Shawn Gillespie of Phoenix Contact presented an informativemini-seminar on basic commercial and industrial Ethernet with its featuresand benefits as the backbone for automation platforms. The meeting washeld on July 14th at Fluor Irvine. A meeting notice was mailed in advance.
“Ethernet has finally arrived on the industrial automation landscape,”writes Shawn. “New protocols, like Ethernet IP, Modbus TCP, and Profinetare gaining significant market share in applications that have traditionallyrelied on serial bus communications. This trend will continue as moreEthernet installations appear on the factory floor with innovativecomponents designed specifically for the industrial environment. Still, there exists a lot of confusion over how Ethernet bridged the gap from
commercial and residential applications to becoming a proven industrial technology.” Shawn Gillespie is Western RegionAutomation Sales Engineer for PhoenixContact and has been with PhoenixContact since February 2009. He has over10 years of technical and sales experiencespecific to the industrial Automationindustry.

A Warped View of Embedded SoftwareJohn Wisniewski of Winc Research presented “AWarped View of Embedded Software” to the ISALos Angeles Section on Tuesday, May 18, 2010 atthe Energy Resource Center in Downey. John’spresentation centeredon the legal, social, scientific and mythicperceptions of breathalcohol testers, as Johnhas been an expertcourt witness forseveral court cases
involving the software embedded in breath testers used in manystates to provide evidence used to prosecute DUI offenders. He alsodiscussed the technology behind common alcohol breathalyzers andother types of instrumentation using embedded software, whoseflaws often go undetected until a catastrophe occurs.

GFC300 can be ordered as a single, two independent or a dual flow computer. It canvery accurately measure volume, compensated volume and mass of liquids and gases.Or volume and mass of steam, saturated or superheated, in a very large ranges ofpressures and temperatures. GFC300 calculates density and compressibility factors witha very high accuracy.
Each channel has one flow input that accepts pulses with 24VDC / 20 mA power forthe pulse sensor and 4-20 mA loop power flow signal.
30 points linearization for each pulse input can significantly improve the flow metersperformances. Flow meter calibration tables can be entered there.
Each channel has one 4-20 mA loop power input for temperature or density and onefor pressure with a typical error of 0.01% full scale for each.
The isolated analog output of each channel can be ordered as 4-20 mA loop power,0-5V or 0-10V. It can be programmed to represent rate, rate A+B, pressure ortemperature.
The isolated pulse output of each channel is sinking open drain 100V / 100 mA andcan represent total, total A–B or total A+B, producing pulses of frequencies up to 10kHz.
Each channel has also one relay for 250VAC / 5 A with programmable hysteresis forrate, rate A+B, pressure or temperature
Both flow rates are seven digit, totals are eight digit. There are separate units for flowrate and total for each channel. Many volume and mass units are listed in specialmenus. Flow rate and total for each channel have independent programmable decimalplaces. GFC300 has many preset liquids, gases and temperature transmitters whichsimplifies its programming.
Power can be ordered as 85-250 VAC, or 12VDC or 24 VDC, all with high isolation, surge, reverse polarity, under-voltage, over-current and short circuit protection. GFC300has a bright transmissive color graphic display with a white back-light and easy to usescroll drop list menus. Fully compliant, programmable RS485, 1/8 load, MODBUS RTUfor baud rates up to 115 200 makes GFC300 highly network-able. Multilevel menus, thefirst of which can be locked make programming easy, simple and protected.
Size is DIN 72 x144 mm panel mount, weight is 0.45 kg (1.0 lb).All software options can be enabled on the field with passwords.

Obituary
Gary Bell remembered Gary Randal Bell, well-known andrespected throughout the Southern Californiaanalyzer industry, passed away April 19,2010, at the age of 54 and will be missed. Many people in the industry first metGary at Johnson Controls. At Johnson he metJohn Stammen and later went to work forJohn for a number of years after he formedStammen & Associates in Buena Park.
“Gary was well known for ‘sampleintegrity’ but perhaps more for his personalintegrity. I will remember and learn from
Gary’s steadfast work attitude - his industry relationships hadextremely high priority. Gary is an example in business and in lifethat trust and integrity are of the most important attributes we canhave,” writes Sam Miller, former co-worker at SpectraSensors.
“Gary had an opinion on all most everything. You knew in veryclearly what his opinion was. You could agree or disagree, but Garywas cared! Because he cared he was really good at his craft,” writesTim Scott of PE Systems. “He was an avid salt water tropical fishenthusiast, and was one of the first to successfully grow coral speciesfor reintroduction into the wild. Gary was doing things for theenvironmental a hobby and in his profession before it becamepopular.”
“I had the distinct honor to work side-by-side with Gary duringthe time he was not with John Stammen,” wrote Dag Hammarskjoldin the guest book at www.legacy.com.
“Gary and I designed an analyzer sample system different thananything either of us had done before. When the system wasdelivered, Gary and I admired our work and gave each other a “highfive”. Around quitting time of that day Gary came into my office witha twinkle in his eye. He said “Janet will understand if I am latetonight”. I knew what he meant; our design looked good on paper, butwould it work? We went to the production floor and attachedtemporary power and air to the system. To our pleasure it worked asdesigned. Gary was not surprised but to be honest I was. The lessonhere is that Gary Bell believed in his abilities and after that day sodid I. God needed the best analyzer engineer in heaven and He tookGary.”
A memorial service was held on Saturday, April 24, 2010, atDiamond & Shannon Mortuary, 10630 Chapman Ave, Garden Grove,CA 92840. The family had requested donations to the AmericanCancer Society in lieu of flowers.
