Keep driving those Buicks, especially to our tours, and to our

monthly meetings

Our tour on Saturday September 17 to the Woody show in Encini-tas was great. We boarded the Metro Link train in Orange and ar-rived in Encinitas at 11:25 after changing trains in Oceanside to the Coaster. (The Metro Link does not stop in Encinitas.) The weather there was perfect. We stopped for breakfast before going to the show , which was a short walk down the street. We viewed the Woodies, which were beautiful. Every kind and condition you can imagine. Mostly in excellent condition, however there were a few that were un restored. We saw Paul Riker’s woody, and had a short talk with his wife and friend who were relaxing under a tree behind the car. We then walked the short distance to the downtown area where a bazaar was being held. After walking around the bazaar and buy-ing a few of their goods, we headed back to the train station. We-had a enjoyable ride both ways. We arrived in Orange at 6:PM.

The Ticonometer

A 1930's Automotive Navigation Device

by Ray Brown

In 1932, Lillian Yancey Huffaker, filed a patent for a device that used a combination of clockworks and map to provide a means of navigating select major highways. She named her invention at Ti-conometer from the TIme Controlled instruments METER. She formed a company in 1933 located in the Wilshire Professional Building in Los Angeles and contracted with Seth Thomas Clock Co. in Tomaston, Connecticut to build the hardware. Lillian de-signed several unique straight-line maps to use with her invention including maps for El Camino Real or Hwy 101, Hwy 99, and Route 66 from LA to St. Louis. Her maps included the major route, with distances and points of interest such as hotels, inns and other information including historical sites and key industrial and agri-cultural areas. The Ticonometer has a five speed "transmission" that was used to select the average speed of the car so the map

would advance and keep the current location visible in a window.

Member Ray Brown, through searches on the internet, was able to piece together a history of Lillian and her invention. Ray described the working of the Ticonometer and then we had a "Road Trip" from LA to San Francisco using Lillian's Hwy 101 Ticonometer map as our guide. Ray showed pictures of key places called out on the 1933 map and showed then and now pictures for those places still around after nearly 80 years. Ray also passed around two working Ticonometers with maps of Highways 101 and 99 plus a clockworks from another so members could see how the clock-works could be used to drive the map at different rates. Thank you Ray for the great presentation at our meeting and this article Sheridan Bishop Editor
