From the Director’s Desk

Greetings from Orbis!

As I write, it dawned upon me that we are inching towards the end of the year. We have had a

wonderful 2018 so far and an eventful quarter that we bring to you in this issue.

It was great to have all our partners come together for the Annual Orbis India Partners’ Meet in

Indore and deliberate on ’Quality in Training’ along with renowned Neuro-ophthalmologist and

Director of Education at ICO, Dr. Karl Golnik. This year, we also welcomed our partners from

Nepal and Indonesia.

This has been a quarter of achievements for our partners. We would like to congratulate Sankara

Nethralaya for 40 years of service and are immensely thankful for their contribution to the eye

health ecosystem in India and around the world. Congratulations to Dr. Ashi for being recognized

as the Woman Ophthalmologist of the Year at Ophthall 2018. And a huge shout out to all the Eye

Health Heroes 2018. I hope we continue the good work and create a lasting

impact in the lives of individuals and communities we work with.

Annual Orbis India Partners’ Meet 2018

The Partners’ Meet is an annual event which we and our partners greatly look forward to. This year, the

meet was hosted by our partner Choithram Netralaya, Indore. We discussed, reflected and learned

about ‘Quality in Training’, somethings that is very close to our heart at Orbis. The deliberations were

led by Dr. Karl Golnik, Neuro-ophthalmologist at the University of Cincinnati and the ICO Director of

Education. For the very first time, it was a regional meet attended by our partners from India, Nepal and

Indonesia. A CME was also held in collaboration with the Indore Divisional Ophthalmological Society.

(IDOS) and attended by ophthalmologists and residents from in and around Indore.

Sankara Nethralaya celebrates its 40th Foundation Day

We congratulate Sankara Nethralaya (SN) for completing 40 years in eye care. The hospital recently

celebrated its foundation day at Sri VD.Swami Auditorium. Recognized for its high-quality patient care,

medical research, teaching and training in ophthalmic subspecialties, SN is one of Orbis’s Pediatric

Ophthalmology Learning and Training Center (POLTC) since 2001. The POLTC at SN has trained

numerous ophthalmologists, optometrists, anesthetists and nurses over the years from India and

abroad. We laud SN, a Centre of Excellence, for its exemplary contribution to the field of eye care.

During the celebration the ‘Sankara Nethralaya Anthem’ or theme song was launched.

Look who visited us!

We had two special visitors from Qatar – Dr. Faisal Naqadan, Lead Ophthalmologist, Hamad Medical

Corporation in Qatar and Dr. Mohammed Al-Hajri, Director of Emergency Preparedness And Response

Department, Qatar Ministry of Public Health. Both visited H.V. Desai Eye Hospital, Pune and Aravind

Eye Hospital, Madurai where we are currently implementing REACH—Refractive Error Among

Children, an innovative model for school eye health. It included visits to screening programs at schools

as well as Vision Centers and beneficiary homes. A film was also shot on the initiative of Qatar in

fighting blindness through the Qatar Creating Vision program in India. This will be screened at the

World Innovation Summit for Health (WISH) 2018 which will be held in Doha this November.

Study shows a simple pair of glasses can boost productivity and reduce poverty

Orbis, in collaboration with Clearly and other organizations, conducted a study involving 750, mostly

female, tea pickers in Assam which showed that the daily weight of tea picked by those given glasses

increased by over five kilos, translating into increased income for them and their families. The

PROSPER (PROductivity Study of Presbyopia in Rural-dwellers) trial found that a $1.80 pair of reading

glasses improved productivity by 22% over a three-month period. The results were even more profound

in the over-50 age group with a 32% increase in productivity. This represents the largest ever recorded

productivity increase from any health intervention.

Kudos to the Eye Health Heroes

of 2018

Like every year, this year too, IAPB

recognized champions in eye health as

Eye Health Heroes. We would like to

congratulate all the Eye Health Heroes

for their efforts and contribution. We

would like to take this opportunity to

congratulate some of our partners: Dr.

R.C. Paul, Founder and Secretary,

Susrut Eye Foundation & Research

Centre, Mr. Ganesh Babu, Senior

Manager – Systems & IT, Aravind Eye

Care System, Dr Kaushik Murali,

Pediatric ophthalmologist, Sankara Eye

Foundation and Mr. Bikash Chandra

Mohanta (awarded posthumously),

Administrator Public Eye Health, L.V.

Prasad Eye Institute for receiving the

prestigious title.

Orbis joint winner of photo competition

Orbis has completed 20 years in Ethiopia and while we celebrate our efforts there, we had more good

news pouring in! Geoff Oliver Bugbee, Visual Communications Consultant at Orbis, had taken a picture

of a child facing trachoma, a neglected tropical disease (NTD) in Ethiopia which won a photo

competition held by the NTD NGO Network (NNN) and Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene

at the NNN Conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It is indeed fair to say ‘A picture is worth a

thousand words’.

VISION 2020 INDIA’S Board Meeting held at the Orbis office

The 59th VISION 2020 INDIA Board Meeting was held at the Orbis office in Gurgaon and was attended

by Dr. Sangeeta Abrol, DDG(O), National Program For Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment,

Phanindra Babu Nukella, CEO VISION 2020 INDIA along with other board members from Dr. R P

Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences, INGOs working for eye health, eye hospitals and industry partners. It

Orbis’ first live video consultation with a doctor in Syria

It is overwhelming to see two doctors across borders work together. Cybersight, our telemedicine

platform allows us to reach out to people who cannot be accessed through conventional means. Dr.

Daniel Neely, one of our Volunteer Faculty members held a live video consultation with a doctor in Syria

through Cybersight. He discussed four complex cases with Dr. Wael Hamoudeh from Almouassat

University Hospital in Damascus, which continues to operate despite ongoing conflict. Dr. Hamoudeh

has been an avid participant in Cybersight, submitting consult cases, taking courses and attending live

webinars. Kudos to Team Cybersight! For more webinars: https://cybersight.org/lectures/

Congratulations Dr. Ashi

We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Dr. Ashi Khurana, Vice-Chairman, C.L. Gupta

Eye Institute (CLGEI) and Head of Cornea and Anterior Segment Services, for receiving the Woman

Ophthalmologist of the Year Award. She was recognized for her work in eye care at Ophthall 2018

which was held at Chennai. It has been our pleasure working with CLGEI and Dr. Ashi over the last few

years strategizing and implementing the CLGEI - Orbis Comprehensive Childhood Blindness Project in

the state of Uttar Pradesh. Congratulations Dr. Ashi!

Stories along the

Orbis journey!

One-year-old Ahil had cataract (clouding of the lens of the eye) in his left eye.

Often he would cry and his parents would not be able to tell what was bothering

him. One day, someone from Ahil’s extended family, had paid a visit and pointed

out that Ahil had an eye problem – he seemed to have a white layer in his eye.

Ahil’s cataract was removed at Orbis partner hospital, Susrut Eye Foundation &

Research Centre. His wary parents were content when Ahil serenely lay on their

lap after coming out of the operation room. They were glad that Ahil would not

grow up to suffer with what they called a “defective eye.”
