et

a peccato meo munda me.Quoniam iniquitatem meam ego

Asperges me hyssopo, et mundabor : *

lavabis me, et super nivem dealbabor. Auditui meo dabis gaudium et lætitiam :

* et exsultabunt ossa humiliata. Averte faciem tuam a peccatis meis : * et

omnes iniquitates meas dele.Cor mundum crea in me Deus : * et

spiritum rectum innova in visceribus meis.Ne proiicias me a facie tua : * et Spiritum

sanctum tuum ne auferas a me.Redde mihi lætitiam salutaris tui : * et

spiritu principali confirma me.Docebo iniquos vias tuas : * et impii ad

te convertentur.Libera me de sanguinibus Deus, Deus

salutis meæ : * et exsultabit lingua meaiustitiam tuam.

Domine, labia mea aperies : * et os

Have mercy upon me, O God, after Thygreat goodness; * according to the multitudeof Thy mercies do away mine offences. Wash me throughly from my wickedness, *

and cleanse me from my sin.For I acknowledge my faults, * and my sin is

ever before me. Against Thee only have I sinned, and done

this evil in Thy sight; * that Thou mightest bejustified in Thy saying, and clear when Thoushalt judge.

Behold, I was shapen in wickedness, * andin sin hath my mother conceived me.

But lo, Thou requirest truth in the inwardparts, * and shalt make me to understand

wisdom secretly. Thou shalt purge me with hyssop, and I

shall be clean; * Thou shalt wash me, and Ishall be whiter than snow. Thou shalt make me hear of joy and

gladness, * that the bones which Thou hastbroken may rejoice. Turn Thy face from my sins, * and put out

all my misdeeds.Make me a clean heart, O God, * and renew

a right spirit within me.Cast me not away from Thy presence, * and

take not thy holy Spirit from me.O give me the comfort of thy help again, *

and stablish me with Thy free Spirit.

Then shall I teach Thy ways unto the wicked, * and sinners shall be converted unto Thee.

Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, Thou that art the God of my health; * and mytongue shall sing of Thy righteousness. Thou shalt open my lips, O Lord, * and my

Ps. CXXIX De profundis clamavi ad te Domine : *

Out of the deep have I called unto Thee, OLord; * Lord, hear my voice.

O let Thine ears consider well * the voice ofmy complaint.

If Thou, Lord, wilt be extreme to mark whatis done amiss, O Lord, who may abide it?

For there is mercy with Thee; * thereforeshalt Thou be feared.

I look for the Lord; my soul doth wait for

Him; * in His word is my trust. My soul fleeth unto the Lord before the

morning watch; * I say, before the morning watch.

O Israel, trust in the Lord; for with the Lordthere is mercy, * and with Him is plenteousredemption. And He shall redeem Israel * from all his

INTRODUCTION

When a priest administers confirmation in virtue of the faculty granted him by the HolySee, he is vested in surplice, white stole and even a cope of the same color. He standsbefore the altar facing the people. The priest explains to all present that a bishop alone is

the ordinary minister of confirmation and that he himself is to confirm by specialdelegation.

Then, if the delegation was granted by indult, the pertinent document is read aloud andclearly in the vernacular. After this the priest admonishes that no one of the confirmed isto leave before the blessing which he will give at the end of the ceremony. He directs thecandidate to place one foot on the right foot of the sponsor.

Now that all is ready the ceremony begins. As the confirmand kneels before him withfolded hands, the priest, facing the confirmand, folds his hands on his breast and says: V.  Spiritus Sanctus superveniat in te, et

virtus Altissimi custodiat te a peccatis.R.  Amen.

 V.  May the Holy Ghost descend upon thee, and may the power of the Most High keepthee from sin. R.  Amen.
