Day 3 Banyuwangi, Indonesia

Banyuwangi permits an access to two very different National Parks of Indonesia: just across the less than 2 mile wide Bali Strait is the West Bali National Park. Dense mangrove forests, dry savannah, and rainforest can all be found within that park. Trails lead through some memorable rainforest and permit birdwatching. Close to 160 species of birds are known from the park and there is a captive breeding and re-introduction programme of the near extinct Bali Starling. Water monitors and muntjak deer can be seen, as well as long-tailed macaques. Ebony langurs are more difficult to find, but live in small colonies in the park. Diving and snorkelling at the uninhabited island of Menjangan is considered among the best Bali has to offer. The other well-known area close to Banyuwangi is Mount Merapi with the highly acidic Ijen Crater Lake the biggest crater lake in Java. One can drive up to the crater, but has to walk the last three kilometres to see it. Local men are still mining the sulphur and have to carry their loads some 17 kilometres to the next factory. Close-by are the very productive slopes of extinct Mount Merapi. Here one can see the Kaliklatak Plantation. Coffee, cocoa, clove, rubber and spices are grown here and it is possible to see the different stages of harvesting, processing and packaging the various products. Banyunwangi is also known as Gandrung City referring to the special performance

that the rice-growers have in gratitude for a good harvest.Perhaps we will have the chance to see a Gandrung dance tohonour Dewi Sri, the goddess of the rice paddy -one of thetraditional arts and the characteristic symbols of Banyuwangi.

Day 4 Pasuruan, Indonesia

Our excursion will take us to Bromo Tengger Semeru NationalPark with its interesting volcanic complex. Within the TenggerCaldera there are five volcanoes all reaching heights above2,300 metres and located within the Tengger Sand Sea. Justsouth of Mount Bromo is the Semeru complex, where MountSemeru, one of Indonesias most active volcanoes, eruptsalmost exactly every 20 minutes. Based on the height of thearea above sea-level you have different types of forests. Thelowest zone has tropical rainforest including 225 species oforchids (many of them endemic), while the montane zone hasJavanese Edelweiss. The park has some 130 species of birds, including Besra, Green Peafowl, and Java Hawk Eagle.

Day 5 Sumenep, Indonesia

Sumenep is located on the eastern side of the island of Madura. One of the most outstanding historical buildings is the Sumenep Great Mosque. Built in 1763 it is one of the ten oldest mosques in Indonesia and its style is very unusual: it has both a Chinese and a European influence. Close to the Great Mosque and Adipura Park is the Museum and Palace of Sumenep. The Palace (Keraton) was built at almost exactly at the same time as the Great Mosque. Sumenep and the surrounding areas are home to a number of traditional arts and crafts among them the production of Keris (daggers), batik, woodcarving of the Karduluk style and the Munagsangkal and mask dances. On Maduras northern shore Slopeng and Lombang Beach with their white sand and casuarina trees are

favourite weekend attractions for the local population.

Day 6 Kumai (for Camp Leaky), Indonesia

During the morning attend a lecture about Camp Leaky and thecontinuous efforts by Dr. Birute Galdikas to save the orangutan. After lunch we will approach Kumai and one of the mostimportant National Parks of Borneo and Indonesia TamanNasional Tanjung Puting. Tanjung Puting is the largest and mostdiverse protected example of extensive coastal tropical heathand peat swamp forest which used to cover much of southernBorneo. The area was originally declared as a game reserve in1935 and a National Park in 1982 and it remains substantiallywild and natural. The tropical swamp ecosystems in TanjungPuting have caused many trees to have stilt roots or aerial rootsas adaptations to frequent flooding. The great variety ofmicrohabitats for plants and animals within the park allowsmany species to be present in close proximity.

Day 7 Kumai (for Camp Leaky), Indonesia

This morning we will board our busses for the drive to Camp Leaky. Camp Leakey was designed to provide a base for scientists, staff, students, and Park Rangers studying wildlife in the Tanjung Puting National Park. Over the years projects have mainly focused on the orangutan, their sign language abilities and cognition, but also on proboscis monkeys, gibbons and leaf-eating monkey behaviour and ecology. Apart from orangutan, the proboscis monkey and seven other primate species are found in the park. Clouded leopards, civets, and Malaysian sun bears, mouse deer, barking deer, sambar deer, and wild cattle known as banteng are other mammals seen here, but there are also over 230 species of birds. So called bird lakes, seasonal rookeries for several species of endangered waterbirds, are another attraction White Egrets are known to use

these for their nesting grounds. Snakes, frogs and even twospecies of crocodiles call Tanjung Puting their home.

Day 8 Cruising the Java Sea

A day at sea always gives good opportunities to assess thethings seen so far and to prepare one for the different islandsstill to be visited. Enjoy a lecture about culture and naturalhistory, or perhaps about the more modern influences on thisremote part of the world. Help our birders spot some of theseabirds found far away from their nesting grounds. A refreshingdrink and an interesting book can be good company, too. Thereare many ways to enjoy the day while Silver Discoverer cruisesat sea.

Day 9 Badas Islands, Indonesia

The Badas Islands are part of the Tudjuh Archipelago west ofBorneo and belong to the Riau Islands province. Shipping lanesare not near and the relative isolation of the islands added totheir hilly structure and rugged coastline has led to only smallsettlements. There are a few sandy beaches and fringing reefsand we will look for appropriate snorkelling and diving sites.

Day 10 Bawah Island, Indonesia

Uninhabited Pulau Bawah is one of the Anambas Islands, someof the northernmost islands of Indonesia. Reputed to havesome of Southeast Asias most spectacular coast with goodsnorkelling and diving sites our Captain and Expedition Leaderwill determine where we will anchor to make the most of the day-be it exploring the interior of the island, hiking to a waterfall, orenjoying the indigenous marine life swimming, snorkelling ordiving. Tonight we have the Captains Farewell Cocktail Party andDinner!

Itsinland rainforest has been declared a Wildlife Reserve in the1970s and the sea around it a Marine Park and MarineReserve. It has been selected as one of the worlds mostbeautiful islands and its numerous coral reefs make it afavourite snorkel and dive site. You can choose whether youwant to explore the sparsely settled interior and its forest, looking for long-tailed macaques, black giant squirrels or redgiant flying squirrels and some of the 138 species of birdsknown from the island, or whether you want to explore theunderwater world swimming, snorkelling, diving or on the glassbottom boat, looking for Gorgonian sea fans, staghorn coral, nudibranches and sea sponges or swimming alongsideNapoleon wrasses, trevally, parrotfish or fusiliers.
